Castle Durgalbane is a large, well-founded and well-run server that has existed in different forms since March 2003. The server is based on the premise of roleplaying, and we provide a great environment in which to do so. DM's occasionally help with plots, but the server is based on a very player-driven foundation. The regular players on Castle Durgalbane are very helpful to newcomers to the Local Vault environment, and are advanced roleplayers. The world is currently based in a small settlement in the Jungles of Chult, which players, new and old, can help shape.

Good:
An amazing amount of placeable detail. Good layout. Nice atmosphere. No inappropriate encounters. Some very good RPers.
Bad:
Borked item filter. No encounters at all. (And few NPC's to add flavor.) Numerous munchkin characters. Some very bad RPers. Skill-based characters are hosed. Some people who probably shouldn't have DM access.
In a nutshell:
Either build something custom that fits within their idea of "right" or play a low level non-skill-based character and just go for the RP.

I suspect some of the people responding here are from my server, Wahtod.
If so, I apologize. It's not easy to run a server, and everyone has their own idea of how to do things properly; that's why it's good for players to have a choice.

Shows how much you've seen. DMs will -not- tolorate that, and will boot as neccesary. Sorry if our lives make it so that we can't get on 24/7 to server you hand-and-foot, but that's the way life is. If you give us a chance, you will see what Castle Durgalbane is, a great and well-managed place to role play. Of course you have your appinion, but you should get the full picture before you judge something. Don't say you do, because it is only a cloud of mist, obscuring your vision.

Before I go into too much detail here... I should probably say who I am. I'm the server administrator for Durgalbane. One of the server veterans decided to take it upon himself to write this little thing, so...yeah. But anyway.
I'll try to answer everyone's points in order here and to the best of my ability.
Fluffy- Over the summer, yes, the server was, unfortunately, like that. I have since fired a few choice DM's, and with the inclusion of a HAK pack and getting the DM's to be a hell of a lot more strict on these non-RP'ers that keep coming in, we have eliminated the aforementioned people from the server that, sadly, could not RP to save their lives. The server has since changed to an FR location- Western Chult.
Fish-Torn- Thanks. I tried to make it as well as I possibly could. On your second point, I have gotten on people's cases as to these golem and mini-half-dragon fads as of late. I won't go into detail here about that. Suffice to say, it takes a few days for a fad to die out, and most servers on LV that you go to will experience much the same thing from time to time.
Flann- I am aware of some rather harsh slander the server has been recieving lately, from a few other servers, for something that's claimed as 'compeitition,' which I do not endorse. I fully believe that there is a server for everyone out there, and quite frankly, if it isn't mine, then I can help you find one that's gooo enough. As for the NW Connections, I had a few DM's that were trained at one point, but I eventually fired them for acting high 'n mighty. I have yet to update that journal entry, as I have had a lot going on with college. I train the DM's personally now. Finally, and unfortunately, I must agree with you on the vanity statement. There is reason for this, however; many of the characters there have been around since the very beginning of NeverWinter; as such, they have had many experiences, and have worked to achieve their so-called vanity. Their players feel that their respective characters are worth more, since they have commited a much larger amount of time to character developement. Though I myself have been guilty of such a thing, I recently killed my character that was guilty of it. With any luck, I can start a new 'commoner' fad (and that would be a good fad to start, I think). Thanks again. As I said, I did spend quite a few hours making it. As for the HAK, most people have DSL or Cable by now, so I believe that a larger HAK could be warrented. Besides, it keeps the action and social people away- that's reason enough to have a large HAK.

Avoid, avoid, avoid.

I think the point these folks are making is that they -have- seen it themselves, which is the basis for their statements.
I would tend to agree, as well, having spent some time recently on Durgal. The signs go on and on about how their DMs were "trained" by NWNConnections and have tabletop experience (Meaning, they did an IRC conference for 1 hour.), yet all I saw were, as the prior poster put it so well, "Vanity" characters, acting just like people on a social server.
YMMV, it's a pretty server, anyway. 100 megs for a hak is a bit steep, though.

I play there, and I must ask.. Where do you two play at that is High and mighty?
I'm the only dragon, and I atempt to play the character by the book.
As for the Drow, Demons, Half gods and etc... Well that's always been a persistant problem. We don't attract 'normal' players it seems. Heh.
Well, Let me say that these people do not represent the Durgalbane community, nor do I. you must see it for yourself...

I totally agree. The place is visually pretty, but the quality of RP is lack lustre and it's just one great clique for fad characters to worship the non-existant DM's...

Too bad it's full of vanity characters, and DMs who'd rather be worshipped than enforce any sort of consistency or sanity.
Last time I was there it was full of dragons sitting around LOLing, people with wings, tails, horns, half-gods, Drow, etc.
It was more like Sigil than any FR location.
