Description
Ravenloft is an original DnD setting based on gothic horror themes, similar to stories of H.P. Lovecraft, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire etc. The world may easily appear gloomy to people more familiar with high fantasy, but also having a strong sense of mystery rather than the bland and obvious.

Mainly, our aspiration is to have an atmosphere that's immersing, with stories that reaches out to the players as they partake in making them, for a rich and vivid roleplay experience.

In that sense, don't let being unfamiliar with the setting discourage you. We don't strive to be different from others simply by bringing the Ravenloft setting to the list of NwN PWs, and we won't test you in Ravenloft trivia or expect you to read books before joining the server. Our primary goal - our outset - is to create a place where roleplay, in all its forms, thrives.

So what does this mean?

Some might already worry that we are dedicated to ultra-realism: micro-management of every movement, no chance of adventure and achievement, every character sitting safe behind locked and barred doors, trembling in fear of what may be going on outside.

This is not what we aim for.

What we want to give you is the opportunity. Something you can shape yourself and with others. The opportunity to roleplay in as many situations as possible in as much detail as you desire. We want the world to react in a manner that inspires and encourages you to roleplay. We will not rigidly force you into roleplaying in certain ways, as we believe that forced roleplay never is good roleplay, and won't serve anyone. We want to have faith in your ability to roleplay too, and encourage you to think creatively.

This doesn't mean that we'll tear down every 3rd edition rule to replace with anarchy. Balance is needed, because risk is needed for progress to make sense. We may even choose to do things to adjust this balance better, as long as it isn't at the expense of the roleplay. But When we do change things, it's always ultimately for the sake of roleplay.

What you really should expect is a NWN experience that to a much lesser degree rely on out of character mechanics disrupting your roleplay, and instead, more in-character mechanics that further it, providing meaningful material for it. We aren't primarily focused on whether the way you explore the world is true to real life, as much as to try to make the world you explore alive. We want to give you a better opportunity to act in character, so we want the world to act better in character. We want the world to roleplay too.

This is as good as computer roleplay gaming gets. This server is not going to fit every single playstyle out there but it can pander to most. If storytelling is what you prioritize during your D&D game-time, then this is the place. The server's greatest asset is its dedicated people and the attention to detail they posses. For the most part, very mature playerbase and most the play is in good sportsmanship even if the characters end up in competition in-game. Its as good a place to spend time as there is. I've been playing since 2008, off and on, mostly on.

I played a lot of modules but avoided PWs because I assumed that the roleplay would be weak and the servers would be full of bullies and griefers. Then I tried Prisoners of the Mist. My goodness! On this server I've enjoyed some of the best roleplay I've ever had in a lifetime of enjoying RPGs.

The community is phenomenal. There is constant effort to improve the scripting, there are a great many stellar roleplayers and in general there is an overall dedication to character and story.

That does not mean there aren't weaknesses. There is plenty of silly/weak RP and also some cliquish behavior and favoritism. But really it's what you make of it. Since I came in expecting nothing I was very positively surprised by how great the community is. I've been on the server for awhile and I am routinely meeting new players who are fun, interesting and who play compelling characters.

If you enjoy roleplay and story I highly recommend checking out Prisoners of the Mist.

So I joined this server as a last resort. Slim pickins these days if you're like me and you need your CEP and also player count and don't want to be on some misplaced social server or a 3 towns alignment gimmick server.

I knew the setting, Ravenloft, as an instant warning sign, what with being a favorite of antagonistic DMs (iirc, it started its life as a no escape PC death meatgrinder module).

But hey, desperation. It seemed promising at first: well built areas, some interesting scripts with weather and such, plenty of players, and oh neat; an immediate hook what with the horror setting and all.

Well guess what, I didn't like it. Now not to say I didn't have fun, no I had a lot of fun for a while. There are some good players here with well fleshed out characters. But the majority of my fun I think was me entertaining myself or bouncing off other PCs.

This server suffers, like most servers of stagnation. Nobody dies. Or if they do and even under player driven and dire circumstances, they return and the puddle doesn't ripple.
I don't want to turn this into a permadeath whine, but I saw a player get their head cut off, their body burned (all of this mechanically handled) and they respawned. Sure they lost some levels, but really?

