Description
This is the beginning of a bard-based single player campaign, featuring lots of dialogue, henchmen with very different personalities, and RP choices that will carry over between chapters. As the campaign begins, your bard has been summoned to the City in the Sky, a legendary city of avariel (winged elves) and other fairykind.
Again, there is a lot of dialogue here. You may need to talk to people several times before they trust you enough to give you quests. Henchmen will also initiate dialogue at various points to give their opinion on what's going on.
Most combat can be avoided and XP is encounter-based rather than kill-based. But don't think that means there's no combat at all! Be sure you buy good equipment at the beginning....
I was genuinely surprised at how much fun this module was. The premise is so simple, and the design ultimately quite basic, but I love bards and this module not only gives you a chance to give an actual performance, but it has a lovely atmosphere as well. There are a few unintentionally funny things, like the previously mentioned bug with the wings (HotU wings would look so much nicer...), and the very, very fast pace at which both the PC and another NPC sing their songs. But it's easy to overlook those things and just take this module for the light-hearted experience that it is.

I recently finished this module. It was enjoyable, though there are some rather annoying visual bugs with the wings at this point. An update to the HotU wings would be welcome! -B _________________________ My NWN Blog FRW Character Creator

I love class-specific mods, and the potential of a bard module had me excited to play BardSong 1. In the end, I had a lot of fun playing this little module. It may not be the most dynamic or involved module available on the vault, but it?s a fun little adventure with some intriguing things going on. I played this using a new elven bard character and I allowed the module to level me up to its requisite lv6. Apparently doing this allows you to gain a few extra skill points due to some of the custom hak content. My character emphasized ranged combat (bows & spells), and therefore really relies on henchmen and summoned creatures to stay alive. Fortunately, both are available to you when you get to the point that combat becomes important. The story is that you have been summoned by the queen of the winged elves to play for her and her people in their city. Upon arriving there, you?ll discover that there are some problems and you?ll be given the chance to be a player in helping to solve them? The story is generally pretty simple, but there are some intriguing things that happen late in the game. There are also some fun side quests, though nothing too sensational. As one might hope from a bard module, the dialog is quite good, and allows you to roleplay an adventurous bard very well. There are a lot of ballads available to you via books and NPC?s, which I thought was one of the highlights of this module. Your performance for the queen is nicely done (I loved ?The Maid of Islington?) and entertaining. The elvish town is nicely designed, though it was conspicuously lacking homes for the inhabitants. ? But then, do elves sleep anyway? Merchants are well stocked with a variety of wares, many of which are very handy for a bard?particularly an elf. I found the shopping to be a lot of fun, and especially liked the models! Had to get a nice outfit for my performance. The combat in this module is pretty light. In fact, there are 3 fights that I know of. All can be tough, though all are fairly easy to handle if you are smart about it. One of the big keys? Don?t be afraid to run! You are not a tank! I did have a few comments on improvements that could be made. First of all, there is a very conspicuous bug in which all the pre HotU wings on all the elves consistently faced south. This didn?t look very good if, say, the NPC was facing east. These wings also looked rather insanely large, and I?d encourage the author to modify the game and use the new HotU wings, as well as some of the additional wing variants provided by community hak?s (these allow various shades of bird-like wings, which would be important for one of the sidequests). Furthermore, in this vein, I had trouble with the succubus model being used as good faerae queen. I guess I?ve just seen that portrait and NPC model used so many times that it doesn?t allow me to easily see her as a good, non succubus creature. Besides, she just looks evil. :) My other main comment is that the main quest seemed completely unrelated to the reason that you came to the village to begin with. If you?re just a bard?s bard, someone who just likes to sing for folks, you?d be pretty inclined to quit the module without ever pursuing the larger quest. I think it?d be nicer if there?s a more direct link between the performance and the adventure that follows, even if it?s just an immediate appeal for help from the queen. All in all, this is a nice adventure, and is the only thing out there that is really designed from the bottom up for the bard class. Definitely a recommended play. -B 16 June '05 One additional comment for the author (major spoiler): * After you are captured, why on earth would you be permitted to keep your weapons? It would make a lot more sense for the PC to have to raid a storage room early in their escape. Furthermore, while I appreciated the idea of running from hordes of kobolds and the like, I found it a bit odd for there to be a huge collection of kobolds and bugbears just standing around weapons out. Some sort of alarm going off, and kobolds streaming down from a staircase or a rope or something would be nice. I also found it odd that once you jump the gorge, you?re essentially in the clear?no one else from that point on would know that you were escaping. It wasn?t a huge deal, but did require a little suspension of disbelief. _________________________ My NWN Blog FRW Character Creator

Cannot play this module. I wanted to play with Kira (female character from Dark Crystal). She was a Druid 1/Bard 4/RDD 2 (I needed the RDD thing for the wings but not anymore). I modifed her and made her Druid 1/Bard 5. I changed her to Druid 1/Bard 6 but I still get the same error message "The character does not meet the spell level requirement"??? The character is legal (created from lvl 1 and played from there) and the charcater does not have any wings. I not sure what the problem is. If you can enter the mod with a level 1 druid why can't you enter with a bard? Please help (I may still have 1-2 bards around that level but they are evil).

Nice, good-looking and -sounding module. With a low hack'n'slash quotient, it's just the thing for my lowish-level bard. The brevity simply means that there's an urge to play the sequel as well. :)

i liked the module till i got to the part where ya had to get to the kobolds cave to negotiate. clicked the door, talked, a kobold wizard comes from nowhere, think hes supposed to attack, he's neutral against me, like the other kobolds, and doesn't talk or attack or nothing. tried opening the door but nothing happens. help

Quite a fun little module. My bard/rogue worked out great for it as well, and the storyline was very entertaining.

Was enjoying the mod until I came back from the mines and realized I couldn't complete the fairy and the swordmans quests. Thats irritating. Another thing thats more entertaining than an actual problem is that the wings refuse to stay on the avariels' backs. That was probably created when NWN was updated as I'm running the most current version with both expansions and this mod was made for 1.32. Oh well. Maybe I'll start a new game a different day so I can finish those quests. Like I said I was enjoying the mod. I'm just too annoyed to continue now.
