Description
Killer Town Crier v1.0 by Axe
===============================
This is a pre-scripted plop n play NPC that you can add to your module to have a town crier dispensing the news. Out of the box the news headlines and frequency the NPC shouts them can be controlled by DMs through a conversation with the NPC. PCs can optionally be designated as "newsworthy" to give them access to the extra options presented to DMs. This designation can be accomplished by giving the PC a newpaper to read.
Included are a town crier NPC blueprint, town crier conversation, newspaper item blueprint, scripts for the NPC's events, newspaper and conversation, and a general purpose library with a couple of functions which can be used to alter a town crier's behavior from any script on-the-fly during play.
Requirements:
===================
NWN1 v1.69 or later
Concepts:
==============
Plop down a town crier NPC and he will randomly choose one of the headlines he knows and shout it every 7 rounds (by default). Initially he knows no headlines but a DM or newsworthy PC can engage him in conversation to pass new headlines to him or cause him to cease announcing a certain headline. He can also be configured to adjust the frequency at which he shouts. And any player or DM can ask him to reveal all the news headlines he knows at once. Players can become newsworthy by reading a Paper of Newsworthiness item also included in the package.
UPDATE Introduced a persistent version you can swap in and out with the non-persistent one. See the additional notes appended to the readme file if you are interested in the persistent one.
The persistent version has been added to the regular download file -- so if you get that, you get them both. The persistent only download just includes the persistent version and updated readme file for those that already got the non-persistent one. No changes were made to the original non-persistent erf.
Includes the town crier NPC blueprint, newspaper blueprint, town crier conversation, and all scripts for the system in an easily importable tiny little erf.
Importing the erf gives you a plop-n-play pre-scripted fully customizable dynamic town crier NPC for delivering that vital and changing news to players in your module, or allowing your players to spread information and rumors thru the town crier NPCs placed throughout your world.
This download now includes a persistent version as well in a separate erf so that your town criers can remember their news and behavior settings across module restarts. The two erfs are completely swappable so you can switch between persistent and non-persistent town criers simply by importing the desired erf over the top of what you already have installed, rebuild, and go -- no code changes or object property edits required on the builder's end at all.
Includes everything the other download has except the non-persistent version of the erf.
Get this if you already downloaded the other one before the persistent version was introduced. The readme file included in both downloads was also updated from the original to include instructions concerning the persistent version.

Just to clarify Worm's last comment. The default persistent version linked above has the drawback that all criers share the same database and therefore all spout the same news no matter where they are. The changes detailed in post he linked to eliminate this limitation by having all criers store their news items in different databases which are based off the crier's TAG. So you can TAG your criers differently to have independent news for each of them or TAG them the same if you want them to share news and spout the same news items.
The default non-persistent version linked to above does not suffer this limitation. All criers regardless of their TAG will maintain a separate set of news items. They cannot share news however...if you want two of them saying the same things you have to give each of them the same news items. In the non-persistent version all news items are lost when the server resets so you must go around and re-seed them with news after every reset. Because of this, the non-persistent version is
better suited for use as a way your players can leave messages for each other rather than for giving people directions about the module.

Great stuff. I have yet to download anything made by Axe that I didn't like and end up using somehow. May he never desert NWN1! _________________________ Realms Of Destiny PW

Pretty cool. I also want to say thanks to Pattycake whose original question prompted the creation of this town crier script.

These are the sorts of things that can help a busy module builder to quickly bring a town alive. You always do a great job on these 'killer' packages.
Thanks, Axe Murderer!
