Our goal at ALFA is to build the world of Faerûn using the Neverwinter Nights game engines (NWN1 & NWN2) and to provide the best online role-playing experience available anywhere on the net. We have a variety of servers, 1 NWN2 and 3 NWN1 - and are currently working on more! Each covers a specific region of Faerûn and is painstakingly designed by a team of experienced builders, and are constantly updated with current content and scripts to make your experience in ALFA as close to being in Faerûn as possible..
There is no cost to join or to play in A Land Far Away, but you must meet certain standards to obtain membership. This ensures the quality of role-play that our reputation is predicated upon and that our players expect of our game world. If first rate role-play and full immersion are what you are seeking, or if you desire to contribute behind the scenes of our game world, then you are welcome to apply and begin your journey to an unforgettable role-playing experience in A Land Far Away.

Hmm. I remember the first day I had on ALFA.
I got to play with up to 4 other people.
The roleplaying aspect of things was fun, many a joke was made and tons of entertainment to be found.
Sadly a DM with a ridiculous name didn't like the way things were going, he specifically targeted me with scolding oddly. Apparently roleplaying is not allowed if a DM doesn't want you roleplaying at the time, you can only roleplay when the DM wants you too. Wierd. In a group of 5 level 1 characters, he also spawned 40 orcish champions outside town, but this was after he offerred to let me experience what soloing was like. 20 Troglodyte cavemen, oddly in the middle of a forest? A place near Icewinddale to boot WTF? And to make things worse he spawned a hostile elf, but possessed him, made the elf apparently talk about how he and his animal companion would guide everyone safely to town. Then he lets the level 15 elf NPC kill as all for kicks. Then this DM calls me a bitch? You cant call someone a B*TCH just cause you don't like their account name. Go figure. Then he bans me for fun. Then I find out not so loong later the people I was with got banned for trying to defend me. Whoopy-dee-doo-da-day. I can also remember that characters apparently are not allowed to run, I was even scolded for running from the troglodytes from what I remember. Oh, and you can only rest once every 8 hours, and that is in realtime, meaning I'd need to wait 8 real life hours. Plus there was a severe bug in several conversations on the application server which caused NPCs to constantly do the same service for you oer and over, taking more and more gold from you. And you cant exit the conversation apparently. And oddly if you do manage to exit a glitched out buggy conversation so you dont lose 200 gold on constantly getting cure minor wounds cast on you, prepare from some scolding by the DM. Also apparently there is next to no realism, no roleplay, no nothing. I'm astonished that ALFA lasted more than a day. This gameworld is a miracle, because it is more likely the planet will spontaneously explode into a pile of radioactive dung than for this place to survive for one hour without being shut down, which apparently we should be waiting for the apocolypse to happen any second. _________________________ @===============================================@
Vinchenzo made a post here.
Plz check out my entries. I'm currently making a few simple modules, designing 3 special characters, and hope to someday be good this stuff.
This is Vinchenzo, finishing his post with the following advice:
Don't use Latin improperly (Lupis means grey, Rufus is red, Canid is dog, so on.) Furries annoy me with their improper usage of such. And I'm a furry!!! Ugh...
Don't vote for Beta things unless told they are finished, unless posted specifically by the author.
Don't abuse the vote and post function, don't vote for your own/friends stuff just to get a high vote. Don't flame vote either just to be an ass.
There is a voting system for how the points are used, even I forget, but we should follow it (and tattoo it to our forehead, lol)

I logged on briefly, seeing as -every- server was empty. However, after sometime a DM logged on and proceeded to lecture me about running around.. and how it was bad RP. I can understand, but when the server is EMPTY I am not going to bother walking, but maybe that is just me.
Oh and the best part is, he just continued to lecture me.. never attempted to engage in actual RP.
I wouldn't boast about having 1000+ players when the servers are generally barren.

This is what role playing is about. You get treated fairly on this server.
This place has multiple servers for varied play. You won't get bored here.
Try it. You'll like it.

Played on the application server for about 2 hours with no-one on, little to do in such huge areas - except maybe kill defenseless creatures (not my bag) - except collect berries for 1 gold each. Ran around as there was little to do - then a DM came on and started iteracting with me.
I return to an previously empty crypt - to find a few zombies - OK I can handle these just. Then starts throwing more at me, still OK, then more - so I retreat, having used up what little you get starting here.
On getting out I find the exit locked, and then he lets me out to find a whole load no outside - REALLY GREAT DMing - NOT !!!
So I die - wait around for some explanation - get it - told that I was running around the place - when I shouldnt - HUH - WTF - the place is huge - little to do between places and i get punished for runnning around on an empty server - get realistic ! - and then get told I have to start another character. PARDON ?!?!?! - you just killed me for what ??? running.
Its DMing like that PeeDee, that is not going to want anyone to play on your server. You have to give starting players a bit of slack - especially when they are the only ones on the damned place.
YOU WHERE WRONG !!!! - As a DM on and a supporting Builder of other worlds, and player I wanted to have a bit of fun.
YOU WONT GET IT HERE !

