I made this simple hak for a private server world and decided to share- in case others might not know how to edit a .set file. I love the suspense of walking blind through the grass and being surprised as enemies suddenly appear out of the tall grass. (Looks great in close with the camera hak) The grass seems to keep the monsters from seeing you- so one can sneak up pretty close to them before attacking (HINT:set monster perception to low, unless they are tall like a giant). You might also make a script for the 'on area enter' section that allows the player a bonus to their hide skill, due to the tall grass. (Just a thought) There is a DEMO module in here too. May the Great Lady of Compassion shine on your adventures in the Grasslands!
Grasslands was made from the Hills and Homes with Edges hak by Thallion,Doyleyboy and Smolin. I simply adjusted the grass color hues and the grass height in the set file. Skies were added from Ivodon...I think.

Looks very well done. About the Bonus to Hide on entering: You can set a bonus/penalty for all Listen and/or Spot checks in the area. It's in Area Properties -> Advanced -> Check Modifier Spot or Listen.

This looks GREAT. Definately going to be used in my PW.

Hey, be sure to check out Archaic's excellent mod called
Lord of the Rings: Sons of the Steward. Archaic uses the grasslands tileset brilliantly in this module. Hope to see others try it out in a mod of their own.

Heh heh the first thing that popped into my head was the Jurasic Park 2 scene also :p
A job well done! A truly unique tileset!

Heh, no prob. I really only started leaving comments after my first creation too, and even then not often enough. I've implemented your grasslands into my upcoming module though, and I really enjoy them.
Take care, and keep creating!

Archaic, thanks for posting. I appreciate the kind words and enthusiasm. I felt the same way about the tall grass effect and was rather let down at the lack of responses.
Honestly, I had made up my mind not to bother sharing again when I noticed your comments. It is amazing what a few moments of time to post a positive opinion will do to make hours of work and testing worth while for the project maker. I realize that I have downloaded countless haks and rarely stopped to comment....now that I have been on the other side of the fence I think I will make more of an effort to support others with a simple post to say thanks.
I liked your idea for the use of the water to make the marshes. I'm certainly going to try it out. (Some fun ideas already cropping up in my mind...hehe) Might even share the results. Thanks again!

Okay, played with this long enough to evoke memories of Jurassic Park: The Lost World...Remember the only good scene in that movie, where the raptors stormed through the grass to take down party members one by one, and all you really saw was the high grass swaying furiously? Totally possible to duplicate that sort of scene here. And for only 1 megabyte's worth of hak download time. Very cool.

It speaks to exactly what a treasure chest of un-navigatable content the Vault is that this hak has received so few comments. Excellent work! For a relatively low byte size, you can have grasslands (with really dramatic wolf attacks, mind you), wheatfields, cleverly obscured treasure, and (if used with the cool placeable water hak -also on the Vault) very cool marshes.
Good job!

Sab: Thanks for the comment. Yes, the grass increases the polygon hit. No helping that...but for a world builder or a mod. maker it might be worth the trade off for the interesting setting. I certainly wouldn't go about creating "Grassworld" with it, or anything like that, but an area or two shouldn't hurt too much. Thanks again for the comment! Good luck with it.
Sab'bryn: Thanks for the post...You are right, I forgot to mention that the grass had to be set to on. I plead "old age" exemption for my forgetfulness. ;)

I'd be interested in any other comments from folks out there that have used Grasslands in game play.

Not to be confused with the previous post ... the only serious drawback is that it loses the visual effect when a player sets their video to "no grass" ...

As nice as it is with more/taller grass, I noticed when I toyed around with it myself that it gives some serious performance hits.
