Legacy: Dark Moon Rising - A prelude to a series of modules. A console style mod. You live with your family, in a small farming community where nothing much happens. The only difference today being is that it's the 10th anniversary of your brothers death. The nightmares have been getting more vivid as the anniversary has approached, and you have not been looking forward to this day. You just want to get it over with.... Notes: You must use the premade character to play (Connor Aylomen Lvl 1 Fighter). I strongly recommend you download the optional music: Legacy Music Pak 1 ---UPDATED 01/09/04------ See readme for details.

Great game..
the author clearly achieves what he sets to create. A module similar to rpg of the 90's and early 2000 (FF series, etc.)
Great music.

I initially played about half this module found it unplayable (they are two very difficult areas and the player must cross at least one to complete the main quest) stopped and made an initial not so good review. Luckily before posting I looked at the description above "a console style mod" with heavy hack and slash and little RP and decided to look at Doyleyboy's work once more.
The truth is, this could be called a "RP console mod".
Console because each area is more like a level of your favorite arcade game with enemies to kill or avoid and key places where you can rest or grab stuff. To help us the author included free respawn (I was rescued once by guards on the road after being knocked unconscious). Also, you have to really use the terrain features if not cheat. I mean Connor can get stuck but so are the animals. So in one of the very difficult area it was necessary to trick some animals and shoot them from a safe spot.
I did not think the module was that light on RP. We are not playing a generic fighter randomly dumped in a World going around killing goblins and looting everything in sight. We are not playing Aragorn in Middle Earth or Caramon Majere in Krynn. Instead we are playing Connor a farm boy who spent all his life around a village with his family or what is left of that. Sure we don't know his goals or motivations (beyond completing the main quest) but that's OK. Also I have seen a number of module really light on RP. Those with 2-3 NPCs with whom you can talk. It was really not the case here and even though they were very few options at least once it was possible to complete a quest by giving back a weapon or not. Several NPCs also had things to say like kids or drunk priest making the places visited more vivid. I also managed to remain and behave like a farm boy up to the end (e.g. I did not visit the merchants at all because it did not fit the story).
I find the start and end of the module fantastic and the middle part average.
Now for my revised score:
Gameplay: 5 - A few very difficult "levels" requiring cheating also it was easy to get stuck in trees
RP/Storytelling: 8 - RP was more than what I expected and the storytelling part was quite good.
Action: 6
Visuals: 8 - Nice except when you cannot see a thing
Sounds: 9 - Excellent music
Replayability: 3 - OK you can try fighter/ranger but that's about it
Polish: 8
Fun: 4
Note: Although quite different in gameplay the module have similarities with "Chronicles of Charnia" by slowdive_fan.

The tiles sets were beautifully done and the story was simple but engaging.

A very nice prologue for a larger story(I hope the series will be continued some time in the future) with magnificent area design and great use of haks (both music and visual haks). The storyline was simple but good (for a prologue) with some intriguing hooks to keep me wanting more. The combat challenge was decent but some more variety/uniqueness in enemies would have been nice though the twist in the last fight was a nice touch. Lastly there were some problems with scripts, especially camera scripts, which often got my camera stuck (glad about the tool to fix it :) ). All in all, this is a great mod that I recommend to any funs of 'console RPGs' or anyone else who doesn't mind some linearity in the story and dialogue.

Seeing as i never voted for this mod i guess i'll do so now (better late than never).
In case people are wondering why the high score, it's simple this is hardly the mod i've enjoyed much, sure you have to play a pre-rendered char, but it's well worth it...
But what captivated me the most were the use of placables (well done on that 1) and the music which i really liked.
I'll also use this chance to crongatulate DoleyBoy for this fine achivement ;)
@Steve, a module doesn't neccessarily have to be bad because it forces the player to play a pre-rendered char, look beyond that at the attention to detail the author had, the plot and the overall immersiveness of the module. _________________________ Don't do to a friend what you wouldn't want him to do to you.

The music was my favorite part. Too often that is overlooked as not as important, it really sets the mood. Graphics are really first rate too. Story is a bit linear, but fantastic mod. I anxiously await the next installment.

