I might as well mention this, even if only one person ever looks at this again...
Deeeeeaaaaad....
And went out in very typical Gatecrasher-esque style too!

Though, I still fail to understand why people say "Avoid this server." It's up to the player him/herself to decide whether they like it, not what others say. Sheesh.

(Alvaresha aka Hollow-Mind)
"But, for the most part, new characters are ignored, and are considered unimportent is seems, which would explain why half the server population only plays there 20+ level characters. I found that most DM run quests require higher levels, and even if they don't, the higher levels latch onto it anyway, denying the lower levels the chance to actually, -do something- significant. Get many of those popular characters together for a quest, they all seem to step on each others heads to get the spotlight" - I actually agree with this, though, levelling up to the teen lvls is not really much a hard job (Unless you spend a month or so out of it, as I found out -.-')

I also made a paladin and no one has called me a 'whore' yet either, things have obviously changed.

Voted 10 - The server is amazing as is the roleplay, I'm not sure what the others are banging on about personally. I came on and made a complete ass of a mage with my friend, and guess what happened? we got a DM-plot straight away, a fun one I might add (Thank you, Daniel).
Then the next couple of days were quite rough... roleplay was hard to find as many already had aims and goals to achieve or something, I don't know... regardless after the brief stint I was intergrated with the square dwellers and have been ever since, I'm part of no 'clique'. I roleplay with anyone that wants to roleplay with me so if any of your new players feel like you're being left out simply send me a tell and we'll form some sort of OOC-friendship if that's what your craving, I honestly don't mind... this server is amazing you really should try it out and give it a chance, the caps are in place to encourage roleplay and discourage power-play, if you find the soft caps daunting this server isn't the place for you.
10/10, amazing server, amazing players and an amazing administration.

I do believe that in the end it might prove worth it...I dunno.

I've done a bit of game testing and I'll say that the areas are a bit too dreary for constant RP.
One tends to end up getting depressed.
I tried to be friendly with some of the "in players" and I've found it very difficult to make friends with anyone "OOC-wise." Granted I play some over the top dwarven types, but still...things are a bit incestuous it seems when it comes to RPing. There are real cliques and if you're not among them, you're in trouble.
So, make friends fast with them...otherwise you're in trouble and will find yourself out in the cold with your RP.
Did I mention it's very difficult to advance?

Just incase anyone's wondering, this place really hasn't changed, and I'm serious. In the few years I've played this server on and off, the only constant players have the exact same characters as before, which one can hardly blame them for the sheer fact almost everything that happens is epic, not epic? You might be SOL. Honestly, though the areas change, it seems attitudes, alliances, and the overall atmosphere stays stubbornly the same. I can't claim who's to blame, could be the players, could be the admins, who knows? All I know is this server has so much potential on the technical end, but it seems to piss it away on lack-luster RP that, quite literally, has turned to "piss" at one point...
Gah...this server doesn't even deserve a 1.00. Wheres the zero? Lets see...leg-humping rats, raining barrels, quests typically promoting evil ends, not to mention a horrible biased against Paladins. If you want to play a Paladin be warned. You'll be insulted regularly by people who don't know you and know NOTHING of morals...just sex and the sickening-constant use of the word 'Whore.' AVOID THIS SERVER, I BEG YOU! DON'T FALL INTO THE TRAP! ;_; The few awesome players is not worth the crap you see on this server daily!
Takeo pretty much summarized everything I might have had to say, though I will add the following.
Gatecrashers is a the good intention with which one might pave a road in hell. It was built on good intentions with the interests of fun in mind. On contact with reality, this went straight to crap in almost every way it possibly could, and there exists a continuing mindset amongst many of it's more veteran players and prior administration "behind the scenes" string-pullers that the whole ruddy thing has to be exactly as they say it must be (though even they haven't got a clue in agreement with eachother half that time as to just what that should be), and if you don't go along with that, they will make your gaming experience there a most dull, unrewarding and pointlessly punitive one by any means they are able.
Fractal was right about one thing though; they're all f'ing retarded.
Why I kicked him off the DM forums for telling the truth...well, that was probably my biggest mistake in administrating GC for the time I did!
So, my apologies to you, Fractal. In hindsight, you were right, and still are.
My advice to any hopefuls or planescape lovers...look elsewhere. Gatecrashers will promise much, especially on the Planescape setting front, and it will fail to deliver any of it. Being the prior administrator, I can say this with some degree of certainty; I tried my level best to make something better out of it, and I'm unashamed to say that I failed spectacularly.
But, don't take my word for it; go ye forth and check it out for yourself, if you don't like my advice to just avoid it. Who knows, maybe you'll enjoy it no matter what I happen to think.
Who knows, who knows, who knows?
:)

