If i would honestly explain why i vote 10 for the Untold Tales, it would take a lot of words of flattery and admiration. So i'll just say that im here to stay ;]

ModernMarvelMurderer: you appear to have your wires crossed mate. Modern Marvel was posting with characters to get a point across without his post being censored. Since you are both Defending MERP UK (good on ye both) no need to attack the lad.

Ive played on MERP for many months now and have had some creative involvement in its development. Ive tried other servers but i enjoy the maturity of the playerbase and the enthusiasm for the project at MERP. While nit-picking derogatory comments can be annoying and constructive comment often helpful, simple 'bashing' is bloody pointless and only proves that the basher is trying to grind some personal millstone. They in fact, have nothing worth saying, so they hurl abuse. I dont know who posted the comments that Kev has been replying to because they neglected to identify themselves, but in my opinion they need to grow up, and fast.

Merp UK is probably greatest module i've seen so far, though their rules becomes more hardcore everyday....whatsoever Merp is much more mature than any other Roleplay server

To MordernMarvel: I realized long ago that ppl using words like @$$ are the real geek since only those kind of ppl think its cool to make words with different character.... the thing is i didnt knew some geek were retarded(?isnt it the opposite?)

btw the character you create on a non-local server is saved on your local system when you create it.and only then

before you reply with the usual denial retorts like how you're not a geek, and you've got some bad @$$ girlfriend, and you're the original cult of personality, or some other moronic things, just dont waste your breath.

If you're gonna act like a bad @$$ and try to lie, at least get your facts straight before trying to embarrass the DM. God these nerds are such tools.....

God, I hate pimple faced little geeks like the one below DM Kev's comment who act like they're all awesome and stealthy and secret. I mean come on...it obvious by you bragging on such a dumb @$$ topic that you obviously have little to no life and you, without a doubt, are full of $#!T.

Just to blow your spot my friend, if you log onto a server and create a character, it creates a folder in server vault with your various character's information so you can log in and play that character so you dont have to make them same character over and over again, each time starting at level 1...the character you play on a non-local server is NOT held on your local system....

if you're going to try and act cool and that you're so damn special, at least get your facts straight....

Again, you are a fool.

1)You have no access to my files.

2)I assure you, my characters are much higher than level 2.
The fact that you would make that assertion tells me you don't really know.

4)You have not actually managed to "ban" anyone, do to certain game and server.. ahhh... "loopholes"

5)Let's just say that you cannot always "see" when I am there. Call it a gift from Bioware.

Posted by DM_Kev at 2005-01-17 03:34:00
Now you are cracking me up.

Untold Tales of Tolkien is NOT online! I should know, I made it!

We do have a seperate entry for UTT2. Your angry words obviously prove to me you are someone out for revenge, since i've just discovered the name you used for voting in our bans directory!

Also looking around, I discover you made NO input to the community whatsoever, not even bringing your concerns to our attention. None of your characters even exceeded level 2 according to your files, so you saw pretty much *od all.

There have been a few people posting negatives here, and only one person had valid comments which were helpful and we used. You are just another angry little boy who got all upset that we banned him and wants to get his own back by nay saying the community.

Now if you actually approached us properly, we may be able to explain some of your misinterpretations for you, because some of them are ridiculous, quite frankly.

Posted by none ( 67.117.xxx.xxx ) at 2005-01-16 17:43:00
Of course.. this is version 2.. .you would be correct if you were thinking of version 1.

I find references to non-internal Bioware development politics irrelevent... It's a game, not a state-department initiative.

Posted by DM_Kev at 2005-01-16 11:51:00
I find such a comment hilarious as this module is no longer online, so I cannot understand what it is you wish to achieve!

Untold Tales of Tolkien was taken offline in the first few days of December 2004. You have decided to post on the 14th January...

Whilst I see only one comment that makes sense with regards to Untold Tales, I see little more here than political sniping from either a patron of another community, or a player we booted out for cheating or something similar.

If you wish to continue wasting your time in this dead entry, please continue.

Posted by Hyperion67 at 2005-01-14 15:03:13    Voted 5.00 on 01/14/05
I felt I had to vote low to balanced out the clearly bias vote by module designers.... In addition, there are some fairly significant issues addressed in the comments section that detract from game enjoyment.

