awesome module, infortunately my character was too high level (31 at start) but I really enjoyed myself although I'am not really into secret doors and catacombs ...
there is a way to go back up the pit which drops down from the Chapel of Evil. If you clicked on the hole which leads down (you had to, as there is no other way down into the pit), you might have noticed an option to drop a rope down the pit. If you didn't do that, and just dropped down without any forsight as to how you might get out, I can't help you with that one. ;p
if you search the laboratory completely, you'll find a Unique Power item named 'A Jar of Greasy Jelly'. If you use this item on yourself, it allows you a 100% chance to gather the other half of the First Key from the Vat. Thus, allowing you entry into the True Crypt, without having to cheat.
You have a base 10% chance to find the second half of the First Key each time you reach into the Vat and take damage without using the Greasy Jelly. Thus, this is likely the reason you couldn't find the second half of the First Key.

I play this story with my Ranger 38 who gains 1 level. The advice of Steve was not good for me because the challenge was not there :( No encounter afraid me, even not Acererak. I died yes but only by killing scripts. And in solo I had to attack Acererak at range not to be imprisonned (lethal action in solo).
Good mod with care of details. There are some bugs and one is lethal. The dialog of the second pool in the laboratory breaks and there is no way to obtain the key. I had to load in DM mode to unlock the door.
There is also no way to exit because we can't go up in the pit.
Updated the package with the most recent version of Tomb of Horrors, modified to support newest 3.5 edition.

Fixed bug where was not working right with arcane archer imbue arrow and alignment restricted casting.

Fixed hak packs not showing up on this page. Updated module to newest Ghool version (changed some secret door DCs). Included scripts that were modified in case you're interested.