I've been playing on ALFA for 3.5 years now. We have a great community from builders to dms to players. I've had dozens of highly memorable experiences and seen many beautifully built servers.
I can't be bothered with anything these days, but such is life. I don't care. So it goes. More or less nothing seems worth thinking about. I've just been hanging out waiting for something to happen, but that's how it is.

My home PW. Perfect as an online, 1000+ people, gaming community can be.
The application process is certainly not perfect. Having gone through it myself last year, I can say it's a frustrating experience. Part of the problem in my view is that email has become a horribly unreliable communication medium, particularly when using free mail hosts like yahoo, hotmail, and others. The spam guards and junk mail filters these days have virtually ensured that. So if you do apply, make sure you keep an eye out for email residing in bulk, junk, and whatever other "bad mail" folders offered by your specific provider. I strongly recommend that you post on the forums if you don't hear back within a 48 hour period. The community is truly receptive to new players and we're always willing to assist you when we can.
The other part of the application process that can be daunting to many is the prospects of rejection. Nobody likes it. To some with high self regard for their own RP abilities, it can even feel down right insulting. To all of you I say take this all with a grain of salt. It's an imperfect system at best. Most folks at ALFA are genuinely good people and no insult or personal judgement is intended.
The object of application review is to try and preserve the quality of play on ALFA servers and undoubtedly, many quality individuals get overlooked unintentionally as a result. Many current members of the community are themselves multiple applicants, so there's no shame in that if that's a worry for you. It's truly not personal and if you find your feelings hurt or ego somewhat bruised by a rejection notice, I'll apologize in advance on behalf of the community. But if you honestly believe yourself to be a role player at heart, then I urge you not to give up or at least reach out for a little help on our boards. I'd also recommend setting up a time to RP with a DM on our application server - that's what they are there for. As with everything in life, persistence will pay off. It's players like you that we want, after all.
If you're a builder, scripter, or artist seeking work, post your interest on our forums or contact our Lead Admin.
I won't vote currently, but I've submitted applications since before NWN was released, about five to date.
I recieved no response to them, although I noted my experience with the PnP settings, that I was a member of the RPGA and an approved DM by them, had run LivingCity campaigns under the RPGA's watchful eye at conventions for over 5 years.
The lack of response at five applications (for mere player status, no less) leaves one with a sour taste in the mouth, especially when I submitted links to webpages supporting the above in those apps.
The most recent of these was about 4 months ago.
I suggest the PR minion get on top of the submissions line and work it over heavily and find out why they are not even responding to emails. Fastest way to lose players is to ignore them, I've been a PW Admin of a large server for almost three years, and this is certainly a basic truth in ANY venture. _________________________ Lan's Placeable Groups v1.5

Like any other PW project out there; therell be your ups and downs this community isnt perfect, but haven being a member of this community for the past 3 going on 4 years, I have to say everything Ive experienced as a member so far has been just great. The roleplay, like any other community promoting serious, mature roleplay, is top-notch the stories Ive been through have been well done due to our creative, very talented DMs.
We could really do better if people out there would switch off their negative thoughts about us and explore us further see what were about. Theres plenty this community has to offer to any applicant.
I think one of our major flaws is communication between the public and us sometimes things may not come out so clear and things are turned on us due to either first hand experiences or second hand opinions. My advice to those whove gathered their opinions seconded handedly is to come check us out for yourselves and see if ALFA is for you. If it isnt, well then theres always the option of leaving and taking your complaints with you ;)

Hey there. Im a ADM for ALFA and have been a player for a long time. Id like to make a few comments on our PW project.
First, ALFA is all about hardcore roleplaying. I think some people think when they join us that our servers are all like EQ or WoW and thats not the case. We are set up so you can travel all over the realms, but a player cant just go around killing everything in sight. Its much like the real world. You actions have consequences. We dont encourage people to solo. We want folks to group up and travel that way.
I am one of those that agree we need more players in ALFA. Some like it like it is. Some Dms like it like it is. Less hassle to Dm when a lot of players arent on, etc. We have folks from all over the world playing in ALFA and it seems a lot of times those players stick to servers that are more suited for their timezones. We also have a high number of folks who play in mostly campaign oriented adventures. ALFA is 24/7 but the players cant always be on. We wont ever just open up the doors to let anyone in we only want the best roleplayers so we will continually be picky about who joins us.
We strive to make our world as close to PnP as possible. We want to make that experience you had sitting at home playing PnP with friends what you will find with us at ALFA. If your into this type of play you will love the PW. If you dont and consider yourself more action oriented then you will not enjoy yourself.
We have a lot of servers. Lots to do and see. We would love new players to come check us out. Hopefully, those that do will be of the same mind.
Thanks!

