Player Requirements
Haks, quite a few of them.
Sorry, but as the world grows, and new content gets added, we add more haks. It increases the playability and freshness of the world to have access to all the wonderful new content that has been created by the incredibly talented NWN community.
Where possible, respawns are considered miraculous escapes rather than death. It makes for more interesting tales to tell. However, that is up to the player.
Vives is a work of art shaped daily by the talented staff and players that inhabit it. Vives is a unique world with a rich pantheon, extensive mythos, treasure chest of lore and alcoves of secrets. Roleplay is stressed above all in Vives, its inhabitants ranging from the lazy halfling happy to take another pinch of Winky's Famous Tobacco to the fallen cleric, her beauty matched only by her insanity. With active DMs, many static quests, and a website with forums that never fall silent, the Vives group is a great group to join. Vives contains hundreds of areas to explore, as well as a modified CNR and true persistence. Be you an adventurer, a crafter, or the type to sit around in a pub and drink ale while telling tales, all are rewarded. If you enjoy learning a unique history, lore and mythology, along with many hidden secrets, then come, fair traveler, to the Four Winds Inn, and take a first step into Vives, but remember well...'The fate you make, is the only fate you deserve.'

Xerah, I wasn't talking about cpc's.

That should be "Cast player characters".

RGE: If you had issues with the haks, you could has asked on the forums and someone would have helped you.
Guest: The DMs create "PCs" (called Character Player Characters), which are actually NPCs. It is far easier to RP though the PC client than the DM client. A DM's job is to weave stories and they do that though these CPCs.

DM operated pc's are the focus of this server. If you feel like being a 2nd class character in a beautiful world, this place is for you.
Actually, the evil of Vives comes in the form of exe-files which claim to be "unable to copy file" so that all the time spent downloading those huge files turns out to be wasted. I now hate Vives, and I haven't even been there.

The best PW I have been on as a player.

Vives is such a beautiful world. I came back from an extended "Vacation" and they rehashed a hellova lot of areas, added an extra ton too giving the place twice the atmosphere, twice the beauty there was before. The Roleplay is great, and even very funny at times. Staff is supportive, always helpful, and they're always around when I am. It was a tough learning curve at first, knowing where to go, the difficulty of going solo, but I got the hang of it (granted it was/is the second PW I ever played on, and the second month of my getting NWN) but there's enough regular players who are nice, and always looking to roleplay with a, eh, newbie.
Cheers!

Although the world was intriguing to me at first, I have to note a few snags that otherwise made me leave, despite some of the nice features others named below.
Lag was terrible. Every day. The server is hosted on DSL, so I'm not that surprised. Even when only a few players were on, the lag was considerable, with only a few short breaks.
Resting, while realistic (in some respects) is terribly inconvenient. Especially for mages who have low strength, and can't carry around 30 pounds of logs to make a fire that you can only use once, along with rations and a bedroll which are also required for resting anywhere outside of an inn. Sure.. realistic.. but not practical and heavily annoying when you're level one or two and can't cast more than a few spells before you need to rest again, and have to leave where you are to go alllll the way back to an inn, or lug around 30-40 pounds of camping gear to rest only once before you have to buy another set.
Also, and this is what really did it for me.. is that Vives is set in a custom world with very little custom content related to their world. Most items are in fact, pregenerated bioware defaults, complete with all the forgotten realms names and lore still on them, even though such gods, people, locations, and other things do NOT exist in the world of Vives. Thayan Robes, Balduran's Armor, Armor of Gru'umsh, etc are a few things that are common and are sold in the stores, even.
The plus side was that yes, there was a lot to do, and the experience system was very innovative and cool. The roleplaying, what little we had of it, was actually competent, although some players didn't feel the need to use capitalization or punctuation, which annoyed me. Perhaps my standards are too high.
If you're a -beginner-, this place is a good place to start, but if you're a veteran roleplayer, especially with pnp experience and a standard for excellence, you might find some things here to be rather off-putting.

Would like to try out Vives, but as a Mac user, can't get the HAK content via .exe files. Is there any way to get them in the normal .hak format?

Best RP World out there....continues to grow...contstant influx of new RPers makes this PW special. From Insane wizards...to a mob controled city...to a religious zealot spreading his beliefs through force...there is something here for everyone. Give it a try..you wont regret it.

This is simply the best server I have ever been on! I searched for a quality RP server that was friendly to newcomers, and for a world where the players could actually change the world. I found this all in Vives.
A 10/10. Great job!

The most visually breathtaking persistent world and rich with it's own history. Vives has a constantly changing complexion, storylines, and DM interaction makes it one of the best Mods out there. It is truly a world where a players' RP can leave a lasting impression on the mod due to the DMs and Builders who work to mold the areas and sorylines around the players.

Nondescript declation of praise.
I've been playing Vives for two years now. The place is enormous, always growing, the players are fantastic, the DMs are great and easy to work with (and always watching..).
But this is not a world for the faint of heart. It's hard, and it takes time to make it to the top, but lemme tell ya. From up here, the view is totally worth it.

Vives strikes just the right cord with me, for the following reasons among many others:
El Primero: roleplaying, roleplaying, roleplaying. This is established as chief priority and is the most rewarded and encouraged. Referees like to see this and will /tell you so often. Players do also. Literally every other activity is ruled by this one. A fabulous XP system is in place that allows folks to play their character and make progress w/o expressly undertaking to level their characters by "adventuring", i.e. camping and killing.
This style of play is not for everybody. The community of players isn't huge and there are rarely more than 20 players IG, frequently just a few. The world isn't for players who can't "make their own fun" and instead are always waiting for a DM to challenge them with quests and storylines. Also, good roleplayers become levelers (or crafting levelers) when they're IG alone. But, at all times I think folks are able to roleplay the characters they've created.
2. The DM and builder team provides service that is professional-quality. There are a lot of very dedicated folks keeping all these persistent worlds running, and Vives has a whole passel of them.
3. It has a very well-integrated web presence, players handbook, IRC spot and game world. Lots of NWN gameworlds have web sites/bulletin boards and players guides but I feel that the ones that serve Vives are especially helpful. The community of referees and players that is so supportive of good roleplaying works through these organs to set up and tell some really great stories. Some of the posts represent top-notch fantasy and dramatic writing--some great RP with in-game consequences takes place on the boards.
4. The game world is not huge, it might even be called intimate, but it's exactly the right size for the number of builders, DMs and players of Vives. Areas are invariably high-quality, there are few that aren't polished as well as finished, and absolutely no "filler" that hasn't been given a great deal of care and attention. The game world is all very well executed, and the scale of the world is such that politics in one area - as well as the actions of individual characters - can affect the entire game world.
5. Challenge--some of Vives is so difficult that solo play is a death sentence, and even with a group challenges can inspire outright terror. It falls somewhere between high fantasy and dark fantasy, and by and large it is not the players who are the dark ones.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this server

updated based on the unfortunate vote stuffing that happens with other worlds.

Vives would be tied for best PW I've ever played on. I'm not a staff member, so I don't have a biased opinion :P
I really enjoy Vives. It would be hard to pick the thing I like most about the word; the players, the DMs, how the world is built...and I could go on.
As long as you like roleplaying, enjoy DMs who like to further the fun of the players and enjoy an amazingly beautifully build world, then Vives is for you.
The reason I did not give it a perfect 10, is that it could use some more players. I cannot understand why this place is not crawling with players.
