Title  NanoSky Pack II - Hi Res
Author  Nanosphere
Submitted / Updated  02-12-2004 / 03-01-2004
Category  Other
Expansions  HOTU-1.59
Description
This is Part II of the NanoSky Packs. This HAK contains four new skies : Ash Wastelands with erupting volcano and day/night transition, Volcano Heart with a lake of fire, Mountain Peaks with a sceneic vista and day/night transition, and Planar Outlands with the great ringed spire and day/night transition. This is the Hi-Res NanoSky II Pack, it uses uncompressed TGA textures to attain best quality. This HAK will not override any of the default Bioware skyboxes. Includes a demo module showcasing the four skyboxes, module requires SoU and HotU 1.62.8047 or higher.

This HAK contains skybox entries from the part I and III packs as well but not the textures for them. In order to use them you will have to download the first and third NanoSky Packs. They can be downloaded at http://nwvault.ign.com.

Update Notice - Sunday, February 29th, 2004: The 2DA file has been properly padded in this update. This will change the order of entries in the 2DA file. Any modules using this pack prior to this update may have to be updated if they are to take advantage of the updated pack. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Nice work! I just discovered this and decided to use one of the skyboxes in my module. Will give you credit.

I think the ice sky is the greatest fit in my frozon wastes area.

Great Job! those skys are much much better than Scythus' Skys.

Cheers! - Prince Rouse

Minor Update: Added entries into the skyboxes.2da file for Doyleyboy's and Mohss's skies.

If you want to use Doyleyboy's and Mohss's skies in conjunction with this HAK, simply add their HAK files to your module along with mine then select the appropriate sky from the list.

Please Note! Their skies were not originally intended to be used with the HotU skybox system. As such, you may encounter bugs when using their skies in such a manner. For best results read the documentation included in their files and apply their skyboxes per their instructions.

Minor update: updated textures for Ash Wastelands and Volcano Heart skies (looks better IMO.)

I'm not sure if I can correct the problem with the seams where the texture wraps. I know very little about modeling in Max. I used one of Biowares skyboxes as a base and only did a little modifying to the model itself.

I'd probably have to mess with around in Chilliskinner to tweak how the texture is mapped to the model. Unfortunatly I have not had any experience with that yet, so I am clueless as to how I would go about doing that. I'd like to though then I can probably map a decent roof to the skyboxes. I kinda cheated and pinched the top vertices of the skybox so the missing roof would not be visible in game. :p

If anyone knows how to fix it and is willing to help that would be great. :)

There is a problem... the tga is not perfact at the border and you can see the line where east and ovest edge encounter in planetary day , ash day and mountain day. This can steal much of the fun.

The HAK itself doesn't need a beta patch, only the demo module does. I only threw the module in there to help show the HAK off, it's not really important. You can still fire up your toolset and add the HAK to your favorite module if you want to try it out.

The 1.62 patch will be out "eventually" so please be patient. :p

Posted by MokahTGS at 2004-02-14 20:16:00
Again....this was made with the Beta patch....which means we can't look at this until Bioware releases the next patch or we all use the beta patch which is just foolishness.

If you're going to release something this cool, how about actually releasing it in a format the community can use.

Updated to help fix a couple bugs when using with large areas. Improved Planar Outlands night sky.

Yeah I'd agree that an underwater one would be sweet

Posted by Slygar at 2004-02-14 09:33:00
Hmm weird. When I try to open the demo module it says "Cannot open- was created using a newer version of the toolset and/or resources" or something like that. I have the latest patches and everything- whaddup? you arent using a beta patch, are you?

Posted by Lady_Oonagh at 2004-02-14 08:22:00
Hey Nano - these are great! This is one of those things that could really make the toolset and the game feel fresh again. I don't know if you're looking for ideas for more skies, but here are a few:

-Tropical jungle, maybe with temples or Easter Island-style heads off in the distance
-Swamp with moss hanging off the trees
-Underwater
-Greener snow-topped mountains that would work with the rural tileset for an alpine village effect

I was musing to myself just last week 'these skies need to have mountains in them for my mountain city'. Perfect timing! Saves me the trouble of doing them myself, which is always a good thing :D
