What is this server really about?
I would say "fun"! And this is provided by a splendid blend between roleplay, immersive quests and an environment that is thick with tolkien lore and beautifully build. Most importantly, there is still constantly put a lot of work into this world. Thus new quests, areas and NPCs ensure that there is always something new to explore.

Some 3 or 4 years ago I bought Neverwinter Nights because of this server... I played there for a long while and then spent some time away from games for another couple of years... When I went back, obviously disappointed with NWN2 graphics and mechanics and the lack of RP in other online games, I was thrilled to find this server still running and very active, with many changes...

As a heavy/immersive roleplayer who also loves the action and adventure, it was the first and only time I saw those mixed to a perfection... While other heavy RP servers are a major bore where the only thing to do is talking in a tavern with marie-sue PCs, and action based servers are just like facebook games (time spending and without purpose), I molded my idea of an ideal server in this one.

I've always loved this server and community, and I for one will happily return to it, and I recommend any who love a good RP Persistent World lovingly crafted and inhabited to give it a go :)

It's been ages since I've updated/posted here, so here goes...

Untold Tales is still alive, and looking quite well. Over the last year, the gameworld has undergone a massive refresh/redesign project. Many new features have been added, including crafting, improved ai and multiquest campaigns. It is the longest standing Middle Earth NWN server - quite an achievement in these elder days of NWN. Our hope is to provide the players of NWN with THE Middle Earth Roleplay server and to keep it alive and well over NWN's twilight years.

To this end, we are moving towards a much stronger communal approach to management and development than we have in the past. To keep such an old game alive we must all put aisde our differences and work together to protect and grow the game we love.

Players, builders, DMs (experienced or novice) are welcome to join us.

Returning to the server after a couple of years either away or popping in very infrequently I can say that it is still going strong. You can look forward to:

1) A brilliantly realised representation of Middle Earth, with a multitude of beautiful areas and quests. The server is still constantly being updated. It is possible to solo, at least at lower levels, but that is not what the server is geared to (although changes in that direction are being made). Finding people to party with you is entirely feasible.

2) A community of dedicated and welcoming players, who display high levels of RP, and are always happy to help.

3) Friendly DMs and excellent DM events. I think all players no matter the game of server will at some point have a disagreement with a DM. It comes with the job, and is as true in pen and paper RPGs as in NWN. Personally the worse that has ever happened to me in UTT2 has been getting killed by an overenthusiastic DM who had misjudged my characters capacities (he was very sorry) or being tripped up when running at an inappropriate moment (less relevant now you can ride horses anyway). As for the best memories: Meeting Elrond on my first week on the server, countless wonderful adventures, friendly help and advice, and a bear widget for my Beorning's RP.

4)A commitment to allowing you to experience Middle Earth as closely to the books as possible. This accounts for all the rules and regulations, to make the server and characters Middle Earth compliant. I have always found that if I used this as it was meant, it only greatly enhanced my playing experience.

5) An excellent and friendly forum. Great for keeping up to date with events in Middle Earth, other players stories, and organising to play together. The server's mIRC channel is also good for the later.

I've rated the server 9.00, basically because I'd give it a 10.00, but since nothing is perfect, to do so would be dishonest.

If you want high quality roleplay in the world of Tolkien, either as a new or returning player, then UTT2 is for you, and still going strong! :)

The Wireplay Game Servers will be offline from the evening of Saturday 21st March. They should hopefully be back online sometime Sunday Morning.

This scheduled downtime is due to relocation. Upon relocation the servers will have a change in IP addresses. Please visit your community forums for details of new IP's which will be announced once known.

This server is gorgeous, and what I've seen truly gives the feel of Middle Earth.

I'm writing this for anybody who is on the fence about playing this...

I've been playing for a few weeks now and I am in love with this PW. First of all it's "easy on the eyes", the areas are clearly well thought out and bring life to Tolkien's works it gives me a very "Middle-Earthy" feel so to say.

There seems to be a core group of hard core players who seem to be genuinely attached to this PW. You might think that would make them sort of clickish, but it's quite the opposite. Due to my schedule I play fairly late at night while there are few other players on, but EVERY player and DM that has been online while I was on has welcomed me to their community and offered to answer any questions or give any help if I needed it.
The combat is fairly tough if you are by yourself, but the community seems to be just large enough that there is almost always at least 1 person online. The quests that I've played have all been somehow attached to the setting which is great, and you'll find yourself doing some work for such familiar characters as Samwise, Frodo, and (to my great delight) Strider himself. If you play an evil aligned character your starting location will be Dol Guldur and you will want to have another player with you for those starting quests which are mostly combat oriented compared to the Shire, or Breelands first few quests which you can get to level 1 or 2 on with very few combat instances.

