Description
This module takes off where Chapter 1 ended. It is _highly_ recommended to play Chapter 1 first, in case you haven't. The story so far (small spoilers from Chapter 1): You managed to escape the prison where you have been wrongfully incarcerated. Under way, you also freed a young elven maiden named Alanya from the prison, who was locked up for ten years without any obvious reason - and has become your companion since then. You and Alanya made your escape and finally met Count Lyonard, an important figure of the Arborilian Resistance Movement fighting the Lord's Council which is currently oppressing the people of Arboril. You performed a mission for him, but now you are wanted by the Arborilian military more then ever. Count Lyonard has then sent you to seek out the wizard Gorian who is living the small town of Whitecoast.

The module would probably be worth about a 9.25 (decent story, nice time-travel bit, H&S is heavy but does not get too tedious as in later parts of the series) if not for one area: the huge maze in the crypt that you have to navigate to get the orb to free the Lich's wife. It's excessively large and packed with monsters starting at "Challenging". Some even respawn. I finally got fed up with it, retreated back to the start, had Alanya cast Invisibility on me and just ran through it to get it over with. It's the first sign of the author's tendency to just throw more & more monsters at the player instead of thinking up original encounters.

My rating for the second of the "Lords of Darkness". Awesome job all in all, but the weakest part in the series in my opinion. Still, the action is there, and I liked the story twist. Area design was lacking in that I really hate those areas that wind up with far a few between means to get to higher levels, meaning you have to walk throuth the same screens over and over. Spoiler: Collecting the three parts for the time streamer device invoked mixed feelings within me. The part breaks with the fast, linear pace of the series, yet has a very heartwarming subplot... All in all, it makes the module seem less than hatched from one egg, so I will rate it lowest of the series. But this is just a minor design flaw overall.

Play as you go comment... have played thru Chap I and II now, and I am SO impressed with everything so far, I don't even know where to begin. Story 10; Combat / interesting monsters / hack&slash 10; fun factor 10. Oh, and everybody's usual favorite slam - too much high powered loot too early - doesn't happen here. I feel there is great balance. I am now a Rougue 7, Fighter 2, Champion of Torm 2 (maybe a wierd combo, but I wanted to see where it all is going to go. Saved in the house ready to begin Chap III. Can't wait :-) Dave

excellent continuation of the saga, the plotline and the deployment of the relation with the henchwoman are superb.

Great mod and series! Story and action packed with originality galore. It also has heart, and that is very elusive but very precious when you find it. Thank you, Fantus. (sorry about the typos in my comment on your third mod..I finished the series very late at night on the east coast of America, but had to comment on how much I enjoyed them...) _________________________ "The Large Print Giveth and The Small Print Taketh Away." I really enjoyed this module, and the whole series. The characters seem very real and 3 dimensional. Even the side quests have excellent characters. The undead nobleman who finally realizes the wrongs he has committed and makes a great sacrifice for another is probably my favorite.

The story is awesome, but some of the combat is just aggravating (Alanya running into the middle of a mob and casting for example). I had to give her a bow and tell her to stay far back since she didn't listen when I told her not to cast spells!

As Berliad said before, this mod is a wonderful one. - I like the twist about travel forward in time and the PC has to find out a way back to their time. The ruined town is cleverly designed that I even don't recognize it at first as the original town. This is a shock that just ambition and lust for power of several people could push the races into extinction... - The betrayal, hatred and love between Dordonir and Callia is rather touching. - Near the encampment of the general, there is no map pins to indicate the path towards the base of Lady Tarleth. I have to search for it throughout the whole area. - The battle with a whole army of the undead with the help of rebel spell casters is a great idea. However, it seems that after the battle they don't follow our party to combat with the Lady. _________________________ Overlooked Module Report February 2009 | Master List | Forum Thread Academy of Modding Excellence Romance Module List Horror Module Collection Starlight's favorite module list
