Title  Shifter Expanded Classes hak
Author  GLWizard
Submitted / Updated  04-12-2007 / 08-21-2010
Category  Other
Expansions  Requires Both Expansions (SoU & HotU)
Description
By default, only the druid class qualifies for the Bioware version of the shifter prestige class. However, the PnP version of the shifter allows any class capable of assuming an alternate form to become a shifter- including individuals capable of casting the spell, Polymorph Self.

This hak is an attempt to bring the Bioware shifter a little bit closer to the PnP version, at least in terms of which characters are permitted to enter the class.

The list of changes include the following:

- Clerics (provided they have chosen the Animal domain as one of their two domains), rangers, sorcerers and wizards are now eligible to enter the shifter class. This is accomplished via a new class feat, Alternate Form (one each for the cleric, ranger, sorcerer and wizard classes). This feat is automatically acquired by a character upon level-up, once he is of a sufficiently high level to have access to the Polymorph Self spell. Rangers, sorcerers and wizards with this feat are eligible to enter the shifter class, provided they otherwise meet its requirements (which remain unchanged: Alertness feat and able to cast 3rd level spells). Clerics who receive this feat and otherwise meet shifter requirements can also enter the shifter class, provided they have chosen the Animal domain as one of their two cleric domains.

- Version 1.11 ONLY: The Wisdom requirement for the Outsider Shape, Construct Shape and Dragon Shape feats (25, 27 and 30, respectively) has been changed to a Lore skill requirement (27, 30 and 35 ranks, respectively).

- Version 2.0 ONLY: The Lore requirement for shapes has been removed; the three more powerful feats now require the previous feat as a prerequisite (i. e., Shifter Dragon Shape requires Construct SHape, which requires Outsider Shape, which requires Undead Shape).

- Version 2.0 ONLY: There are now two Dragon Shape feats with different prerequisites: Shifter Dragon Shape (Epic Shifter, Construct Shape) and (Druid) Dragon Shape (Epic Druid, 30 WIS, Wildshape 6x/day).

- By default, the Dragon Shapes' breath weapon now includes levels in cleric (Animal domain required), ranger, sorcerer and wizard- as well as druid and shifter- for the purpose of calculating its power.

- The list of bonus feats available to the epic shifter has been changed around. Most notably, Great Wisdom has been removed from their list, while the following epic feats have been added:

Blinding Speed
Damage Reduction
Epic Fortitude
Epic Reflexes
Epic Spellcasting (all epic spells)*
Epic Toughness
Epic Will
Great Constitution*
Perfect Health
Superior Initiative

*New to version 1.11

A readme file included in the package provides complete instructions for use, a summary of the changes to the game, and some of the consequences of its use (including some suggested third classes for each type of shifter).

Version 1.0: Original version.
Version 1.001: Changes to readme: Minor typos corrected, revisions made (yes, I'm that anal...).
Version 1.1: Updated for NWN 1.69.
Version 1.11: Added Epic Spellcasting (all epic spells) and Great Constitution to shifter bonus feat list.

Hi, Garradeoso-

No, I have no objection to having the SEC used on your server. (Well, once we can get it to work for you.) I'm rather flattered, actually. On to business, though...

I just installed the SEC on a fresh copy of the character builder I use (PGC3) and levelled a sorcerer up to level 9, and he was able to level up as a shifter without a problem. So, I think I'm going to need more info from you in order to help you out.

One thought I bring up now, simply to eliminate all possibilities: keep in mind that access to the shifter prestige class DOES require the Alertness feat.

If that doesn't solve your dilemma, I'll need a description of how you're levelling up your sorcerer. You can either shoot me an E-mail through the NWVault, or else describe your level-up process here- as you prefer.

Hey, raltyinferno-

My apologies for not acknowledging your comment for two years. I do thank you for your interest in SEC, and I hope you've gotten some use out of the hackpak.

Hey, Excoriate-

Thanks for the vote and the kind words.

When I first started working on this pack, I was determined to remove the Wisdom requirement from all of the Shifter shapes, since that requirement wasn't PnP. (In fact, the shifter really should have all of these shapes before he hits epic levels- but anyway...) At the time, using a Lore requirement to control when a shifter gained access to the various shapes made sense to me; the Lore requirement allowed a shifter to gain shape access sooner than the Wisdom system, while not allowing him access too early. It was only recently that I took a closer look at the abilities gained by a PnP shifter- and realized that he really should have access to the various shapes before hitting epic levels (though he wouldn't have access to any special abilities before epic levels). Dropping the Lore requirement, and moving to a shape feat requirement system, seemed the best compromise to me. And here we are...

