Title  Aribeth Armor for PCs/NPCs
Author  Ta'lith
Submitted / Updated  05-15-2003 / 10-22-2003
Category  Armor
Expansions  NWN-1.30
Description
This is Aribeth's armor converted for use with PCs and/or NPCs. I extracted all model files and textures directly from bioware's Aribeth model (c_aribeth.mdl and c_aribeth.dds respectively). *I strongly recommend that you download the latest version of Neverwinter to use this hak.* Note: I used high resolution textures so be forewarned that this may run slowly on some video cards. The armor is completely customizable. The armor can now be used with female characters of ALL races. The armor scale factors was taken directly from Bioware's model files so they are as close to the actual race scales as possible. This hak has not been tested for compatability with other haks. If you encounter any problems or have any comments on the hak please feel free to e-mail me. Update 1.3: This will be the final update unless major bugs are found... Now optimized for size and takes up only 3.35mb unpacked (instead of 9.09mb). Revision: Fixed the torso skin texture.

Seems that crusaderky was very thorough with this hak, I'll be sure to keep his comments in consideration when finishing up my VIVE NWN project. Thank you crusaderky =)

I resized something, deleted hands, and I went down to less than 2Mb uncompressed, with no quality loss.

a good work indeed, but:
1)I miss the point of wasting 280kB for just a bit uglier version of the "fists of doom"
2)the neck texture is 513kB, since it also contains the whole chest. could you reduce it?
3)same for the bicep textures, 257kB each since they contain also the shoulders (could be 129kB with no quality loss)
4)chest textures has a line, or cut, on the tit when looking from the intern. It's not very visible, however.

Essential hak for anyone wanting to use an Aribeth model that is able to change her outfit appearance. The official model appearance only displays her main armor, regardless of her actual outfit. With this hak, you can manage her inventory/armor and her appearance will change accordingly.

Um, from what I understand, I need to place the content of a hak (in this case the Aribeth Armor hak) into override to play with the armor in all other modules (in solo only). I've just found out how to apply a hak to a mod but now I can't figure out how to play with the armor in other mods, since it doesn't work when I just put the hak into override I assume I have to extract FROM the hak itself, but even then I don't know how to do that! So, how do I do it? Thanks in advance and this stuff looks great!

Leafhair,
If the exe will not execute for whatever reason, the archive is still in WinRAR format (*.sfx.exe to be exact) and can be opened in WinRAR without renaming or ever running the exe. Go directly into WinRAR and hit the open button on the file menu. Self-extracting exe's by default will NOT show up, you'll have to go to the "Files of type" box and select "All archives including self-extracting" or "All files". Go to the directory with the exe and open it. This will open the archive as if it were a regular RAR archive (bypassing the exe) and from then on can be extracted like any other RAR archive.

Let me know if it still doesn't work after this and I'll send you a regular RAR or ZIP version. I'll consider changing the archive format, but right now I like the exe since it is universally supported (well, it's supposed to be anyway...) without having to download WinRAR or any other archival programs.

Can you perhaps post this as a zip or rar file? I'm getting some very odd errors trying to use the exe version of this hak. I've tried renaming the extension to .rar instead of .exe and also .zip and neither has worked either. The error when running the .exe is "Not enough memory" in its program, which shouldn't happen on my computer.

mx,
I have just reduced the glow on the breasts and the back merges better with the rest of the torso texture (no more exoskeleton). It looks much better now IMO so try the newest revision. Sorry about that.

As for the change in frame rates, this could be attributed to the way I'm now reading in the textures. Instead of using the entire DDS texture for every model part, the main texture has been cropped and only small portions of the textures are being used at once. Not only is this size efficient, but it's also less system intensive. :)

Thanks for the comment.

Just thought I'd mention that the strange problem slowing the framerate to a crawl when a creature wearing outfits with several parts of this armor was onscreen, which I mentioned below, seems to have disappeared with the latest version (1.3). Now the framerates are about the same as with any other outfit even if all armor parts are used.

The "flares"/glow on the breasts in the new torso texture looks a bit odd though, a bit too bright and sharp... And the ridge (or whatever it's called in english) along the back seems very pronounced, making it look a bit more like an exoskeleton than skin.