Enter here also typical complaints of untouchable high level characters pushing around low levels or hanging around leaning on all the surfaces waiting for some kind of event to pop up and immediately crash it. And how can we really be afraid of Ravenloft if we can't die? And setting is cheapened because of it.

The setting itself is almost a parody of the original. The "fear of the night" RP was almost purely rote since nothing freaking happens. Half the time I spent on this server was indoors in the temple anyway since nobody is around in the off chance some murderous antagonist DM comes on or a playermonster character and kills your levels away. What happens in the temple?
A lot of staring forward, waiting for morning.

I think.. maybe in two, three months I saw a DM do three "events":

1, monster toss that was basically a DM going through the werewolf spawn list wave after wave as players ripped them to pieces. Eventually it got to Werewolf lords (maybe eight or more?) and then some people died and everyone ran inside.

2, was some plot I was dragged into by high level favorites which was basically a DMPC being arrogant and boring.

3, wasn't anything significant, DM area emote about a bunch of creepy ravens in a tree, woah nelly.

So I guess in closing, this a well made server that suffers from DM favoritism and player stagnation/ennui. I'm sorry if this is a rambling rant and my server preferences slipped in, but this server really has some serious problems. A shame because there is a lot of effort put into the build and scripting.

Been here for a year and have been playing this game for almost 10 years and I have to say it's easily my favorite server out there. The things the scripting and dev team do here border on magical.

The good:
A very well made and nice looking PW. The sytems are complex and most are custom made by a skilled Dev team. Not for new players or for those who want quick rewards. Excellent crafting system, rp xp system, time, weather and many others. Numerous maps that include other parts of the Core not just Barovia. Player base is a mix of rp first , power build dungeoners and pvp thrill killers. A couple good DM's including Heretic and Macabre.

The bad:
Many of the systems which intend to promote realism waste a great amount of playing time. Death system is harsh and unforgiving. Players lose X.P. , gold, and weapons and risk being undead if revived by another player (meaning they must be rekilled and raised again). After death a lingering "death curse" which takes the player out of the game even longer if they had hoped to regain their lost items. Many DM's making marginal to no contribution. The DM Team has a history of recruiting friends and overlooking rule breaks by fellow staff. Very slow to remove problem staff members and seem to have difficulty spotting them. Staff openly use favoritism and punish their critics. Very closed to the concerns and desires of their player base .
Consistant theme of treating player base like children not allowing them to view xp, secret Community Council elections which not surprisingly usually yeild a Council ideal for the staff filled with players they approve of (though occasionally they permit a token rebel for appearance sake). Player stories are regularly dismissed or ignored so that DM's can impose their predetermined outcomes (realism is often discarded). Numerous systems in place to slow down game play including a fatigue system that can cripple players in combat. Over use of poison and disease which is married to the fatigue system to further ensure your character is often unable to move .

Very poor management history with player factions . Crafting system while very good is countered by making some aspects only useful to the wealthy or high in level, smithing in particular is wasted because key materials are guarded by very difficult monsters or require giant parties due to random polymorphing into animals while in combat .
High scores in most areas except player relations . Some outstanding players that entertain the player base without assistance despite hinderance from DM team.

This is the best roleplaying server online currently with nwn1 and the lovely cep expansion. A great deal of content and based on a truly wonderful yet disturbing survival horror server.

The best try it out, a must for rpers and explorers.

Best wishes,
Devon Maze ;)

Amazing server. I'd like to pointo that not only th RP is great, but also point out that the developers prepared an entirely new system of crafts that allow the players to develop their ability witout being restricted to skill point/level.

Awesome experience. In every server there are ups and downs, positives and negatives, just like life. You can't expect any place to be perfect every time. I've enjoyed my time here immensely. The DM's come across as honest people, patient and willing to help out, while adding to the horror setting in unique ways. I've yet to see any sort of favoritism, and I've been around the server roughly a year now.

Top notch place, detailed, quite immersive and rather addictive.

No other server I have visited can truly compare to Ravenloft's 'potential' for atmosphere. The builders have done an excellent job with the design of areas, and even the selection of music tracks does the Gothic Horror feeling proud. I believe I at one point heard Castlevania songs - and that, my lords and ladies, gives Ravenloft a point of Awesome.