This may not be the last version of SEC, either. I'd like to look at adding at least a few of the Epic feats available to a shifter (most notably, Fast Healing). As it stands now, it's hard to justify focusing on shifter epic levels beyond what is required to gain access to his more powerful shapes. Again, we'll see.

GLWizard:

I like what you did with the lore removal. I personally think using prerquisites make more sence. Then again opinions are argumentative.
Thanks for the awesome job and your valuable time.

Hi, all-

Version 2.0 is now up. I have removed the Lore requirement for the more powerful shapes; each of these shapes now requires the previous shape as a prerequisite (i. e., Shifter Dragon Shape requires Construct Shape, which requires Outsider Shape, which requires Undead Shape).

In addition, Druids and Shifters each have their own version of Dragon Shape; while each functions in the exact same way, the two feats now have different prerequisites, as noted in the readme and description above.

Enjoy!

Hi, all-

Version 1.11 has been posted.

I'm not sure what I was looking at when I stated that all base classes had access to at least one Great Attribute feat as a bonus feat. (In fact, the barbarian, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger and rogue have no such access.) While I could have left things as they were, I have opted to add Great Constitution to the shifter's bonus feat list. In addition, version 1.11 gives the shifter access to all of the various Epic Spellcasting feats he should have had all along.

Version 1.11 continues to use the Lore skill requirement for the various Epic Shape feats, though it will probably be the last version of the SEC that does. As noted above, I'm looking at removing the Lore requirement in a future update of the SEC, since it really isn't PnP.

Hi, ShaDoOoW-

Thanks for your thoughts on my hackpak.

When I first started creating this hak, I couldn't have told you what an OnLevelup script WAS. :) It's true that such a script would be cleaner- and probably more accurate- than the Alternate Form feat system I use here. I might consider producing a levelup script for this hak in the future. For now, though, I'm fairly satisfied with the current system, since it doesn't require the user to modify the OnLevel scripts in his modules- and I wouldn't begin to know how to do the updating for him.

We'll have to agree to disagree about Great Wisdom. While it is true that all of the base classes have access to at least one Great attribute feat, many of the prestige classes do not (including the Blackguard, Dwarven Defender, Pale Master, Red Dragon Disciple, Shadowdancer and Weapon Master). Given my belief that Great Wisdom was given to the Shifter mainly to grant him access to the Epic Shapes (which currently now require a high Lore skill instead), I don't feel the shifter is missing out on much by not having access to Great Wisdom.

With that said, I do see myself going back to this hack in the near future for a revision. While the Lore requirement system for the Epic Shape feats works well enough, I'd like to bring the Shifter a bit closer to PnP. He really should be able to access those shapes before his epic levels; at the same time, he wouldn't have access to the spell-like abilities until he reaches Epic levels. The best compromise here would be to allow him access to Undead Shape as normal, and add Outsider and Construct Shape either as available at 21st level or requiring the previous feat first (i. e., Outsider Shape would require Undead Shape, Construct Shape would require Outsider Shape). I'm still thinking about that, as well as Dragon Shape (which may require all three shape feats, or perhaps just one).

Actually, the Dragon Shape feat is another reason why I'm considering a revision. While considering your thoughts on the matter, I discovered that while the shifter should have access to Dragon Shapes before his epic levels (as noted above), the druid really DOES need a Wisdom of 30 to get the PnP version of Dragon Shape. As such, a second version of the feat may be in order. Somehow, I missed the fact that Epic Spellcasting should be on the shifter's bonus feats list, so I need to give him access to those feats as well. Finally, I may consider giving him a different Great attribute feat he can actually use; right now, I'm leaning towards Great Constitution. While it's true that his higher Con may be overridden by many shapes, I think he needs the boost in order to qualify for some of the feats on his bonus list (most notably Perfect Health and Damage Reduction; I think the latter, at least, might be worth pursuing for a shifter).

First, you dont need any system feat in order to allow shifters class for other classes. But OK, you will bypass need of OnLevel up script.

Second, I dont think its good idea to remove Great Wisdom. Yes this feat should not be available by pnp, BUT bioware decided to add those feats to most classes epic feat list. So when you remove it from just one of them, you will unbalance it. There is nothing else than Great Wisdom at shifters epic bonus feat list, so its quite useless to take more than 10levels needed for desired shape.
