Where do you get the reagents for casting the Ultima type spells? I figured they would be at the Moonglow magic shop but they only carry the NWN type magic items. Please help.

put it in the Modules folder in the Neverwinter Nights directory.

Well, I'm giving up. Atleast for now. The Ultima IV side of the module is great. To the best of my memory, it is an astonishing reproduction of the original game. The NWN side of the game, however, is not so hot. It's lacking just about all the bells and wistles we've come to expect from a top-rated module. In particular, the lack of henchman inventory management is very irritating. Both Geoffrey and Dupre had ACs of 14 and 16 respectively at 6th level?!? It has become virtually impossible to keep them alive for more than a few fights at a time. And considering the heavy hack-n-slash nature of the module, this is a major problem. All in all, there is tremendous potential here but the designer doesn't seem too interested in making the necessary updates. Oh well.

Posted by Del at 2004-06-01 06:55:00
Ok, inspite of my trouble with Shimano, some of the other henchmen I tried leveled-up just fine. I still haven't tried Despise again so I'm not sure if the 2nd level exit problem is a show-stopper or not. And, I did get an email reply from Demi who helped answer some of my questions. So, I've decided to push forward with the module and will let people know how it goes.

Posted by Del at 2004-05-31 08:14:00
Ok, a couple of more problems: henchmen dissappear when they level-up and you can't exit the 2nd lvl of Despise the way you came in which makes retreat impossible. I'm not sure if there is another exit; if not, respawning would be the only way to get out of the dungeon. So...it seems the module has some significant bugs as well as a general lack of polish and no designer support. I guess if I want Ultima IV for NWN, I'll need to stick to Zonker's version.

Posted by Del at 2004-05-27 20:23:00
Ok, I have answered a couple of my own questions:

1. Henchmen respawn next to Lord British.
2. When asked about dungeons, Lord British gives the order they should be attempted in.

Still curious about who can be hired as a henchman and wether or not virtue has anything to do with it.

PS - I'm really taking a walk down memory lane with this module; Ultima IV has got to be my favorite crpg of all time and this modern retelling is wonderfull! Thank you.

Posted by Del at 2004-05-27 16:52:00
Ok, the more I play, the more I like. I have another question about henchmen: who are they, where are they, and does your virtuousness have anything to do with their willingness to join? I went to Trinsic for a paladin and found Dupre, who I thought was a henchman, but he didn't offer to join. Is that because he is not a henchman or because my honor is very low? Also, I was told where the rune was but couldn't find it. Lastly, to reiterate, it's slow going with regard to XP (everything is worth 16XP) and gold (unless you steal). Is there a specific area or dungeon that is good to stick to in the beginning considering a wrong turn can mean instant death? Thanks.

Posted by Del at 2004-05-27 14:37:00
By the way, what happens to henchmen when they die?

Also, I love the way the dialogue and journal systems were implemented. I think they really work well in the NWN environment while staying true to the spirit of the original.

Posted by Anonymous ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2004-05-27 09:05:00
Yes, Del. My sentiments exactly.

Also, do check out the other Ultima IV remake Avatarship, which is equally well-done.

Posted by Del at 2004-05-26 20:02:00
I've played around with the module a bit more and really love the attention to detail put into this version of U4. The only problem I've come across so far is the fact that monsters spawn-in right on top of the party. This makes exploring, particulary for 1st level characters, very dangerous. Also, it seems that XP is only awarded for killing monsters, not for completing quests which makes advancement seem slow. I would either up the monster XP or add some quest XP to speed things up a bit. Afterall, we've got 40 levels to spare! So long as the encounters scale, everything should be ok. Lastly, henchmen inventory management and multiple henchmen are always nice features to consider. At first glance, this module seems to provide the nostalgic trip that it was meant to. I only hope that the designer will continue to support his work.

Posted by Del at 2004-05-26 08:58:00
I understand that the path choosen by the fortune teller determines the starting town. Does it have any other effect?

It would be nice if the readme file had more info with regard to how the Ultima 4 system works in relation to the D&D system. For instance, which classes can use the ultima magic system? How many henchmen can you have at a time? Etc. Thanks.

if you want to play ultima 7 and SI then just use exult. it uses all the old ultima 7 and SI files with a new executeable/client that will run under windows 9X versions and NT versions.

Posted by MisterK ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2004-04-17 17:04:00
Does this mod use the original NWN's magic system? What is the use of reagents when scrolls can be purchased?

Can someone help me? I'm a little confused.

Hi Devi,

It was pointed out to me that a second Ultima 4 remake had been posted and so I downloaded and played yours for a bit. Thought I'd come back and congratulate you on a great effort - it was a good thing you decided to finish it and release it.

Again - great job !

Zonker

****SPOILER****

To find the rune of justice, very carefully search the grate on the floor of the cell with the felon in it.

This mod is great! Thanks to the creator! ^_^

OK, Im abit confused, how do I do penance in the jail cell?? Anybody know?