In my experience, the full potential of the setting's atmosphere is rarely fully realized however. In part this is due to the playerbase that oftentimes does not seem to want it to be a horror setting at all. It's quite peculiar to observe actually, how people are drawn to this server, knowing well it has a very particular atmosphere but still choose to ignore it and behave as if it was any generic setting. Unfortunately I feel they are missing out on a lot of what the setting is all about and at times also dragging down the experience for others.
That is nothing unique to just Ravenloft, as you will encounter this very symptom on most servers. It just gets extra obvious on Ravenloft as such an immense amount of effort appears to have gone into establishing an atmosphere that stays true to the setting it's based on.

It is not only the current players that manage to occasionally detract from this awesome atmosphere though. There are also a few quirks in the general gameplay of the server.

From what I can see, the early gameplay, if you're looking to adventure and explore is going to be daunting and downright boring at times. It's a very unforgiving world that tends to give you a good whacking at times; and oftentimes not because you did something particularly wrong either, but rather because luck did not favour your character.

Death, in my opinion, is handled in a pretty awkward manner. I won't go into details here, but dropping your equipment, having to do corpse runs, and all the OCC grief that comes out of someone character stealing someone's elses gear does nothing to add to roleplay, but rather makes me want to facepalm and log out again.

Given the difficulty of low level exploration, the gains to be had in terms of experience or loot are often dissapointing to boot, making the early game experience frustrating to say the least.

If one has the time and will to work through that first, daunting experience and manage to make a bit of gold, gain a few levels and maybe make a few friends along the way, it's a far more enjoyable experience to have.

To me, the general level of difficulty and 'in gameplay' hostile environment has the unfortunate effect of funneling all actual roleplay towards safe zones such as taverns, campfires and the like - that often get overcrowded. When you get yourself a crowd, it usually doesn't matter how skilled the players are, or how interessting the individual characters might be; the quality of roleplay *will* inevitably shoot right down drain, with people scrambling for eachother's attention.

In my opinion, the best roleplay happens in smaller groups, often during actual adventure or whatever other business they might have. It is not going to happen around a campfire, or while sitting about in tavern. The difficulty of the setting often steps on your toes if you attempt to roleplay while adventuring though; almost as if the designers were saying:

- No! Thou shallt not roleplay whilst spellunking, thou wicked fiend!

All complaints aside I'm seeing some true potential in the server, and not everyone percieve the problems that I do myself. I guess everyone looks for different things in a server.

If your true wish is to experience the gothic horror setting - look no further, because you're not going to find anything else that compares to Ravenloft in that aspect. If you however, like me, enjoy to actually 'adventure' rather than simply 'hunt' - heck, Ravenloft might still be your best bet. :P

It's not optimal in all aspects, but I'm rating this server highly. Partially because I believe others have proceeded to give it rather unfair votes, but mostly because I believe there's true potential to be harnessed within this mod if the little quirks can be worked through.

Plus, it provides a pretty unqiue experience that shouldn't be missed out on.

Just brace yourself for an unpleasant punch to the face before you get kissed.

A dynamic, Gothic setting which is home to some of the highest quality role play, development and DMing found anywhere on NWN. Can be quite difficult if approached from a more standard hack/slash/be a hero type of gameplay but the addition of scripted experience for role play makes this server one of the most rp supportive, encouraging and immersive I have ever played.

Leveling progression can be slow compared to other servers but if it's rp you're after this has NO bearing what so ever on immediate and immersive rp. Low level characters can jump right in and become involved, make an impact, be a part of things. The friendly player base is happy to help, the forum has many invaluable tips for the beginning player and the Community Council is always available for questions.

The skillful DMs of PotM possess the ability to craft an atmosphere of horror and tension that is guaranteed to change your character forever and in surprising ways that enhance role play experience.

Official and player driven factions, additional domains which are continually being expanded and improved upon have broadened in game dynamics, the horror genre and experience.

The crafting system includes customized trades such as herbalism and alchemy with more developments for future crafts in the works.

Worlds of things to see and do, player driven dynamics that keep things interesting long beyond 'what's down in that dungeon' explorations, DMs which enhance the inherent horror of the setting and developers which continually work to improve the game experience all add up to make PotM one of the best servers on NWN.