It's clear that not just the dev. staff and DMs, but also every player in the community is somehow invested in UTT2 so if you are looking for a great place to play, with a great group of people, set in the greatest work of fantasy ever written this is for you.

The gameworld details have now been updated after being innacurate for some time. Thanks to all those who helped us track down the problem areas.

From the very start of 2009, there will be an intensive project underway to help broaden the appeal of the module to its intended audience. I am aware of some shortcoming in the module which need to be addressed. Golodh, you made a fair few points which I want to see looked at. I can't say much for the particular DM issues you faced, other than that they are no longer with us.

After a break from the running of the project im pleased to be back in the hot seat with some talented builders alongside me. We hope to make the module more appealing and fun to players by dealing with exisiting issues and looking to the future with possible new projects.

Simply the best Middle-Earth themed server out there! I've played quite a bunch now so I can really compare. Good and helpful players and some really great DMs are justa couple of things to note. Simply put: it's great! Every Middle-Earth fan or simply anyone who enjoys RP should try this server!

Well ... a number of things.

I had more or less returned to MERPUK six or seven months ago. My memories of the world were mixed: mostly positive memories of the players, mixed to negative memories of the DMs, positive memories of the landscaping.

Upon return most memories were reinforced. The players are generally nice to be with (a notable exception being a player who left his party kicking its heels for 20 minutes pleading "urgent" Wireplay admin business), and the landscaping still generally of high quality. The world-view (a low-magic, low-reward world of Middle) is unusually consistent. One can like it or not, but its thoroughness and consistency have my respect. My main gripe is that there are practically no quests that can be completed without a pitched battle, much as I would hope for quests that allow a stealthy or clever character to succeed as well as a strong one (or a strong party).

The DMs conduct and demeanour I still found less appealing too often to my liking (and at times intrusive, bossy, arrogant, and over-prescriptive). The tone of DM address varies enormously by DM of course, but I have had it vary from studiously polite to outright shouty in a matter of seconds or minutes as their suggestions were not taken up or their instructions were not followed quickly enough to their liking (DM Sauron, DM Morgoth, DM Araw). Sadly enough I have witnessed this to cause some players to schedule their online time when there were no DMs on.

Some DMs also seemed to think that the best way to make their presence known is through spawning lots of monsters and making parties use up their supplies of healing kits through endless grinding attacks. To be sure, I know several players who relish this break from inactivity and the chance to gain lots of XP points, but I am not among them. I tend to prefer avoiding grinding battles through stealth or tactics.

To be fair I have to say that several players seem to appreciate the standard of DMing.

Due to the setup of the world soloing is made very difficult (and tends to be regarded with disfavour by DMs even though it is often the only option due to the paucity of players). In addition there are few quests (especially group quests) that can be completed in less than 60-90 minutes (including meeting up, party formation, preparation, travel, combat, return) from a meeting in some inhabited part of the world.

No matter how intentional this setup, it is a barrier to the casual player, and the RP'er without lots of time to spend. To those players the limitations make themselves felt in an unpleasant way.

I can sympathise with those players who award this PW a note of 10 out of 10, but I really cannot subscribe to that. It seems too uncritical to me, given that there are blemishes, to give more than a well-deserved 8.5 out of 10.

Its great to see continued loyal support for the module four years on since the launch of UTT2. Even more pleasing, is to see the module being so well run by committed volunteers since I decided to take a step back from the running of the server to focus on other Untold Tales related projects. Thank you to all those who have supported the community over the may years. There are too many of you to name; but to those of you - thanks!

I hope UTT2, as it was intended, continues to be a source of fun and inspiration to Middle Earth enthusiasts, now and for the forseeable future. Time may very slowly tick away against the module, but as an assurance to all who enjoy the finest Middle Earth roleplay world ever created by a community: There will be a third Untold Tales of Tolkien and such a module does exist. The time of its arrival however, I honestly cannot say.