Other than that, good work. :)

To whom ever is posted below me,
This sounds like it could be a problem in the .2da file, but I think it's more likely that you just need to get the latest patch for NWN. Try getting it and see if it makes any difference. I have also just updated the HAK so you should should try the new version as well...

im pretty noob with all applying haks. I've got the hak loaded and i restart the toolset. However, when I try to pick up the armor in the module, it's AC is reduced to 0 regardless of what it says in the toolset

Posted by Ta'lith ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-09-14 19:59:00
The HAK file must be extracted from the RAR and placed in the /hak directory wherever you installed Neverwinter Nights (I think it's mentioned in the readme?). When you play online, the armor will only appear if you play in a module that uses this hak. If this is the case, all other players will see the armor correctly. Otherwise, your character may appear as a blank model in multiplay. To get around this, the hak contents can be extracted to the /override directory. This will allow the armor to show up in any module without being directly linked to the hak, but to show up in multiplayer, all other players must also have extracted this hak into their override directory. I hope this helps...

two questions (im a noob) in which directory do i have to copy the file and does other player see this armor if i play online?

Posted by Ta'lith ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-06-18 22:17:00
mx,
The armor pieces were extracted using high resolution textures only. This could cause some frame rate problems on lower end video cards or systems. However, I'm uncertain as to why this would be occuring on only the pelvis and thigh parts since the chest piece (to my knowledge) uses the most polys and requires the greatest processor/video card useage because it contains a danglymesh. This is very odd indeed... I wish there were something I could do about this, but I don't have that problem on my system so it's nearly immpossible for me to test for a fix. I looked over the models/textures again, but didn't see any apparent problems with them. :( Sorry.

There is something odd with the pelvis and thigh parts of this armor. When used, the game slows down to a crawl when the character wearing it is visible on the screen. If both are used (like in a full, aribeth-style armor) the speed drops to like 1 FPS at most. Never experienced any such problems with other custom armor or equipment.

Well, this hak is cool. I always wanted to wear this armor, and now even the guards of my mod can wear it. But there is a problem with the swords, I cant run my mod if there is any PC or NPC wearing them... :(

Posted by James ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-05-24 18:51:00
I like the way the armor was done. it's pretty much prefact. I've created a male verstion of Aribeth's armor and combined the hak file to your recreation. It looks great in my mod, and it fits perfactly as male armor so when you change from female to male it will come up as a cool looking male versoin of Aribeth's armor instead of a blank in the tool set. It looks awesome on half-orcs males.

Posted by Velexia ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-05-24 10:45:00
umm... let's just hope no one tries to stab you in the heart when you are wearing this armor

Posted by Ta'lith ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-05-21 13:15:00
MakubeX,
To my knowledge it is not possible to use this armor without the hak pack. You can extract the hak pack into the neverwinter override directory and this will make the hak files useable in any module without opening modules and adding the armor hak seperately to each. However, this poses several problems. First, in multiplayer, if someone you're playing with doesn't have the exact same hak extracted in their override directory, they will not see the armor. And second, the module that you pick up the armor in, must have the hak attached to it (but the character can then be exported to any other module). Modding the standard files would be complicated and probably not even work, since Aribeth only has one model file - as opposed to the 15 PCs use - and her texture file is in DDS format which is unuseable by PCs. To change that, I think there would have to be some major modifications of the game mechanics.

Posted by MakubeX ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-05-21 11:01:00
Is it possible to use this without the hakpak? Maybe by replacing the standard files in the game?

Posted by Balgin Stondraeg ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-05-19 14:59:00
I'll compatability test it with the decent armour fix hak 9ArmorAddOn or soemthing like that) that sorts out the chain and scale graphics and a lot more. As that hak uses about 90 torso's yours could cause problems.

Posted by Ta'lith ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-05-19 12:29:00
Someone else had a similar problem. I'm working on it now, but I can't find anything wrong with the hak pack itself. The particular error that you've stated is showing that the toolset can't find the correct index number in the 2da file which is weird because the 2da file is correct (I've checked it several times). It's possible that you'll have to save the module and restart the toolset after you load the hak and before you import the erfs just so the toolset can acknowledge the hak's existence on start up rather than on the fly. This happens with any hak that adds clothing or armor of some sort. You can also create the armor by yourself without using the erf if you still can't import... Just create a new armor with the specs: Neck 005, Torso 038, Belt 000, Pelvis 032, R & L Shoulders 024, R & L Bicep 013, R & L Forearm 022, R & L Hand 007, Thighs 015, Shins 016, Feet 011. So far restarting the toolset after loading the hak and then importing has solved the problem with just about everyone I've heard back from, but I'll keep checking the files to make sure. Hope this fixes the problem. Please let me know if it doesn't and I'll see what else I can do.