I would like to emphasize Zarathustra217 that some posters are simply disgruntled because they bitterly hold grudges against the staff - these players tend not to understand the concept of voluntary work - ; I do hope they find a new home and move on with their lives. We wish them the best.

As for the server itself, the community is ever growing, development is always active, the DM team works hard in bringing enjoyment to the players; assisting their stories. There are plenty of systems we have in place that favor immersion and bring the world a new depth of detail.

Posted by BadBelly at 2009-11-24 09:23:16    Voted 9.00 on 11/24/09
If you are a mature person who likes heavy RP than this is the place for you. PotM is a low magic, slow progression server that has a high difficulty rating. Most of the best gear in the game is crafted by players generating a lot of dynamic role play. Players have multiply ways of advancing in the game, so dungeon grinding is not necassary. The dedicated development team continues to work on the mod and encourages players constructive input creating a dynamic world for the players that changes due to IC actions. PotM is a wonderful sandbox to play in and will be around for years to come, so if gothic horror and exciting RP is what you are looking for, I highly recommend Prisoners of the Mist.

Disappointing.

While the server has many good roleplayers, the main focus of the DM quests and events are directed to established PC's who have played the module over several years and their groups, leaving the new players and other no-mainstream factions hanging in the air. Module is also way too large in my opinion, hundreds of empty areas and staff efforts are spent to build even more that only a fraction of players are ever going to visit. Criticism for the current situation is largely ignored or replied with more or less "Love it of leave it". Playable if you roll your average human adventurer and are able to spend months getting in to the various groups, unplayable for outcasts nonhuman types. Good players, ignorant staff.

I would absolutely not recommend for a new player to try this PW. A sizable amount of the player base has no interest in seeing new players; when they want a new character one of them will play it. New players need not apply. Some great staff and development but they have allowed an entrenched user base to take root which completely refuses to do some basic responsibilities in keeping a healthy roleplay community that is open to new players.

An absolutely marvelous module with a good core DM and Developer (even if a little slow) teams.

Unfortunately the ever persisting problem are the actual players and community's atmosphere, like with every open community. Very closed people and it's hard to find much worthwhile RP from the server unless you're similary minded with rest of the module and can get "inside" the OOC player groups.

Anyway, since the module is best in existance and the community, despite some problems, tops most servers, I give it a solid 8-0.25. :-)

I've been both a player and a Dungeon Master for over two years. Not only is the community a great group of people who all enjoy intense roleplay, but the developers have provided us with some outstandingly beautiful areas and continue to do so as well as great scripts and content.

If there is interest in gothic roleplay with xenophobia from natives to dark creatures stalking you at night inciting a deep fear, this is the place to play. :D

I've been playing on this server for over a year now. Having come from hack-n-slash servers, this was a rude awakening. I must've died four times in the first 15 minutes alone. But after adapting to the difficulty of the server, learning how to roleplay properly, and meeting all the other mature players... there is no other server that compares to this one, and I've tried a couple of the popular, heavy RP servers. The atmosphere is dark and creepy. The Devs are constantly making improvements, and even have a couple new Domains coming soon. Lag can be an issue, but usually only when more than 25-30 folks log in and loiter in the Outskirts. If you have more questions, visit the forums and be prepared for the Mists to whisk you away...

As a note, some of the posts below are made by certain individuals that were banned from our server due to grieving. So please take it with a grain of salt ;)

We asked the NWVault administrators to look into this, and by judging the timing and origin, they've removed the votes as being a coordinated attempt to get some sort of revenge.

I thank all else who've taken their time to share their views and opinions in honest fashion.

One last thing. -.- Wish it would let me edit my post. Anyway. They are lying to all of you in their server vault add. The death system DOES penalize you. Not only does it penalize you XP, but it penalizes you entire levels. Example. If my roommate was to die on his lvl 11 character. He would lose around three levels. Yes.... Three entire levels. And not only that he'd lose ALL of his gold and whatever weapon he was carrying on his person.

Posted by Daroff at 2008-06-28 15:42:06
I talked to the owner of the mod. Let him look at all of these negative reviews, and do you know what he did about it? Not a damned thing. Why? Because he's the reason the server has become so bad. He doesn't care what his staff does. He doesn't scare about the broken systems. And yet, all of this and he still thinks his server is perfect. What a shame.
