Have you ever wondered why two handed weapons didn't do much more damage then one handed weapon, yet you give up as much as 8 ac to use one? I have. Have you also wondered why Bioware saw fit to make a spear a large weapon? I've wondered about that as well. Here's the fix, or at least my version of it. This hak makes spears one handed so you can use a shield with them and it basically makes all the large and double weapons do twice the damage they used to, with better crit ranges and higher multipliers. I made it for a mod i'm working on but i figured others could get some use out of it. I welcome any and all comments....I may have gone a bit overboard on the large weapons.
I was disappointed to find that my characters could not wield a shield and spear so im really excited for this hak but how do i add to NWN _________________________ Meow Meow
Certainly agree with one-handed spears: it was perfectly common in the ancient world to use spears up to 2-3 metres long in one hand, with a shield as large as a hoplon in the other.
Even when the spear was later lengthened to the 5-6 metre sarissa (a pike, by any other name), the wielder would often have a small shield attached to one arm, even though the weapon was definitely 2 handed.
Mind you, 2-handed pole-arms in general are less than useful for individual combat - they are really more for packed masses like the phalanx, as they are difficult to wield.
Jamro's comment on the equalising effects of damage bonuses are interesting. I always thought that damage bonuses (from fire, cold, acid etc) would be better as mutiples of the base weapon damage rather than fixed die/dice values - that would have the effect of making the greatsword increasingly better than the longsword.
...But take the str18 warrior mentioned, and up the weapons to +5 with 2d6 fire damage.
Now the longsword damages an average of 20.5 while greatsword does 25.
As the bonuses from enchancements increase, the relative difference between 2 and 1-handed weapons decreases,
while the benefits from carrying a shield with possibly even more enchancements increases even further.
I'm not going to use this, but getting one handed spears is nice anyway.
Just checking, but doesn't all 2h weps, including spears apply a 1.5x STR multiplier in addition to the higher damage die?
Also you must remember that wepon damage values are best considered as averages for normal, and critical hits.
A great sword without str mod deals aprox 7 damage on average per swing. (between 2-12),
A long swsord without sgtr mod deals 4 damage on average, and only gets 1x str bonus.
When all possible modifiers put into the equation, a greatsword is indeed worth up to the potential 8AC you sacrifice in the process.
When you factor in critical hits, some weapons come out even further ahead.
the greatsword for example is best used for consistent heavy damage, The greataxe is better for high burst damage using critical hits, the scythe even more so with it's higher multiplier(which is why the scythe is a wep masters wep of choice for so many).
A puny long sword is going to dish around 8 Damage on average for a crit at 2x. A greatsword will deal 14, a greataxe will deal aprox 18 average for a crit, and a scythe is aprox 20 if memory serves.
This is before any modifiers... Now add in strength mods, and things get really ugly...
the greatsword weilded by a modest 18 STR (+4) will gain the base +4 for str, then an additional .5, for a total of +6 to base damage!
that puts the weapons damage range at 8-18. 8+18/2 = 13 per swing average... or 26 damage average for a crit.
The long sword instead only gains the base +4 for a total damage range of 5-12, 5+12/2= 8.5 average damnage per swing.
when you think about it, that IS worth a loss of up to 8 ac when you start getting your BAB up there, a weapon with serious buffs on it, and a str of 20+... Double damage is by no means nescessary...
but neat that you accomplished it:) It certainly could have merit in some cases of course (IE a samurai mod where you want the Katana to be brutally more effective than it is).
PS don't hate me for throwing all those numbers out there in a way that seems contrary, I just wanted to try and show that 2x damage might be a bit extreme... But still the call is yours to make.
I must apologize for not having a screen shot or any kind of documentation. Simply put, all large weapons are doing double damage and spears are one handed. An example of a change is the greataxe does 2d12 dam , base crit range is 19-20 and crit multiplier is 4. I made Katanas a large weapon 2d10 18-20x3. All large weapons were given a boost.