Posted by none ( 67.117.xxx.xxx ) at 2005-01-14 14:54:00
There is a lack of balanced gameplay that is constantly an issue. Experience points gained from completing quests are either out of proportion with the difficulty of the quest, or fall far below the experience points removed due to death. In assessment, we term this sort of occurance as "invalid." In addition, there is a frustrating lack of pin marks, locations, and invalid journal entires. IN addition, save marks are not reliably retained, so territory frequently has to be covered multiple times upon exit and re-entry the next game day. The game world is largely empty, with virtually no wandering monsters, and contains seriously repetitive and boring terrain. Failure to award adaquate combat experience points does not relaistically represent the way a character achieves veteran status. I actually received more points for killing 2 wildcats than I did for an entire lair of goblins. In addition, the focus on purely combat solutions seems to belittle the spirit of Tolken, as well as the other, more thoughtful character classes. I note the low number of votes and the corresponding rating, and realize, many of the votes probably came from the individuals who created the module. I have played many modules for many years, and for me, this module does not exceed a 7.5. It represents more of an unfinished Beta than a final release.

I do beleive that I am entitled to my opinion. 'Revenge' or some other such childish response is not why I put MY OPINION on the Vault. It is entirely the tone and content of the previous post that prompted me to write my comments in the first place.

To be fair to the work of the DM's, the server is great for new content, retooling and RP. Most DM's are nothing but class acts. I suppose my beef is with the way in which any constructive criticism or dissenting opinion is dealt with on the server. That said, it's a hardcore server, which means just that, hardcore rules and, yes Kev, it's your penny you can do with it what you wish. I am simply telling a precauionary tale.

Posted by Avalyn at 2004-11-25 03:19:00    Voted 10.00
Tyrants? I hardly think so. You are just the victim of your own actions. If you were punished, it was probably because you decided you were better than the rules. No one is above the rules, not even the DMs. Its unfortunate so many players now have chosen to act in ways which are so poor. Its defamation of the MERP UK server to act in this way and then due to the consequences of your own actions call us Tyrants. We have a simple system on the server. You always get warned before any real punishment is dished out. Unless your actions are blatant rule breaking, or harmfull to the server and the other players online.

We are here for the player, not to satisfy our own desire for power, why would we go through all the trouble of making such a detail and large server if it wasnt for the players. Please, just because you decide to act like the fool, dont defame us.

If we are nerfing things, I am not away of it, we are trying to do things twofold at the moment. 1. Keep things acceptible according to the world of Arda and the lands of Middle Earth. and 2. Try to keep things roleplay. - If you had a problem with either, You obviously didnt care much either for roleplay or accuracy but rather wanted a quick fix of hack and slash. Sadly, thats not why we are here, if you must do that, go buy Diablo 2 or something, its not expensive now.

Should any prospective player be reading this and find the comments of Nathan to be true due to my words, I apologise. We do not wish to police the server, in fact, we are trying to do the opposite, its just we have had some bad luck with players recently and are now beginning to feel the sting of it.

Posted by Nathan McNeil ( 216.106.xxx.xxx ) at 2004-11-24 20:58:00
Started out as a good server but as with most serv's, the rulers of the world became rule-hungry (abusive players didn't help) and nerfed most of the NWN engine so that all char's become by necessity the same lame fighter-types.

Unless you like REALLY hardcore roleplay (to the point where running away from monsters because you're about to die is a topic of discussion with DM's for possible punishment and de-leveling) play someplace like Stormplay or Hybrid where at least you can get the fun roleplay but without the B.S. associated with justifying what are acceptable actions on most other servers.

That said, the work put into the serv was good, too bad the people running the show are tyrants.

Posted by SNarfel at 2004-10-17 23:16:00
I think this is a fantastic server....but be warned if you like Hack n Slash and levelling to level 20 in few days or even a week.. then this is NOT the server for you. This is quite clearly stated by the creator/s of the World.

Having said that, for those of you (like me) who enjoy a good balance of RP and action, this is as close to perfection you will get. Everyone you go by.. will pretty much stop and say something to you.. (not necessarily nice though, he he). You have the opportunity here to be imaginative.. and if you and your companions are so inclined.. you can sit down in an Inn or such and RP away over a mug of ale and good food for pretty much the entire session.

