We have taken this, repaired the issues that we could, then added this to tilesets where we thought it would help to expand the usage of that tileset."

Sorry, I'm tired. Anyway:
Actually, given where the iron bars are, I think it's metal stripping in the floor decorations. You can see them in real life, too, in those crushed-stone floors- very labor intensive, but pretty.
I second the wish for layers of underfloor rather than the solid stone, but this is a great idea anyway. Very good for castles built into cliffs and so on as it is, really.

A suggestion, give the pit a texture that would show a more accurate view of the ground under a castle... it would likely have some foundation work directly under the floor, and then would lead to dirt, soil, clay in sediments.

The steel bars are called "rebars." Concrete is poured around them and they provide additional strength to the material. It's a relatively new technology though, and unlikely to be used for medieval tiled floors.

I like this. It instantly evokes ideas. The duergar mining their way into a castle. A horde of demons clawing their way up from the abyss. Simple yet very, very effective.