A very worthy remake of Ultima 4. The other Ultima remake was well-done and had a lot of creative scripting, but the awkward dialog feature made it hard to play. I like the straight-forwardness better in this one. Some ultima music and the alteration of the NWN monsters into ultima-esque ones would be welcome additions. I would love to see this author's take on Ultima 5 or 6.

greetings !
one of my reasons, besides the one that i play d&d in real and i really love it, to buy neverwinternights was that i thought of ultima fans who recreate the old ultima games. i did not play your module yet, but if its ultima it must be great. i thought of recontruct ultima VII - the black gate. maybe we can work together on this..
by the way i have a programm called slomo. it slows ur comp down so that you can play the old ultima games again :) if anyone likes to get it . . .

To StijnArnauts:
- Read thy signs more carefully. It's not all free to take.

- If you start in Magincia, exit town and search for the moongate! (That's by far the worst town to start in.)

- Maybe the conversation with the gipsy is not interrupted if you use the keyboard instead of the mouse *shrug*

- Can't find the rune of justice, either. Doh!

Say can you please make a mod based on Ultima 7 the black gate too ? Thats my favorite ultima game hehe. This mod however was very good indeed. keep up the good work.
I miss Iolo Shamino and Dupre hehe

I've discovered why my honesty and justice ratings are so low. In Lord British's castle there is a secret room with chests that everyone on a quest for avatarhood may help themself too. They have a script on them that lowers honestly, justice, spirituality and an other virtue I don't remember. I'm guessing that's not the intention, since you have a plague there that says its free to take.

I just thought I'd pop in again and mention a few more bugs and suggestions. (all IMHO offcourse)

> Some of the small islands don't have map notes. Buc's Den and Verity Isle off the top of my head, most of the others too I think. Oh and if you don't mind terribly I think it would be a good idea to go over all off the townmaps and add mapnotes like "Tavern", "Town Hall", etc. to the maps.
> On Verity Isle you've forgotten to name the mapnote of the moongate and of the entrance to Moonglow; they're still labeled "". You also didn't place a sign at the entrance of Moonglow. You did it for all the other towns so I think it might be a mistake.
> I've got two empty journal entries. One is is called "ERROR, blank journal entry: VirtueRiddle000", the other "ERROR, blank journal entry: Henchman". I know the second has something to do with the hechmen dying in battle.
> There are a LOT of journal entries. Maybe you could work something out that when you get partial avatarhood in a virtue all the related entries disappear and get replaced by one entry in the completed quests folder. Something like "I chanted the mantra KUF at the shrine of stupidity outside the town of Mundrim and achieved partial avatarhood! I was granted the letter Z as a vision.". All the other journal entries could at that point be deleted.
> Even if you don't like that suggestion it would be a good idea to change the "I have found the shrine of X !" journal entries so they mention the location of the shrine. I found the location of the shrine of spirituality early on but I didn't remember how to get there after I found the rune, because the journal entry wasn't detailed enough.
> I think a little quest XP is in order every time you get partial avatarhood in a virtue. Something in the range of 500-1500.
> One town (I think Vesper) has two exits (one north and one south) that lead to the same map. I hope that's the intention and that I'm not missing a huge part of the map :-P

PS: how do I raise my honesty and justice ratings ? Hawkwind doesn't seem to be too pleased with me :-)

Finally, a playable conversion of Ultima 4! I just couldn't get into the other one due to the extremely tedious and cumbersome manual conversation system. Thank you for this!

Posted by _Data_ ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-07-24 11:36:00
Hmm

What Race/Class are you supposed to play in this module?
Or are all of them allowed? (does elf fit in ultima world
for example?)

Thanks

Posted by StijnArnauts ( ..xxx.xxx ) at 2003-07-24 07:29:00
I'm playing it for about 2 hours now and I like it a lot !
I like it better than the other Ultima 4 for NWN, which I got tired of really fast.

pro's :
+ Really good use of the journal!
+ I prefer how you handle the conversations. I don't like having to type everything yourself.
+ Good use of lighting/effects
+ Just a really decent job in general.

con's/bugs:
- I started the game in the town of Maginca (after answering the questions) with no way out but dying and clicking respawn so I got raised at the castle. Is this normal? Did I miss something ?
- The conversation with the gipsy at the very start of the game was constantly cancelled. She introduced herself and asked me a question and the conversation ended. I clicked on her again, she introduced herself again, asked me two (other) questions and the conversation ended again. I had to click on her 4 or 5 times to hear all questions.
-I experienced a lot of lag during the conversations in general.
-You seem to hand out very little experience for killing monsters. I got a grand total of 1064 xp after playing almost 3 hours. I think it's about 16 xp for each monster killed.

I also need a hint :-)

I don't know how to get the Rune of Justice. The local lord tells me to repent in the cells and I've searched them but I don't find anything. Please help :-)

Dear Devi,

many thanks for providing us with this module - I'll sure will spend some time on it because I am still a big fan of the Ultima games ...

though in your readme.txt your write:

" To make up for the fact that I could not take direct keyboard input from the player,"

This simply is not true. period.

I highly recommend you look up how "SetListening" and "SetListenPattern" NWN scripting functions work.

yours,

Yoshiko