All in all an excellent server, looking forward to the changes mentioned by Kev for Dec/Jan.

I've only recently begun playing on MERP UK, but I have to say that it's been a joy to play there. I've enjoyed the quality of RP; I have a heavy RP background (particularly in RP MUDs) but many of the people I've seen on this game I've felt seriously outclassed by. Even those who aren't as good at it have given it a good try.

The world itself is involving and interesting, and it's a blast to be able to run around in such a good representation of Tolkein's world.

As for Strangelove's comments - playing an afternoon and an evening and getting to 8th level wouldn't exactly leave you in a position to experience any indepth RP. I spent an entire evening just after I created attending an RP event - I've just stood around in Rivendell chatting to others, and almost everyone I go walking by seems to turn and want to talk to me.

I would say go and try it for yourself and see whether you believe Strangelove or the majority of posters here are correct. I can tell you that as a newbie I've had a heck of a lot of fun.

Quite simply the best PW world I've played on, with some fine and friendly RPers.
Good job Kev and the gang!

Well done for a sterling defence everyone. I'm new to MERP (I've been playing about 2 weeks), but have lots of experience of other PW's and this is by the far the most polished version of what a PW is all about IMO. All I have seen to date is quality area's, quality DMing, a balanced world (dunno where stranglove is coming from - you might be able to see decent items but you can't use them cos of the level restricts), and above all, quality roleplaying. I've come from mainly power PW's and to say MERP is even remotely like some of these is quite frankly an insult. Just wait til you spend all day outside The Prancing Pony or in Tharbad talking to other PC's and enjoying it just as much as hacking through an Orc cave (the DM's are also willing to give XP for decent RP which is nice too).

Anyway, I can only give this PW a ringing (hehe) endorsement and I'll be back for many more hours.

Keep up the good work Team.

I came to MERP_UK from a nice PW LOTR server where after 9 months playing there, suffering item loss on death, struggling to put up with stupid players that do use 2 weights and 2measures when it comes to RP ("what I do is RP, if you do the same it is not" for instance), reaching level 33 at the end of those 9 months with a server wipe due to HOTU in the between, one day someone suggested: "There are too many magic items in the world... do a item wipe".. and they did.. and they killed the server. For 3 months now, the server is there with a 0/64 players. Lots of us came to MERP_UK and quite honestly, it is simply the best server we could find. Lady Fate works her way very nicely sometimes.

This is NOT NeverSummer, where you can get lvl 61 items and still get your azz kicked by NPC built to do it with chars holding lvl 61 items. How can someone in sound mind say that it is too much xp/magic/items here? Top and best items around are about +10 or +8 with good qualities and you have any idea of the level requirement for those? It is low, from original game engine system.

This is not the "gardeners' playground either". Who the hell came with the suggestion that RP is only valid if you play a level 1-5 character? I know a server that after 2 years has the highest char at level 6... and they all have tolkien's Heroes names in its forum. It IS a sad joke. I live my char's story, an amazing elven hero and thanks to God I never played PnP RPG. I ofter think that I know nothing about RP and lots of players came to tell me how good of a RP'er I am. That's probably because I enjoy it. Role Play is just that: to play a role and I do try hard to do it with the best of my abilities. But I want to RP a hero, not a gardener. And I found a place where there is no lvl 61 items, not even level 30 items around. But there are enough challenge that can justify every little piece of equipement available in the world and they are not that great.

Perhaps a sado-masoquist will not be happy here, since there is nothing whipping their azz and making them suffer as much as they might like, in MERP_UK. Perhaps some lunatics that think 2 days is enough to pass judgment on anything will state stupidities like "we need a vault and item wipe".

I am glad that I can trust Kev to not be influenced by any of these freaks out there, people that see RP only in "pain and suffering". As if real life had not enough of it already. This is a fantasy world, to let people find some happiness and pleasure and most of us do find it the way it is. I play a level 40 elven archer now and for quite a while my char's been at that level and I can say that I have the best items available in this world and 1)they do not come close to the items my level 40 local vault had, 2)they are not strong enough to allow me to invade any epic place alone, making me highly dependent on a good party and strategy 3)they did not come easily and I never took death lightly only because I won't drop the items on that event.