Are these servers worth tha hassle to get into them? NO! Don't bother. There isn't anyone to group with anyways.

Ive never played on alpa but have been looking at its websight from time to time since befor NWN was even available in stores. What Ive heard from many people Ive talked to is quite consistant. Its really harsh, and the DM's if you run into any are even worse. Now, I for one kind of get tired of the level one PC who cant step out of town without being attacked by a monster 10 times harder than you who is guaranteed to cause a permadeath to you on its first strike at you. From what everyone has told me, this is what i can expect here. Hmm..
Now for the RP. First, when ever I look at the Alpa servers on Gamespy, most of the time they are either empty or have at most 2 or 3 people on them. Hmm, what kind of RP can you have if you have no one to RP with. Now, if no one is on a server? how do you RP with them, and if you cant solo anything and your only level 1? why play the server. Add on top of that that from what Ive been able to find out, if you happen to be online and you make some "rp" blunder in front of a dm, even though you are the only person on the server, its the ole 'Ban'ola .
Now seems to me, If I were going to make a big multiserver PW (ie if I were going to spend the hundreds or thousands of hours creating the thing) that I would want as many people as possible to enjoy the server(s). The whole idea of online games is to be able to interact (atleast in part) with other people, but from what I can tell, this isnt the case with Alpa. Maybe it they made the server a little more freindly more people would actually play on their servers instead of having them be just one more red (passworded) server with no one playing on them.

A lot of work has gone into ALFA, but it's just not really any fun. The concept is that there are things set in place to reward you for roleplaying, because you wont get any xp at all for fighting. which is good in the sense it discourages powergaming, but bad in the sense to where you could lose a huge amount of xp by fighting something that would only give you 3 xp if you defeated it. however, in 3 weeks of playing on 3 different alfa servers, i didnt get any kind of reward for roleplaying even once. Sorry but it gets a little dull playing the same PC for 3 weeks and having like 118 XP. the mods are well built and all, but it still gets old really quick, because your character never really develops or gets anywhere.

Roleplay = 8 IC conversations believable
Gamesize = 10 Huge, REALLY huge.
XP = 3 do not expect to see skills improve unless you can play for 6 hours a day. If, however you want to play the same PC for years then this may be for you. (bear in mind if you die, you stay dead unless you can get a cleric to ressurrect you)
Challenges = 8 Just about everything is lethal, which I kinda like.
Quests (DM)= 5 good but only available at particular times. Do have a number of static quest though.
other factors. I am very put off by the insistance on walking. Is realistic yes. But VERY BORING. Is not a simulator it is entertainment. -4

Personal experience {I hope this can be read as how the servers can appear to new players who have not already "found their feet".
Website server status - some out-of-date IP addresses and those in text format and not numerical format cannot be translated by gamespy. The forums are an alternative (some list IP, some do not), or webchat, which is quite frankly not much help.
I have yet to get online to a game without technical problems. Having said this I have not been able to try too many with the IP address issues mentioned above.
Those servers I have played are pretty difficult to bump into other players to roleplay (mayeb a timezone issue). For my part I wandered around big empty spaces aware others were online but unable to do anyhting about it.
Overall my personal experience has been one of frustration and lonely wandering. To an outsider it the game has an air of a clique to it. I will try to exlain what I mean.
I have played RP games for 20 years. I have tried to get other involved who had never played. Their main reason for resistance they said was that the everyone new the rules, assumptions were taken about how much help a new player needed, and they felt left out. What they where saying is that the RP community was poor at being inclusive.
The experience of trying to "get into" an ALFA game left me with that impression. I am sure this is not the desire as I have been on the forums and the players are open and helpful...I do think that their are some problems with translating that into the game servers.
This is not intended as a flame, nor a criticism of the effort put in by the team at ALFA. As has been mentioned by other posts, there are MANY servers under the ALFA banner.

Plots, quests, faces, events, action, battles, foes, allies, realism, fun, fear, laughter, happiness, sorrow, anger....all felt, role played fantastically, DMed superbly.
