Adds a new placeable 'Fireflies' to the game. These are like the butterflies and are used to add atmosphere to an area. Inside the zip file you will find the HAK pack, an ERF to import the placeable after you associate the HAK with your module, and an example Module.

This little item is one of my favorites. It adds a lot of atmosphere for such a small thing, nice work! _________________________ NWN Shield Reskins Link New Small Shields Link

This is a compilation of the old system into a single score. There were 17 that made this score of 8.95.

Yo dawg! Slap up a HOTU version if you want my vote. Peace ouwtz!

Yeah, I would really like an updated SoU version too. Will there be one?

Do these work with SoU yet? They look really cool, can't wait to use them. Any plans for other bugs, like bees or pixies? ;)

Ok, strangely enough it worked right after I posted that. I'm very impressed, and I'll definitely be using it in my new module.

I am truly lost. I added the hak, imported the erf, and still no fireflies placeable. What am I doing wrong?
Posted by vandread78 ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-05-04 00:27:00
I admit I know nothing about scripting these suckers, but isn't it possible to just change the lifetime of these things to a mere second or so. That way it would appear as if there's something flashing off every now and then.

Hm, I must admit this is one of the best placeables I have ever seen give yourself one hell of a pat on the back man.

Tseramed, I agree. Sadly this isn't possible with a purely emitter based animation system. Now that you got me thinking about it, I could probably do it by making each emitter constantly on and turning those off and on with an animation.
Maybe I'll retouch this in the future, I've got a lot of projects on my plate at the moment. Thank you for the feedback.
___
tetsu96, random lengths and alpha aren't possible in the Aurora engine's particle system. This might be possible with the method outlined above and a long animation loop. A lot of different "random" lengths and alpha levels could be animated in a loop long enough that you didn't notice it looped.
Light sources are just out of the question though. You can have a lightsource in a placeable, but it's one lightsource per placeable (wouldn't be each firefly) and you have VERY limited control over them (4 lines in placeables.2da), you can't even set the brightness, that's hardcoded by the engine. We can always hope for NWN2 though. :) Thanks for the feedback.

This is a great hak for atmosphere. But... fireflies blink suddenly, brightly yellow/green, for about a quarter second. Then they don't flash again for 15 to 45 seconds. So although these are very nice, they don't actually remind me of fireflies... yet. I would be excited and super grateful if the author could take a second shot at it! Any hope of seeing another version...?

I like this a lot - but it'd be neat if the flashing of the fireflies was a bit more random (varying legnths, brightness, etc). Maybe even if they generated a low light source when they lit up (5 meter green for regular fireflies, etc...)...

I have to say this is my favourite hak pak so far.. it
really lends some atmospheric beauty to the game.
For those that don't seem to get the placeable showing up
in the lists.. place some butterflies, edit them, and go
to "appearance" and choose the second "butterflies"
appearance above the first one.

These look really good, thanks for the work.
I appreciate the explanation on how to speed them up, too.

You have to import the erf in the toolset before the stuff
will show up. Go to file->import.
The Vault should really include a standard readme file
with all incoming uploads that explains how to use these
things. Expecting most people to know how to import
objects into a game is too much (don't argue with me -
just trust me).
Most people just want it to work out of the box and that
is what hak/script/etc developers should strive to make
happen.

Well, the mod's in the mod folder, the hak is in the hak
folder, and the .erf is in the erf folder.
And absolutely nothing shows up! Your mod is there, but no
fireflies, I have tried putting them into a self made mod
(I've fixed it so that they are actually a placeable now)
and they simply don't show up.
Ummmmmm, any ideas???
Posted by dobervich ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-02-01 16:34:00
Extract the mod file to nwn/modules
Extract the hak file to nwn/hak
Start a new game and use the fireflies module and it
really should work. They're just particles, so there
won't be any weird texture issues because of your graphics
card.
If it still isn't working for you after you do this,
please give me more details about what happens when you
try.

I'm looking forward to using this, but I can't get it to
work!! I've unzipped it into the hak folder and installed
it into the mod (mod properties, advanced etc) but its not
working, and neither is the trial mod for it. Help me so I
can use it please!!!

Thank you for the kind words everybody.
Redcap, it actually was quite simple to make, once I got
the hang of emitters. It was really my "learning
emitters" project. ;)
