A persistent world set in a fantasy version of the 12th century Crusades. This is a highly detailed 'alternate earth' recreation of that time, starting in Southern France and encompassing the Balkans, Scandinavia, Palestine, Egypt, Africa and Crete. Mature, fun, co-operative role-playing is our style. We're a very friendly group, and everyone is welcome to join.

I'm pleased to report that Hidden Tradition is back! The new version of this world is now running under PW Story on Gamespy - and hakpaks are no longer needed. So please log in and join us once more!
A well deserved addition to the Hall of Fame. Well Done!

HT is a well maintained, challenging, aesthetically impressive and clever module full of thick plotedness and well developed characters.
A must for anyone into Mythology or true role playing.

Nice world based on true stories/tales and continuously being extended by the Hidden Tradition folks.
Small but friendly community, willing to help or give advice.
Hidden Tradition is one the best NWN server for role-playing. Sometimes it's hard, but so is life.

Normally I wouldn't vote for this since I'm one of the builders but since we've had a few clearly fraudulent low votes registered to push us down the charts I think it's only fair that I attempt to redress the balance a little. Also the world has a great build team, and I really want show my appreciation for their efforts - this world has expanded to become one of the truly great PWs, and even after playing here on a daily basis for over two years it still excites me every time I log on.

Truly one of the best built and most enjoyable worlds I have played on in my 2+yrs playing NWN online. The setting is amazing, and the team's use of tilesets, haks, etc. are judiciously chosen so as to fully enhance the atmosphere of the mod. The mod is also very well balanced, and quite challenging. So if you are a power gamer looking for the next mod to try to tear up, this is probably not the place for you.
In my personal involvement as a DM and/or Server Op for 3 different PW Action mods, I used to power game as well. I couldnt wait to get as uber as possible, as quickly as possible. However, HT has completely changed my style of play altogether, as there is no such thing as power leveling here. Players are challenged to take more time in their character creation, and to be as creative as they wish as almost any build is viable in the HT world. One must simply learn to play a bit more judiciously, rather than to simply create the uber tank or mage.
For those with complaints about balance or lack of gear, the HT team has been more than willing to listen to player input, as long as they feel it adds value to the world they have presented. In short, the last I heard, Rodney and his team were not being paid to for their time and efforts, and are sharing with the rest of us a truly entertaining world; so if you have gripes or other complaints about the mod, then maybe it is not for you and it is time for you to move on.
However, if you are looking for a world with that is a welcome break from the standard Faeran fare, with its unique storyline exhaustively researched by Rodney and his team, reproducing as closely as possible the world of the 12th century Crusader times, look no further. The community is small, but very loyal and most welcoming. You will find most players are more than happy to answer questions or help out, short of ruining the mod for other players by spoon-feeding them.
So explore and enjoy, and hope to see a few of you around!

Fight the Inquisition, participate in a Gnostic Mass, speak to Osiris in the afterlife, and adventure with really cool people. Hidden Traditions is a wonderful gaming experience, and I'd recommend it above any other Persistant World that I've tried.

This world is oppressive in the Orwellian sense. Decent module, horrible DMing. A player can find himself repremanded for violating rules which are neither intuitive (golden rule-type stuff) nor advertised/posted. The creator is extremely hostile to to anyone who doesn't enjoy HIS style of play, and throws rather rediculous temper tatrums. I can empathize with some control-freak tendencies, since the guy has obviously spent a lot of time on the mod, but he takes anal-retentive, passive-aggressive behavior to a whole new level. Not the type to discuss problems in an adult manner, and completely closeminded.

I've been a builder for several months now, and became an active DM a couple of months ago, and I've been working hard to make HT a better game than it was before. Rodney provides an overall vision, but gives me and the other members of the build team a pretty long leash when it comes to adding things in.
Recently, we re-arranged the geography a bit and added in the town of Nidaros in Norway. There's a good high-level section that branches off from it and it provides a good challenge for 15th level or higher characters, including epics. We have several players who have reached the 20+ levels and so we're developing a slew of new content to cater to extreme adventuring.
I've been working hard to add in content that adds to the historical flavor of the game world, especially in the new areas of Scandinavia. If you haven't been around HT in a while, check it out!

I was shown HT by a friend when she became part of the build team. It is a great world, and constantly developing by bringing in players and helping them become involved in building the world as well.

Feydras comments below got me thinking and I've now reworked the death system considerably. Now on death you are taken to the next world for judgement, from which you can eventually return to Earth - complete with reasons why you can be reborn.
So now you still respawn, but at least it's not completely arbitrary, and has a certain "realism" about it.

Thanks for the kind words Feydras. I have seriously thought about using permadeath, but most players really don't like it, so...
I guess you could just not respawn when you die, but that's hardly the same :-)
The world is pretty tough as well, dying happens quite a bit. Ive been thinking of putting in a backstory that explains why PCs can respawn, because having something unrealistic happen without explanation annoys me. I'll have a think about it.
My bad. This world isn't listed as HCR. Sorry for the misunderstanding, the site states quite clearly it is respawn.
I still think it would be far more interesting with permadeath though.
Best of luck with you Rodney. I will stop clogging this site with posts.

Thanks. I eventually figured it out. I've logged onto the server a couple of times and am curious why it is listed as HCR. Is it just because of the limited rest areas? Nothing else that i see seems to be HCR.
I really love all the atmosphere, background and immersion you've put into the module. I also love the fact that you are using the PRC. Beautiful job, it is quite obvious you've put in an enormous amount of work into this thing. The world shines and seems alive and real to me with only one enormous, glaring exception...
I just can't believe in a world where PCs respawn when they die. I find that impossible to roleplay. You've put all this work into building a believable fantasy world and IMO it is wrecked by this. I found this very disappointing. To each his own i guess. I do wish you the best of luck with the server Rodney.