A final thank you to the admins of nwvault for dealing with the malicious hate campaign sparked by a certain individual. The comments being made were completely untrue and hugely unrepresentative of the community as a whole and the individuals throughts of the community quoted elsewhere. The community handled the matter without fighting fire with fire and is totally vindicated of all false allegations made by the individual and his multiple accounts.

Invino, is it your life goal simply to put the server down? Have your go at DM_Kev, fair enough, but don't put the entire server and community down. Maybe it's about time you got over your ban.

I do have ambiguous feelings about this server. I have had wonderful times here in the three years i used to play here. Wonderfull players and great DMs i have met - and also have seen to leave. Hence let me split my vote into certain areas and tae the average for my vote:
Arts: 10
The areas are awesome built, and just to explore can keep you happy for quite a long time.
Technical:9
The technical aspects seem to work as inended most of the time. Some workarounds are used and it is not really a persistant world, but considering that the scripting work has been done in the free time of some talented people, the result is far from ordinary.
Administration: 2
It may be a matter of style and personal preferences, but i strong heartedly disagree with the style of administration that is used at this server and frequently invokes flame wars between adminisration and sorely disappointed once passionate members of the community. In my personal view i have seen dishonest and unfair treatment instead of rising on the occasion.
Specials - 10
Special rules and extensions are in use that bring fun and dedication to those who bother to learn about them, all the while not hindering those who just want to start exploring the world.
Development 10
The world is changing constantly and slow. New content every once in a while is keeping up the excitement while staying constant enough to not discourage.
Quests 10
The quests in the gameworld are everything - from lovely to tension to action. You can easily do the quests again and again without getting bored.
World exploration 6
If you are not involved in one of the fixed quests you can still have a great time with sightseeing or DM events, but without that there is not very much to do. Players generally gather to do one of the quests or a DM event or sit and do some rp-chat, but almost never to do something else.
Community 10
The community might be small but filled with genious and and ardently people, generally nice and helpful.
Roleplay 10
This is a roleplay server and therefore you can experience some excepitional roleplaying skills here. Everyone had to start developing his or her rp-skills at some point and no one frowns on those beginners who have a great chance to learn a lot about roleplay at this server. I did learn a great amount here and am still learning something new every now and then.
Dungeon Masters - 9
Although the DM's changed over time, there has been hardly any change in the quality of the DM-work. There may have been times where DM's have been keeping themselves too busy doing the job of law enforcement or falling victim to frustration by arguings, but generally they are doing a great job to boost up the already enthralling atmosphere of this server.

from the many parts of the shire to Bree, and that's just the beginning

being new to role play i was pleased to meet some very helpful and friendly players and DM's who helped me get started on my adventures

I have been around for quite some time playing NWN online. I started on servers with the Middle Earth theme and seem to have never left it. Of all the servers I've had the pleasure to visit, this one blows them all out of the water. The visual aesthetics is phenomenal!! The Quests are creative and well thought out. Roll Play on this server is outstanding!!! Also the DM's are great to interact with. The DME's are a PnP'ers dream. There are some side effects to this server but like with all things you have to take the good with the bad. In this servers case it happens to be that I am in the USA and *most*, not all, of the server's residents and DM's are in Europe. But that does not mean that there is not a suffecent playerbase and DM support for my time zone. Over all, I give this server two thumbs up!!

Almost perfect! Too many hobbit characters running around killing orcs and such which a little bit breaks the illusion of the Middle-earth, but that is tolerable.

Well, .. sad thing if someone leaves, who seemed to have enjoyed himself alot on the server. Thats at least what rememeber from invinoveritas. But let me justify my vote, which is, plainly said, a vote for the community on the server. That are all those people acting and interacting to bring this virtual ME World to life. I am not going base the vote too much on visuals, scripting and other details that are more or less dependend on the game engine. Though doubtless for the NWN1 setting it seems to be very well done. Some areas really breathtaking, some quests really enriching your personal story in the ME setting. Finally everything is very much in line with Tolkiens works, and the DMs and players seem really dedicated in this matter. Even if one was not so much into Tolkiens world, he would learn quickly about it by playing on this server.

So finally all comes done to the dedication of the DMs and Players? Yes thats it, exactly! As a longtime Pen and Paper DM and Player, I was always very critical about any kind of online RP activities. I finally have to admit, that its not about the system/engine or medium you use for Roleplaying, its all about the people that bring it to life.
