Mirt the Moneylender served as a successful mercenary general and adventurer before settling down in Waterdeep and opening a money-lending business. Players can lend money from him by paying an amount of experience points equal the the amount of gold borrowed. If and when you return the money, 90% of the experience points are returned.

I was considering the idea of giving back all of the exp if
110% of the gold was paid back. However, the current
implementation was what I originally thought up, and I
don't have time to tweak with the script right now.
As for the XP taken, this is mainly for lower-level
characters (higher level characters rarely need gold), and
I figured that at lower levels, exp and gold are probably
roughly interchangable, which is why I kept the 1:1 ratio.
If you think there is a better way to do this, please post
your thoughts in the thread. I want to provide the best
possible "product"...

Interesting idea, using XP as collateral. But it doesn't
seem like enough when a higher-level player does it. I
mean, what's 1000XP to a lvl 20? Although I suppose 1000G
isn't taht much to a lvl 20 either.
Anyway, what about doubling the XP, but returning it all if
they pay the gold back with interest?
yeah, ok, I could change it myself. I'm just wondering what
others think of the idea.