MERP_UK is the best RP server I found with the best RP'ers around. What has level/magic/items to do with RP I really don't know and I am glad I don't. I still see this server as an extremely balanced one. Yes, one can make a fast start but it will change as the char grows. There is a "development curve" and I think the one we have in MERP_UK is the very best curve a server could have to allow char development, which is a good part of the fun too.

An impressive amount of work featuring an endless supply of automated quests and spawns, sadly let down by an ill-disciplined attitude toward player reward. With such an evident work ethic this had the potential to be great.

Call it professional agitation. ;-)

Im glad to hear your various defences and Im also glad to hear in Kevs last comment that he is aware of the problem. I can think of no experienced DM I know who doesnt agree with the very basic concept of less is more if youre not mean with EXP/loot/Magic from day one and remain committed to this principle despite what some players may misguidedly desire you are basically robbing them of any challenge. Unfortunately, once this particular beast is out the box its unfixable without a vault wipe and complete restructuring of all items, shops and spawns.

My own opinion and hobby-horses aside, the only point that really needs to be communicated here is that this is not a low EXP/loot/Magic server. I didnt actually require two days to work that out, it was evident the first time I opened a shop. Such an incontinent flow of rewards is not to my tastes, but is of course very much to the taste of many other players that I am sure will be happy here.

Posted by ElMigs at 2004-09-12 09:18:00    Voted 9.75
To Strangelove: Seems like you judge a server pretty harsh after just a few gamehours. In 8 hours you can yes get couple of levels if you only hunt for xp. That couldn't leave you much time for RPing, nor exploring the world. You critisize the high-end magic items and yet you haven't even met a single high-end creature. I think the world is pretty much balanced and gives challenge to epic levels even with all the high-magic gear. The world of middle-earth opens to you fully only after you get epic.

Without high-magic items for high-level characters, the world would be run by epic wizards/sorcs/clerics.

the xp rating helps you to get started but makes you to struggle at 30's. You should remember that your lv8 cleric isn't really a god yet ;) Try playing little longer.

And as for roleplaying, I've played there now for a month, almost daily and mostly all the PC encounters have had nice RPing and people tend to stay in their characters nicely when interacting with other people. Great deal of it is also because of the good DM job. They are quite active and tend to sort the rule misunderstandings and answer to new players questions nicely. A lot of info about rules and mechanics you can find from the forums or ask people in the servers irc channel.

And last for my own comments this is the best Tolkien worlds i've ever tried. The world follows tolkiens writings quite closely, the athmosphere really takes you into middle-earth. There are lot of authentic places you can read about in Tolkiens books, lot of npc's plus tons of quests you can spend time with your hero.

Strangelove - Im sorry you didnt enjoy your time on the server but frankly I dont see where your problems have arisen. Virtually everyone RPs here, and does it well. It would be a shame if those who read your post were discouraged from giving MERP UK a fair go... Everyone here is friendly and encouraging to new players.

If you spent more than a couple hours online and failed to find a group of RPers to join up with, I consider that very strange indeed having never experienced that problem myself. Erm... maybe its not everone elses fault... But as you are fond of saying, its just an opinion.

Hey there,

My girlfriend and I have played on MERP_UK for about a year now and if there is one thing I can tell you it's that it's probably one of the best if not THE BEST RP and TOLKIEN server out there today!

For all the hours we have put in playing on merp we have gained a lot in return: New friends, fantastic rp and teamwork and loads more! I can tell you this much: "The server KEV, MAV, AV,THE_U and BW (and the others) struggle every day to maintain is a paradise for people who love to RP and make the world of TOLKIEN truly come alive for him or herself"

I myself have spent countless hours of RPing and wandering with loads of players of which a lot have become my friends either ingame or in real life as well.

After a few setbacks because of server vault wipes I can truly say that this Gameserver MERP_UK is the best TOLKIEN-based server and NWN-RP server out there today!

This concludes my rant about the server:

FEEL FREE TO COME AND JOIN US ALL IN TOLKIENS LOST TALES @ MERP_UK !!!!!!

Yours truly,

Thurin Naur
