amazing stuff

Sounds pretty cool - i'll have to check this out soon (but annoyingly I dont have access to my computer!).
The only concern i'd have is how the recording works. You state its a realtime recorder, so guessing from the screenshot I'd assume you click on the pedals for the notes?

Sounds fantastic though. Thinking of the things you could do with it - for instance, compositions could be limited in complexity by the skill of the bard composing. In turn, all user compositions are accessable to other bards wanting to play, but playback is dependent on the bards skill.

Better yet, make skill checks during playback, with a failed skill check resulting in a "bum note" :D.

Looking at the log output in the screenshot, it seems like it works on delays between notes (and i'm assuming triggers samples / uses a soundset for the notes). Then for a saved composition the list of delays and notes would be stored, and upon "reading" back a track the scripts would recognise all the delays within the track? Then surely (and hey, maybe you've already done this! hehe) you could modify the tempo from there - effectively allowing people to compose pieces that they would not be able to "click" in manually.

Very cool though - a really interesting RP device for bards. :)

This is sheer genius, I can't believe the work you must have put forth to get this as far as it is!

Hi all,

1.67 is final. However, I am doing some beta testing for DLA, so the next version will be a bit delayed. I can post up the version without the sequencer and models (but with realtime recording and the full soundsets) sometime this weekend.

It's a great project for NWN !

Awesome... glad someone is finally doing something like this. I'll check it out and vote a bit later. :)

I have a drum sound set, which will be included. I'm also reworking the sound files for more volume.

Alrighty, I've got some of the modeling underway. New screenshot of the piano console. That was the hard part. Keys and buttons will be much easier.

Posted by Vulcano at 2006-02-22 20:18:15
Yes, you'll be able to add lyric stanzas. The bonus of this is that music need not be used. Bards that prefer poetry to music can just record their poems for later use (as opposed to the hassle of cut and paste as nauseum, and these also save over sessions). I don't know how well this is going to work in a higher traffic PW, because it's all based on delayed commands, and lag may affect sound synch/quality. I don't have high hopes for the full system for PWs, but short songs without polyphony should be fine, as should the poems.

Posted by Primogenitor at 2006-02-22 13:25:40
Nice, very nice. I particularly like the ability to record stuff "live" as it were :) Don't suppose you have any plans to add lyrics too?

Posted by Vulcano at 2006-02-16 19:58:36
Hey, Ioovius. Why did I leave? Just general burnout on top of the fact that coding until 4AM was interfering with real life too much. Plus, with the PW quest system I wrote for Arabel, any DM can use that to make a fully persistent, private party, respawning quest without even opening the script editor. So I really wasn't needed as much. I took about 6 months off from NWN starting about September 2004, but I've been back almost a year now, working on some projects, like this one, the non-proficient weapons hak posted here at the vault recently, a variable currency system (just like the D&D copper, silver, gold, platinum), and some other secret projects. I also moderate at the NWN2 forums and keep myself pretty busy (but without going overboard).

A lot of this new code is tuning up my chops for the upcoming NWN2 release. I'm going to update systems that need it for NWN2, release some general stuff, and maybe finally get around to producing a full length module. I don't know if I'll get back in the PW business. By releasing systems (that may apply to PWs) and modules, I get to say "when it's done." And a fine thing that is, compared to worrying about who is exploiting what at 4AM. But I still recommend City of Arabel to anyone that wants to play on the best server there is. Best ever.

Hey vulc. I didnt know where else to contact you so here i am. First off, you do rock! Second, i was wondering why you stopped dming on CoA. :D Keep of the good work though!

I just had a revelation. I can use OnClick for everything. I can replicate a real keyboard with all the buttons, bells, and whistles with custom placeables. So, that's what I'm going to do; no conversation will be needed. It will also make writing music very visual and very easy. Couple of new planned features:

Full set of 240 chords (guitar and piano; I already sampled maj, min, dim, aug, 7, maj7, min7, aug7, dim7, and hdim7 for all 12 key signatures)
Music notation placeables, including a 16th note, 8th, quarter, half, and whole, with a tie bar, and a rest indicator. They will light up blue to show you which note you are transcribing. The Sheet Music will act as a "floppy disk" in the sequencer, and save your songs persistently.
Full auto-accompaniment, using the chord bank
Adjustable tempo
Buttons for record, synchro start for percussion, etc.
The ability to merge or save tracks to your instrument and play them anywhere in game.
DM functions for selecting songs from the module custom song bank (make a song in the studio module; save the game with the song in the sequencer. Rename the save file from .sav to .mod, then open it in the toolset and add a song directly to the palette).
A magic jukebox placeable for taverns, so that PCs can insert coin and pick a song from the module list

I tell ya, I'm getting pretty excited here.

Ok, back up. Added a tone changer for switching from piano to harpsichord to pipe organ (playback still limited to piano for sequencing and recording, for now).

Oops, visualeffects.2da was left out o the hak (was using from override). Will update shortly.

New version up. This one has both recoding capabilities; an activated recording harp which records notes from the keyboard in realtime, and a sequencer which writes to sheet music for more accurate intervals. You can also name and rename your tracks. The bookshelves on either side will generate a new recording harp or blank sheet music if they are empty. Enjoy!

Posted by Vulcano at 2006-02-10 20:00:42
Thanks, Mokah! It should work for NWN2. I may have to change the audio format, but I have plenty of converters.

I should have a new version up Saturday. I've been playing with a new toy I created called a "recording harp". It measures the milliseconds between realtime notes, records it, and plays it back for you. Still needs a bit of tweaking, as there are a few bugs, but I just played, recorded, and played back Scot Joplin's "The Entertainer" in realtime. Lots of fun.

Vulcano...you just rock. I'm hoping that this system will work in NWN2 as I will use it there if it is.

Posted by Vulcano at 2006-02-06 17:03:44
Sphax, c'est genial! Yes, that works well. Try the mod as it is, and use page up to get an overhead view of the keyboard, and then zoom in. Works great. So, in effect, the placeables keys can be much smaller--perhaps 10% of the previous dimensions. The player can even sit on a piano stool while looking at it (and that can give play permissions, too)..The only problem will be placing such small objects in the toolset (but I can code an in game perfect alignment).

Maybe it's possible to make a piano in the real size (or little greater) and players will be able to play it with the zoom of the camera at the maximum ?... I'll make it after I've done my current creature model ! ;)

Hey, Sphax. I'm looking for a piano keyboard. I only really need 2 keys total, one white piano key placeable, and one black, then I can build the octaves just using the two placeables. The white key should be 4m long, 0.5m wide, and 0.5m high. The Black should be 2.5m long, 0.4m wide, and 1m high. This will allow for putting a whole three octave keyboard in a 2x2 area (20m²). If you can animate them to move as a piano key does when pressed, even better.

Vulcano, excellent. I always felt something like this was missing from NWN.

Whne I made my first hak I did this same thing, only it was a piano. I didn't understand 2da's so I couldn't get the wav's to play with the triggers.

However, I did get sound objects to play things like happy birthday etc.

I wonder if we could get something like this in patch 1.68.
I already requested it for nwn2 which got virtually ignored.

As I said, still beta. Just have the working keyboard in this version. I do have the sequencer down, as well as the auto-chord. Next I'm doing convo workstation input and SetName so you can name the music.