There it is! Allow me to be the first to congratulate you, Doyleyboy! :) Of all the NWN mods I've played, in terms of visuals, this one still takes the cake. :D

Well, i don't give you a ten because the mod was too short and you only had a chance to fight with animals (which i don't like)
:P. Anyway, it has the best visuals and audio, please finish the other quickly. _________________________ "I just love your pointy ears" Said the orc. "Really? I do like your large fangs" Replied the elf.
Well i'll be here waiting for your remake to come out as i extremely liked this 1 :)

A module eliminating magic automatically gets downscored, but finding out that I have to play with the supplied character means Hugie was right in his review: "Very linear; no roleplaying opportunities; in conversations, you have no choices as to what to say."
This is simply just an animated version of your story. If I want something linear, I will either read a book or watch a movie.
+1 for visuals (1 + 1 =2), but that is all. _________________________ Steve's Characters - please don't forget to vote on them if you play them.

What'll probably happen, as i suspect with alot of authors, is that im going to remake this module for nwn2 to get familiar with the toolset, then continue the series in that game. it just doesnt really make sense to spend months developing a module for such an aging game, when the sequel is potentially 4 months away. Well not to me anyway. plus ive got uni to finish, so even if nwn2 wasnt coming out, i wouldnt be mod making for a while. Hope that clears things up. _________________________ - Doyleyboy

Meh . . . I guess the failed efforts that others have mentioned already here just seemed to outweigh any of the adequate parts.

Although I appreciate the attempt, this mod is unplayable on a moderate system. Not to mention you can't even walk from one place to another because there's so much junk in the way... character hangs and bizarre camera actions abound. Just walking through a room is frustrating.
The protaganist's dialog suggests he is supposed to be a lay-about kid... why does he look like some aging death-metal star?
While the music is pleasant enough in general, the fight music sounds like a 70's action show reject theme. Also, why didn't you take the time to credit the composers?
I really tried to like it, but this mod is a perfect example of form over function... eye-candy 80% vs. gameplay and plot 20%

What a splendid visual experience, even if it makes the loading times take longer. Seriously, these are probably the best visuals I've seen in any NWN module. Oh yeah, and the gameplay is great too. ;) Seriously, the actual plot is a little weak, and most quests consist of odd jobs for various people, but the experience of traveling through such lush enviroments makes it all worth it--even if you are mostly just fighting animals.
On a side note, I am not religious and don't consider myself a prude, but I thought that song the choir boys were singing was quite inappropriate. Come on, they are little kids, and in a church no less.

Incredible Graphics, Incredible sound. Can't wait for the next installment. Loved the cutscenes!! May have to replay at least once more to hit spots I might have missed, and yes, the respawning did get a little annoying later, but overall a great piece of work!! thank you

Superb module! The visuals remind me greatly of Morrowind. Together with the music, even exploring is a blast! This mod really stands out from the crowd and leaves an impression and I've been playing mods since the game was first out so that's saying lots! Many times during gameplay I just stared in awe at the scenery and couldnt believe it's NWN.
The story is simple but I like the way you arrange it with both brothers suffering the same fate one in the beginning one in the end. That's really cool. I actually cried out loud when Connor finally realised what's wrong. Can't wait for the next installment and see what happens to the brothers!!
One little complaint is the spawns which keep coming. It gets annoying when one has to go back and forth. I probably killed the whole falcon species. Other than that, this mod deserves to be among the best so I give it a 10.
Thanks for the game and please release the next part soon!

Doyleboy, truly an excellent module. Fantastic use of tilesets and placables. Good story and belivable people. Interaction are a bit on the narrow side. But still, one of the best mods out there. Looking forward to the sequel. :)

Hi Doyleyboy,
Your module is really a stun for me. I have tried many mods before and this is the first time I don't feel "familiar" inside your mod. You have used the custom tileset very well. Although it push the limit of the engine and is a bit sluggish, this mod is a great one.
I love the music "Away in Zanarkand" from FFX. I also love the one used in beginning and the ending of the mod, it gives me a familiar feeling as those I have listened inside a great chinese RPG game series.