GateCrashers is a server which has gone through numerous revisions, player bases, DMs, and even Administrations. There are several areas to cover in order to give a full synopsis of this server:
Aesthetics - The server has a few beautiful areas remaining. With the most recent move to Anetra's administration, almost all areas that could be considered "beautiful" were removed. This is not entirely her fault, as many were stripped bare before she assumed command. All the same, aesthetically the server has become quite ugly for the most part. It has a tendency to actually depress players behind their screens.
Scripted Quests - Almost don't exist. You can forget about the possibility of entertaining yourself by doing them, since they're all in areas that are only accessible to high-level characters. By the time you get to them, you're already beginning to feel uninspired, and the quests themselves are extraordinarily simple. There isn't a whole lot of fun to be had with them.
Administration - Has failed abysmally. The current Admins take particular delight in squishing the fun out of the game by leaving a "paperwork wall" to anyone wanting to advance in levels. Not only do we have caps at level 15 and 20, we now include a mandatory Epic Level Application in order to even advance to Epicness. The system itself is extraordinarily biased, since the Admins favor a particular kind of roleplay and often abuse their position to ensure certain people simply can't advance. In addition, people have to fill out a nwnwiki page, make special requests to even have quests, and the Admins' current policy in regards to DMs running quests is "Don't expect DMs to run quests for you, you should make your own fun."
Dungeon Masters - Most of them are nothing but dead weight. Getting DMship, as Mister Black mentioned, is a political game in which you have to sell your soul and suck up to the current administration (and other DMs). Most of the DMs nowadays only accept the position because it gives them this miniscule sense of power, then often turn around and abandon the rest of the player base. Quests themselves are often very lackluster, since some of the DMs actually run them drunk (no joke) and the vast majority of the -few- that are run, are terrible. This includes DMs spamming monsters until everyone dies, introducing lots of no-win situations, and openly favoring evil characters over good ones. They also favor characters who are in relationships with their own.
With both Admins and DMs, any complaining about these obvious flaws results in forum posts being locked and you being vilified until you either shut up or leave.
Roleplay - Naturally, as a result of all this, most good roleplayers have been driven off to other servers. This should come as no surprise, since the Admins/DMs don't respond to player needs and have no transparency whatsoever. Players are left to "make their own fun" and GateCrashers as a whole has become a negative experience. I recommend avoiding this server if at all possible.

Very possibly the worst server in the entirety of Neverwinter Nights, from a roleplay perspective.
The areas are nicely built, if the dialogue is a little lacking.
The administration is composed of an incestuous group of friends who exclude everyone not in their clique and give one another undue benefits and preferential treatment. The only way to really advance yourself is to become good friends with someone in a position of power who will give you levels and nice items, or otherwise cyber with an admin or two (This is a surefire track to a epic level characters, nice items, and maybe a DM position. Highly recommended!)
People often make the mistake of assuming the players on Gatecrashers are good roleplayers because they have a better command of the English language than your average roleplayer elsewhere. Unfortunately, understanding basic punctuation and grammar does not - in this case - translate to good roleplay. With the exception of a small minority, your average player on GC is so bad at roleplaying that metagaming regularly happens, and no single player is capable of instilling their character with any fear of death or reasonable level of modesty. Characters regularly insult gods, demon lords, celestial powers, etc. to their face in DM quests. This is not a fluke, or a single character with exceptionally brass balls - this is almost every character on GC. No one is afraid of any consequence and basically do what they feel like - up to and including killing new players for fun right in the middle of town, and derailing DM quests by killing important plot NPCs.
DM-run events usually follow storylines that favor epic level characters. Those that do not are often crashed by epics who just ruin the fun for low levels.
There are hardcaps at level 15 and 20. This means that you are allowed to freely level gain until you hit level 15 or 20, those levels you have to earn entirely via Roleplay-rewarded XP handed out by DMs. This means that people who are friends with the DMs pass by these caps in a relatively short time (a few weeks) whereas people who are not usually take upwards of 6 months to get to level 16.
The administration is also composed of people that do not care about your fun, and will often insult you and tell you to shut up when you try to bring up an issue, rather than work with it and treat you with civility. Overall, Gatecrashers is not a friendly server, and does its very best to discourage people from having a good time unless those people are a select few.
Highly not recommended.

Well, I have to agree with others that the custom content is very nice. Athetically speaking, the setting looks increadible, even if it takes Gigs of haks to run it. But, other that I can't say much. They have a serious cliche problem. Almost all the characters seem to fit one of two descriptions. If good, smiling, confident, shinning light of . Or if evil, brooding, wearing black, and snap if someone tries to strike up a conversation. Now, that said, not all are like that, but so many are it's rather annoying. Secondly, it's very unfriendly to new characters. Not XP/Monster wise, I'm talking role-play wise. You have one of two options from what I've seen to get noticed. Either a) Kiss the ass of a higher level, and more popular character so you'll be alllowed into their cliche. Or run around town doing absolutly stupid things for the sake of attention like a child. But, for the most part, new characters are ignored, and are considered unimportent is seems, which would explain why half the server population only plays there 20+ level characters. I found that most DM run quests require higher levels, and even if they don't, the higher levels latch onto it anyway, denying the lower levels the chance to actually, -do something- significant. Get many of those popular characters together for a quest, they all seem to step on each others heads to get the spotlight. Death is taken with a grain of salt, and PKing is quite frequent for the stupidest of reasons, even against lower levels. They may have good in-character reason, but that really isn't fun to be killed by someone that towers above you. Overall, while the setting looks increadible and vivid. The role-play is severly plagued by these problems, and make it very tiring to try to play a lower level character....

Okay so i'm biased 'cause I play here, but 9! Because nothing deserves a 10 and the staff are great, players are great, custom content is great and the gameworld is really well built.
