Description
As a relatively inexperienced adventurer, it comes as a bit of a shock that Calum has sent for you. You cannot resist the call of this old friend, however... he saved your life many years ago, when you were hardly an adolescent. But he has become a Harper now, and seeks your help. Will you become a Harper? What destiny do you choose?

@Susan.
God Mode? Custom Level 7 Fighter with 40 AC? Did you play the same mod? Folks ignore that poster.
Play this mod with a brand new character, it is the best way to get ready for the Harper series and end up at appropriate level, with right gear/money.
I started with a new 1st level Rogue with standard leather armor and a shortsword and I didn't need God Mode once. Though I was eventually mostly Fighter/Paladin.
This Mod gives big rewards in both experience, and item drops. So it is a fun way to level and gear you up for the next installment. But it is much more enjoyable than I expected.
This Prelude is better put together than many mods with higher ratings. If you have an interest in the Harper series. Do not miss playing the prelude.

Okay, let's face it. This mod is a fun and fantastic (and by that, i mean un-realistic) way to level up. I was expecting it to be a waste of time; I almost debugged my character to the appropriate level and started the actual campaign, but i'm glad i didn't. The mod fleshes out the back-story and, despite the sometimes irksome combat difficulty, i found it all worthwhile.

The only way I could do this without having god-mode all the way was to use the character creating mods to build a lever 7 fighter with AC nearly 40.
It's a very good mod which is totally ruined by the impossible fights.
Could any kind soul take the time to tell me if it is AT ALL POSSIBLE to play this with an evil character? Or could the creator of this mod mind putting together a minor hak or something to enable us evil dudes to try this out?
I'm passing through a rather horrid drought of content and I just can't find any interesting campaigns to play, and I can't be arsed to bother with a Persistent World, as my job takes up most of my time.
The only character I can stand to play atm is a fun assassin build called the Shadow Blade, and the Original Campaign is frankly crap and not worth my time.

Harpers' Tale is the first custom mod I ever downloaded and is still my favorite. Good action and humor. HIGHLY recommended.

A mod of above average quality. But as for single player - some of the combat was too overpowered and i found it annoying to find 3 scrolls of call lightning , worth few thousand coins, on my first level. But in conclusion, apart the combat - everything's more or less fine

Ok, so I don't usually vote on series mods before I finish the whole set, but I am so impressed by this!
I was so happy to see someone who writes dialogue much the same way it sounds when I run it through my head.
From the opening cut scene... I was in love with the story and the style of story telling. The quick witted sarcasm was a total winner.
I loved the 'not-so-run-of-the-mill' Monsters, and truly loved the names of the goblin weapons!
It was always a nice suprise to back track a bit and find a new group of baddies waiting for me to smash!
The people seem more realistic to me and the areas are well designed.
On to part one... _________________________ Stupidity kills people.

Well.. it's a leveller upper, backstory teller. As such - it does it's work splendidly. Combining stuff to get other stuff and loads of XP was a great idea, much better than just slaying hoards of rats of kobolds.
I noticed too late the series was really intended for a heavy hacker slasher slayer type of a character. But decided to continue on with a Ranger/Rogue nevertheless.

This is what a mod should look like. It is stable, entertaining and rewards exploration. Great stuff!

Played through this module with a bard and it's been a blast! I also found the stag and other hidden(?) stuff. This is the first module that manages to keep my attention until the end, and I've already started up Escort Duty.
Great work, I was looking for some hack'n'slash and you served me copious amounts :) again, great work!

A good little mod to level up character pretty quickly. You have to work hard to reach 8th lvl and the dare I say monty haul of items, very important to equip yourself with for the dangers ahead. Finished as a 1/6/1 elf wiz/ftr/aa

The Harper's Tale was one of the first user-made campaigns I ever played, and is probably still my favorite.

never did find the stag. pretty good otherwise.

where's the stag? i'v searched that cave VERY thoroughly, cleared all hostiles (everyone here seems to be complaining that it respawns, but i'v not had one thing respawn all game), that door someone had trouble opening told me it looked odd in this setting, when i first found it, but opened without a problem. i searched the hell out of the tiny area behind it, but was nthing there except another regular ettercap, a phase spider, and a bit of rubble with a sharp rock in it. went back to the dead girl's father, hoping maybe i'd killed it and mistook it ofr another ettercap, made sure not to sell any ettercap parts til i'd done so, still said "no luck so far". does the stag even exist, or just a rumor the townsfolk came up with to explain away their losses?

Great Mod overall. I think the treasure are just a little too much. The fights are good and i really enjoy the 3rd quest. Good prelude. Gonna play the whole serie for sure. Good work Dave!!!

A really great series of adventures. I really liked the custom toys to play with especially the hot plate.

Found this to be most enjoyable and an excellent way to level my Ranger to level 8 (though I ended up with a Ranger/Fighter (6/2)). On to Chapter 1.

A late vote to a mod alread critically acclaimed in the Hall of Fame.
Some mods hold their own over time; and this is certainly one of them.
This mod amounts to a glorified "campaign prelude" and is advertised as such. In that respect it does a great job setting the stage with tactical combat, equipment drops, treasure, and items available for sale.
It levels the player up to level 8 without overly uber gear and monies. Providing a respectable balance to a mature adventurer. Some of the custom items and crafting choices are very nice such as Ettercap Arrows.
In all it is a satisfying way to play your PC up to that level without using a level up mod - all accomplished in 4 hours for the average 1st level PC.
I'm quite liking the mod so far; normally i avoid hack'n'Slash, but i thought I'd give it a go. I know this is just the prelude to several mods; just qwant to know if they are ALL going to be hack'n'slash or whether later ones will be more story-based? (I do have to admit that hack'n'slash can be quite therapeutic sometimes... ;)
The real problem I have is that basically, I'm stuck.
SPOILERS ALERT!!!
I'm doing the 3rd quest for Calum (MIssing Harpers) and have gone into the cave. Got to the gate near the two dead harpers and can't get through it. Have scoured the area for a key, no joy and can't bash the gate. Please tell me what i'm missing! My character is a female elven Clr7. Speaking of female, or not as the case may be, Little Jim called me Sir(!?). Is this deliberate, ie is it humour, or did you not tell him to differentiate? Just wondering...
END SPOILERS
If you'd prefer not to add more spoilers, please feel free to email me.
Overall, I'm enoying it; if I can just get past this gate...

I've played through this series I don't know how many times and never bothered to vote before (I'm a lurker in these parts, what can I say). And now I'm playing through again and finding that I really miss that Spoiler Readme for the Prelude. Parts One and Two (Escort and Hooknose) come with theirs, I can't recall part Three (salegunt) ever having one, but I swear that there used to be one for the Prelude and it doesn't seem to exist anymore. I don't "need" it. I just really really want it. SO if anyone finds the darned thing let me know?
In any case, these mods are tons of fun, and one of the few that I insist on playing from the beginning. Great work Dave, Jo Cool, Sidestep and everyone else involved.

I know it is not intented for multiplay, but the module is so good... I was playing with a friend and we could not enter in the mines. Can you help?

A good level up module. It did what it was designed to do. Players can start the series with a pre-fab character or a character from a leveler, but why not have some quick fun developing your character here instead? A good prequel to the series.

I played a paladin in this series and I didn't have any problems with this prelude module. I really enjoyed smashing goblins, and the monetary gain was nice as well. Overall I thought this was a fun little module to play and get my character ready for the real thing. _________________________ Romance Modules List | Male Human Portrait | Anera Modified Portrait | Artwork | Voice Samples
