B2 - The Keep on the Borderlands is one of the most classic adventures. The P&P version was made by Gary Gygax in the 1980:s. The author Steve then made this module and published it a couple of years ago. I found it to my liking and decided to improve a number of things.

I have so much fun playing these... I played both of these back in the early days and there just as I remember them with a few changes of course we changed a few things playing this module ourselves... Its no fun if you know the outcome! I wish you still did these! Thanks!

Enjoyed it, thanks for the donation to the community. This was and is still my favorite PnP game and I like the conversion here.

It's always a treat to see PnP adventures turned into modules. So I was looking forward to checking out this one. I'll start with the good.
Great job with the caves - tables, chairs, cabinets, bedrolls, and garbage gave it a real "lived in" feel. And the doors just added to that (made it feel even more like a monster's "home"). Plus, the trap at the entrance of the Kobold's cave? Excellent. The dead ends were nice as well - not every corridor in a 'dug out' cave system needs to lead to a room.
Now the bad...
monsters just milling about in "fireball formation" in the various rooms.
the various monster leaders: a Hobgoblin & Goblin chief sharing a cavern complex? huh. Where was the Orc chief? And the Kobold leader... is that a Bugbear model?
a trapped crate? How come none of the chests were trapped? More traps at entrances and doors to store rooms would have added to the "lived in" feel.
the Chaos Temple
unused doors in the keep that can be picked open.
you can't enter the merchant warehouse as soon as you pick the lock.
in the temple, typos abound and the crypt guards actually chase after you to tell you not to mess around in the crypts.
poor dialog interaction with NPCs
poor monster/treasure ratio
As soon as I found the "unused doors" that I could open, I nearly quit out and deleted the mod. But, I decided to wait and see the monster caves - glad I did. The caves with their inhabitants felt natural, and are the only saving grace in this module. I'm sorry to say that this was not a well done translation of B2. _________________________ `

(continued from below) Of those caves that were included, anyway. Half of the Caves of Chaos aren't in the mod, nor are the other outdoor encounters or the feeling of exploring the wilds. I'd say this conversion mod represents about 40% of what's in the original, at most. _________________________ X-INV X-COM War of the Worlds Lantan University

For no apparent reason, the original map of the keep itself was not followed at all, nor was the winding road through the hills for its approach. I saw this as a missed opportunity. Another missed opportunity was failing to include the original narration, and the interaction with the Castellan. I ran this mod for a group on NWC, and I found myself entering the toolkit and adding things often, like the Keep interior, and many missing NPC's. By the end I felt like I should have just built my own from scratch. It's incomplete at best, really more of a beta, with unnecessary changes from the original. The caves were decently presented. _________________________ X-INV X-COM War of the Worlds Lantan University

A very nice, quick, fun introduction to D&D, just like the original.

Nice little module. I tend to prefer modules created from PNP. They brink back good memories.
This module was a bit difficult in the early going. I played as a Female Human Paladin.
**Spoilers**
I had a hard time equipping myself at the beginning, but eventually I ended up with a well equipped character.
The crypts and the caves were all well designed. The shaman were a bit tough, but I managed to complete the whole thing.
From what I recall, this is pretty faithful to the PnP module, and the combat was challenging, but the module just didn't hold my interest, and so I didn't finish it.
Flufball,
The party gets the reward and any xp for finishing the quest. But, unfortunaltely only the speaker will get to the next dialouge alternative. You may still play the module by having a party leader managing all quest related dialouge or download the latest B2 & B3 Combo where most such issues have been removed. _________________________ Intelligence - The ability to plan ahead.

Nice little module for bringing up Level 1 characters.
Module version 1.3 uploaded. Resting is now unlimited as far as you have iron rations in your equipment.

Well met adventurer. Thy concerns are valid. The resting restriction is a bit harsher to wizards than to fighter types. I will change that rule and reupload.
I download the module, remembering with fondness playing B@ with friends when I first started AD&D.
Tried to play the mod today and encountered a bug which caused me to exit the module without saving.
Playing a level 1 Wizard solo.. managed to reach level 2 in the goblin caves.. opened the door with the goblin leader who quickly tore through my familliar and my summoned animal.. fine.. chopped me down as would be expected.. frustrating but fine. Respawned just fine in the temple.
Ran back out of town and tried to rest to regain spells and it kept cancelling rest, even though I had 5 rations on me at the time.. no enemies in sight.
Cant play awizard without spells.. so I simply exited out.
I wont post arating because I believe you will address this problem and it would be unfair to you to vote at this time.
I will try the module again once its updated with a fix for this issue.
Peace

I can´t say how close this module is to ShadeRavens version. His version is not a duplication of the original but rather his own version based on that story. This version is rather close to the original. I can't really say how close to the original as I ain´t the original creator and I haven´t got the p&p module to compare to, but it has got rather good votes so far.
By the way, you aren't the original module creator Steve are you?
Flufball,
I experienced something similar a few days ago while playing in multiplayer. It seems like only one PC in the party can get the reward. This is rather irritating. I shall se what can be done.

The game worked fine up until the when I tried to complete the Wizard quest and the Merchant quest... I can't seem to be able to complete them in multiplayer even with the required items in hand. Any ideas?

Tim - great mod and great update. Your work is excellent. Your use of basic NWN/SOU/Hotu in these mods encouraged timid newbies(like me) to try it.
Please add a henchman for solo play as wizard/sorcerer.
I have considered joining the modules or just play them in order. Your idéa about adding Quests to the Curate is a good one. You are also correct in me being inactive for a while. A little child and a job takes it´s toll on spare time.

Hi Tim
I voted and added comments for B2/B3 and H4 - well done!
I think you might be inactive at the moment but have you considered linking B2 and B3 into a mini campaign? Add a script at the end of B2 from the Curate to lead you into B3 and then back to the Curate from B3 for a little more quest exp (i.e. having completed them both).
I ran an elf ranger/dwarf warrior/human sorcerer thru each solo (B2 was tough on the sorcerer without a henchie) I ended up level 4 (almost 5)/4 (just over 4)/and 5 (almost 6) respectively. I think this would be a great level 1 - 5 mod series with the loop back thread an a bit of exp to "give level at the very end"

***** Spoiler Alert ********
Wife and I just finished the module (we think) ... had a great time... After the Hermit, Merchant, and Evil Priest quests are we done?

So far this has been the best interpretation of the classic module that I have played from the vault.
No, it's ment for level 1-3 characters or perhaps a level 4 wizard in singleplayer. _________________________ Intelligence - The ability to plan ahead.

Keep on the Border Lands isn't supposed to be some Uber high level game.

very well done, only minor sound glitches noticed (no weapon hit sound while attacking evil acolytes and adepts). Solo fully playable.
No plans for CEP at present. I also hope that this module is true to the original.Tim _________________________ Intelligence - The ability to plan ahead.

Well Tim, the suggestions I have is the same as we talked about earlier on the email, when I mailed them to you. But maybe you dont recognize me as J_L_Seagull, rather as Fonzo (lost the account). So if you do some fast paced action with a good storyline as we talked about, I would be happy as a clam *smiles* The vault really needs some good high level single play adventures. By the way, does anyone have a a suggestion on a module for a lvl 30+ character?
