Description
A murder mystery unfolds in the little rainy town of Valas. A local man is accused and it is up to you to clear his name. Was it a simple crime of passion, or something much darker? To solve this mystery you must unravel the shadows that surround Valas and its priestess, Jael.
Terrible module. I would like to know What is HoF material in this boring adventure.
I did overlook a few things for sure as it says Dungeon adventure and Heavy H&S. I even overlooked the picture above.
Yet the high score (plus HoF status) and the gameplay length (4 hours) made me think this could be a good interlude for my character who just needed a level. I also wanted to find the solution to the murder mystery. No real mystery as the solution is given to you right from the start.
* Spoilers *
The so call mystery is kind of a joke, it takes no more than 20 minutes to find the two journals, nothing compared to Cormyrean Nights. The rest of the module is nothing but pointless H&S. Let's see how about a bunch of beetles for starters? OK, now, let's see 50 zombies? After that you get undead in crypt and more of the same. You get to meet a guy who need help with his relative, fine but this turn into another 7 boring fights. Three or Four would have been fine. Got to the next level only to find another legion of the dead. Was also unable to level up in prestige class due to level drain. At that point IU got tired of the fight-run-rest-come back and deleted the module.

Please finish part three in the original Bioware toolset.
Mac users don't have 2 yet and Dave Mason said you were almost done with part 3 anyways. _________________________ Steve's Characters - please don't forget to vote on them if you play them.

Nice module, combining hack and slash with a detective kinda of story. Some humorous elements along the way. I laughed when I found Ned (I'm not sure about his name), hiding inside the crate and the holy cow incident was funny :).
The crypts' puzzles weren't difficult but were entertaining. I liked the whole "retrieving items for the Lord" quest. I soloed it with a level 5 fighter. Some battles were a little difficult. From the top of my head, the one with the umber hulk cause I wasn't prepared to see a creature like that. A clarity potion did the trick. The other was with the man Jell told me to meet in the crypts. Problem was that he attacked me along with a high priest and some zombies. But drinking potions to boost me, helped a lot. And finally, the stone guardian was impossible. Many immunities and protections. Of course, I had the option not to disturb him by not taking an item. I had to reload cause I couldn't fight him.
As for ghoul lords. There was one, in the last battle before freeing Sano but for me it was relatively easy and I don't remember anything about death magic.
All in all, a good first module. It would have been nice if there was at least one henchman for those who decide to play solo.
Uh...wow...I haven't been here in like 2 years. I can't believe people are still talking about my mods. Um...what can I say, I'm about to check out NWN2 and could possibly finish TLW3, maybe even in the new toolset. I really don't know at this time.
As for the comment on Ghoul Lords...dude, I have no freaking clue what you are talking about. I haven't picked up this mod in a long time, but I didn't even think I had put Ghoul Lords in there and I know there isn't death magic. So, I think you might have the wrong mod.

A good fighting based module: nothing really to complain about, no ridiculously tough combats, no utterly baffling puzzles that stall things for hours. I don't understand this talk of ghoul lords using death magic...

WARNING ADVENTURERS: DEATH MAGIC SPELLS IN THIS MODULE. What a shame. It was going pretty good until you decided to have the ghoul lord cast a death magic spell that could wipe out each player with one roll. Absolute crap, the most ridiculous thing I've seen in 50+ modules. Yeah, that's what a module for levels 3-5 needs: death magic. I actually thing you get satisfaction knowing parties will unexpectantly get obliterated by this garbage, that's why I give you a 2. Totally soured the adventure, we didn't bother to finish it. A good module writer wants it to be hard but also wants adventurers to survive and have a good time. There's absolutely no place for death magic in a low level adventure.

Major plotkiller: in the crypts, if you "trick" the stone guardian into coming out of his room and you go in, the door closes and cannot be opened b/c the guardian has the key.
Up to this point, the mod was OK. But, I'm not keen to replay it and I don't give a rat's behind if there's a workaround.

I played this excellent murder case and vote a "9" :) The story and dialogs are well-written. The maps are correct and puzzles interesting.
BUT the fights are too tough !!! Too many opponents are "Impossible". My Priestess and my Rogue friend died often and had to reload too many times :( That's the bad point.
We encounter no bug. The only thing is that Lord Tharn should say that he opens the doors...
A default perhaps due to the patch 1.65 : the Persuade check always fail with my score of 9 for my Priestess. Only my Rogue friend gain one with Grael for the captain's shipment. It is frustrating !
As often, we gain too many XP by killing.
How can I know the name of the NPC we encounter like Lord Tharn ? Without introduction, I called him by his name... Weird doesn't it ?
Also when we board on ship at the end, the finale scene played twice with 2 groups of guards and twice the 3000 XP reward.

Excellent murder case and story :)
We enjoy it but the fights are hard :(
Too many "Impossible" encounters and too many deaths...

Hi Eye4NEye,
I'm enjoying the mod. Got stuck a bit at Crypt Lvl 2, and found the hint on this page.
The acronym RTFM coulda been meant for me; I started as a L1 fighter, not noticing your note that I needed to start with a higher char. But as everyone else has said and as yourself noted, it's do-able. Adds a challenge too. I look forward to completing this mod :-)

Excellent! Jael or her henchman locking you inside the tomb and doing the undead father's family quest made this a winner aside from doing the living quest.
The time doing this allowed Jael to escape making an excellent transition into part 2. _________________________ Steve's Characters - please don't forget to vote on them if you play them.

Really enjoyed the module. Despite its date people should still consider it. Have installed both Exp and 1.64 patch, no worries. Played 5th level Paladin/Fighter and finished around 8th level. After a brief visit to the Halls of Advanced training to do a little shopping, went right on to chapter 2.

Really enjoyed the module. Excellent story that was building towards something different that what was thought at the beginning.
Had both Exp and 1.64 patch, no worries.

The door was locked upstairs the first time. No, really... it was. Hey, STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT!!

I have the latest patches installed and both expansions.
*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*
In the first module however, in the inn (great name for an inn, by the way!)... nothing ever happens. I've gone upstairs, talked to every person, tried every door and clickable object (unless there's a hidden switch of some sort). I guess I'm just asking this... am I being stupid, or is there a script not firing?

I have to say that this is a wonderful module. I had a blast playing this. When I first got the game, I tried to official campaign but was bored after a while. I tried the Expansion module the other day but found it less that lacluster. I have since decided to try the player generated modules and am amazed that the players generate better modules than the game makers. Anyhow, this was great. Eye4NEye, you did an awesome job. The story was gripping and intense. It drew me in and kept my attention. The playability was great also. I started with a level 5 Fighter that I started in a module called The Peasant, which I would also recommend. I had no trouble. The fights were tough but balanced. I have read all the comments and with no disrrspect to any other players, the challenges are easily overcome with planning. I made sure that I had potions of antidote and healing to deal with disease and poison. Anyhow, I wanted to say thank you for a job well done and that I am looking forward to the follow-up module greatly.

A well-balanced mod with plenty of action, tricks, and traps to keep just about anyone entertained for hours. It is surpassed only by its sequel.
