Title  Mountain Tileset (v 1.01)
Author  Adam Miller
Submitted / Updated  04-04-2003 / 04-08-2003
Category  Tilesets
Expansions  NWN - 1.29 or lower
Description
This is a cleaned up version of the tech demo of the mountain tileset that Lucifer Church released some time ago. I've taken the basic tiles and added a number of the rural terrain, crossers, features, and groups. There are some additional reskinned tiles from the forest tileset. Finally, there are five new tiles created specifically for the steep mountainside, including two wall crossers, a cave, a tall waterfall, and the mountain stairs. Note that there are some issues with this tileset, most notably with walkmesh and clipping issues. Please see the readme file for details.

A good tileset that I've used in my module work. Nicely done!

This is a compilation of the old system into a single score. There were 11 that made this score of 8.81.

I'm getting tired of seeing these hak's and looking forward to using them, cause i cant! You see there is one problem: "NWN - 1.29 or lower" - i use 1.31 (of course), so cant they bee updated?? it really sucks hard that they cant be used!!

Any chance of a winter version to go with the winter rural tileset? plz =)

Snow covered mountains with pine trees... mmm mmm good! =)

Is this tileset SoU compatible?

Anyway thanks for the great work, it really looks sweet.

Just a lil bit of constructive suggestion.

Would there be a way to make your sheer cliffs be a bit more barren or with rock protrusions? In the Sierras, or several other symilar areas there are usually sections of bare rock on a cliff face, mossey rock, boulders with lichen, bigger boulders with lichen, decomposing granite with layers of mineral deposits visable, weathered rocks, and big ole patches of exposed earth where erosion is taking place or has taken place.

Ah, and another thing, NWN needs thicker shrubery to cover forest floors (large ferns and shrubs and thickets) and more gradual transitions from were just about every object meets with the 2D Flat ground. :P I mean think about it, doesn't moss grow in the shade? or was that in the sun? and doesn't dirt get on the rocks or buildings where traffic is heaviest? Thoughts for future releases.

Adam,

I have entirely fixed (or at least greatly repaired) the walkmesh on almost all the tiles in this tileset (I am still working on a few - mostly entrances). Please contact me if you wish to see my improvements.

This is cool.

Comments:

* Some of the edge tiles render grass - making framerate plummet.

* I would actually rather see mountains that were grey/rocky and not navigable at all. This would solve all walkmesh issues (heh) and make mountains a nice barrier - kind of like the mountains in Ultima..

I rather hate Bioware's sheer vertical cliffs.

Just kiddin around ... It's a great set, Mr. Miller. Very useful in my upcoming pw mod: Harry Potter in the Lost World!

heh kiddin' again ... Actually I'm gonna use it for alot of island and Northern frontier type areas. Keep up the good creations.

I really like this tileset, it does wonders for the game. But I will not be using it unless there is some improvement on the walkmeshs, sorry. While I really love it, especially with the 0/1/2 hills that make it a lot of fun to go mountain climbing, henchmen AI and creature AI simply has too much trouble navigating through it.
I would really like to see someone come up with a version 2 that adresses this issue.

I'd like to replace the grass texture by the Mine interior texture... How could I do that? This texture is also in the game so the file size would'nt be bigger.
Can you give me a link to a tutorial for changing these textures?
I've downloaded this tileset and it's really fantastic!!! felicitations Adam! Thanks a lot!

Quick comments. . .

The file size is low because it uses no additional textures. One of the issues with many of the tilesets out there is that they duplicate all the textures. While this is great for reskinning, it makes the hak pack size huge. These days I'm trying to keep them as small as possible.

The walkmeshes are probably as good as they'll get, which is okay but not perfect. You'll see a couple houses in there. I think someone else will end up combining the mountains with other things (including high bridges most likely).

The minimap issue should be fixed in this release.

And yes, there are some new castle walls that will make an appearance in Dreamcatcher 4 (which comes out very soon). Shortly after the release, I'll start uploading the contents of the hak individually (assuming I have time with a new daughter in the house). This would include a second version of the mountain tileset with the castle walls. And yes, they're Danmar's, though I ended up create some new tiles to support them.

Posted by tuyen ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-05-19 06:31:00
why the file size is so low? Is it a completely new tileset or a add-on for the rural tileset?

Posted by Anonymous Coward ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-04-25 12:13:00
This just RULES! If you can get the Walkmeshes too work right, and make it more complete (adding back the missing rural stuff like houses), that would be great!

Other stuff on my whishlist would be high bridges - they would look *really* cool in this tileset.

Maybe I should start learning to use 3DSMAX after all...

This looks like the lake district!.... Brit remark, or possibly a bit of Ireland ... nice stuff! :)

Posted by Culliganator ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-04-19 15:48:00
Does the "docks on the minimap" issue mean it is possible to blank out the minimap or has this already been done?

Posted by Yanah ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-04-15 11:54:00
Could you pleeease make winter and desert mountain tilsets pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease???

Okay - minimap issue fixed. I've also added a new tile - the "crypt/dwarven entrance" that is embedded into the steep mountain wall.

Posted by Adam ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-04-08 07:36:00
Docks on the minimap? Weird. I'll take a look when I get a chance. It's probably a straightforward search and replace to fix.

I also picked out a door from the crypt tileset that would make a good entrance. I'll see if I can put it together over the next few days and fix the map problem too.

Posted by DMcSlay ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-04-08 06:37:00
First off: Great job, Adam.

Has anyone else noticed that the mini-map displays docks all over the place?

Posted by Adam ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-04-08 05:31:00
There are endless possibilities for interesting things built into the mountain sides. Unfortunately the amount of time I have to do all these projects is pretty limited. I'm going to shoot for a "dwarven entrance" look (thanks for the thoughts Vilance), and probably leave it for awhile. Maybe after Dreamcatcher I'll get a chance to do some more work on it . . .

Posted by Kurgan ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-04-07 21:16:00
This proves that mountain terrain is very viable, thank you Adam and Lucifer.

Posted by Martin E ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-04-07 15:41:00
Adam, I'm including smaller trees for the updated tree Hack, managing to get polys down by 50% on average, plus a medium and small version of each type.

Keep looking at your waterfall and at the endless possilities for adding features to those mountain sides, like large statues, cliff carvings, Built in towers etc.

Too many ideas, too little time

Posted by M.G.Skaggs ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-04-07 12:29:00
Great job Adam, can't wait to check this out!

Nicely done, I am just starting to get my feet wet on tileset creation.

Posted by Vilance ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-04-07 12:02:00
Adam, for a basic dwarven entrance go with the squarish cliff entrance, just rip the entries for the blocks that make up the door and the null door entries. other than that look thru the dungeons and crypts, as they have some interesting doorways. havent seen to many arched doors if thats what your looking for, the large good castle entrance is ok for that i guess. best i can think of...
...sometimes making this custom content i wonder when im going to play the game...