+ If you're not playing permadeath you may be playing NWN, but you're definitely not playing D&D.

If you are using Mac or Linux, you may need to change the capitalisation of the hakpak name to get it recognised - I think it might need to be all lower case.
If you are using Windows, try using the auto installer application.

Update...
i followed the instructions within the desdesc and drylandsht haks and got them working. I still cannot get the shields to install so the server recognizes it. Please help with suggestions...

I'd love to play. The world looks fantastic. Unfortunately, when i downloaded and installed all the haks from the webpage linked it told me i was still missing three of the haks...
missing.. shields
drylands ht
desdesc
I found them and began downloading them again, so far shields is reinstalled and still the server (Hidden Tradition 4, the IP listed below the Hak downloads) won't take it.
Any suggestions? This is frustrating. I have the PRC installed, but did so directly from their website as i had it installed prior to discovering this world. Could this be causing the problem?

I don't know the particulars of your grievance, kaedynn, but the age of HT alone should at least make you think twice before giving it such a negative rating. If the server were as bad as you voted it, it would have imploded over a year ago. I have evaluated plenty of other servers, and I know with absolute certainty that the level of quality provided by Rodney and Team HT is uncompromisingly top notch. If you don't like it, that's your right. But playing on HT for "over a month" probably means that you think more of the mod than you are willing to admit.

I've found Hidden Tradition to be a great community because it has room for improvement. In less than a year, I've gone from total newbie to become a designer and DM. I earned this priveledge by contributing to the world and taking part in the process of helping it grow. On more than one occasion there's been fricton with other players or DMs, but being an adult, we worked through them and came to consensus on issues or simply agreed to disagree. HT is an ongoing work in progress, and will most likely never be 'finished' simply because there is so much more that can be added. Cooperating with people across the globe has been an exciting (though often frustrating) experience as we pool together diverse talents to help develop our own version of 12th century Earth.

There are currently 156 people in the Hidden Tradition Guild who have made 1742 posts in the Guild forum. That's a lot of posts, from a lot of people.
Several of these 1742 posts are by the person below who is claiming I delete all posts that disagree with me. He came to our forums, asked for a bunch of changes to the world to suit his character, and by and large, actually got those changes. Then when we eventually refused to add something else he wanted, he started getting angry and abusive.
I will freely admit that I did delete ONE post by this person from our forums. That post contained personal abuse of other Guild members, which I do not allow on the Guild forums. In retaliation for that, this person then decided to publicise to all and sundry what a nasty person I am, and also to give our world a vote of 1 as a spoiler, taking us out of the Top Rated Worlds chart for the first time in our entire history.
So it goes.
We're still a kick-+blocked+ world to adventure in though.

Read the post you twits, its more then just monks, I know about the problems with multi classing a onk because i did it, you guys just played a straight monk which is fine on HT.
However would you like to take a stab at defending the balance of say a rogue. Keen removed off all rapiers the day after Rodney was unable to cast keen on his. the reason was its unrealistic. un no its not unrealistic it has to do with what the weapon is supose to do and the game engine itself. Does he get into explaining no he locks the thread.
My low score is about the world in total. DMs, the creater and his deleting and locking of threads that disagree in anyway with what he feels is right, rodneys inability to openly listen to his players and actually discuss stuff.
Quests that have you doing stuff for both sides makes the story line a waste.
You want to reply and call me names hey that just shows the maturity of the server.
You say the world is balanced then why do you put up a thread in the HT forums and ask the players about it, see how fast it gets deleted or locked. I know there are a few players that feel other classes need some balancing equipment wise. And yes its mostly all my opion, but not just my opinion.
I must agree with Ogami_Itto here, total munchkin. I have also played a monk on this world for a long time and he is one of the most powerful characters in the world, without any massive boosts in armor or items. While Kaedynn is entitled to his opinions just like everyone else, I will say that to vote low here because someone did not want to change his world just because you whined about some things is rather immature. So is misleading everyone here that you were reasonable in your requests, when the truth is so far from that. You have also complained about the lack of high-powered magic items (+4 and up)--this world has been running for a couple of years without these items and there have been no real probelms outside of a bit of a challenge. This is very reasonable with the history and background of this server, however, as life in the Middle Ages was certainly no cake-walk for anyone, even the knights and other warriors.
As to your comments on players switching alignments frequently, I have this to say: if they want to then that is there decision and does not in any way reflect on the quality of the world itself, or on Rodney. There are a large number of players that take their role-playing very seriously and stick to one alignment or have very good reasons to switch that alignment. Of course there while always be those (no matter how well done a world is) that will be playing just to kill things, get levels as quickly as they can, and get as much uber-gear in the process (sound familiar?). I always felt those type of people were compensating for a lack of something in their real lives.Vae Victus!
Posted by Ogami_Itto at 2004-07-08 15:08:00 Voted 9.00
I don't see any reason to waste time refuting one irate munchkin who couldn't find uber-enough monk gear to satisfy his power needs and has apparently never been exposed to punctuation and grammar, so I'll just say that I like this world and the players here quite a bit and have always felt welcome in the Lands. If you have any interest in history around the Middle Ages, you'll find lots to love here. Oh, and my first character here was a monk, made many months ago before any of the new items, classes, and feats gave MANY more powerful options in character growth, and he's never had a problem with fights. I guess poor players will gripe about absolutely anything, though...

Kaedynn, yes you are entitled to your opinin. But unbalenced world..? I suppose in real life you walk to the store and find everything you want. There are many different weapons in this world. I can tell you by experience that i have found all the weapons and armor you desired...no i didnt buy them in a store, Instead i spent time and effort to complete quests and find those boss chests. It isnt easy and it should not be, if you want something for nothing yeah this isnt the place for you..
