the HeX coda 01 (v1.3)
A Scifi/Fantasy Adventure for NWN by Stefan Gagne.
...modern civilization is one of prosperity and safety, with all magic legally controlled by a monolithic business called the Cathedral Corporation. As part of the underground magic movement known as the Hex Coders, every day is a race to develop new arcane technologies and evade persecution by the Cathedral. That alone would be trouble enough, but add the sins of an ancient civilization rising in the present day and you've got more than your fair share of problems. Can you lead the team through this interlocking puzzle across time and space, and avoid getting twenty to life for unauthorized use of magic..? (Version 1.0)

This is not just a module, it is art.
Issues:
- "disparate" and "i'm" typos in the recognizer conversation
- my game crashed few times in the shattered hourglass area and Kronos mind area _________________________ Thanks Rolo:)

I registered here just to give it a solid 10.
A very unique and interesting NWN experience - well, actually not NWN, but something on its very own.
It's hard to say what I liked most.
Well, first of all - music. It is really a big part of the atmosphere, so I was a little disappointed when in some places there were default NWN bgm's - not because they're bad, but
because this module gives a unique feel by music.
Characters - that's how you gotta do it. Personalities, smart dialogues, feelings, disagreements. But most of all - the best chaotic neutral character of all I ever seen in games. Actually I don't remember others at all, that can fit this alignment even a bit close like that one. Yes, Pandy. Truly magnificent dialogues. I quickly understood that I simply can't go without her anywhere, I needed her comments and personality perspective - not crazy at all, just different. That's actually it - when someone makes chaotic characters they either just try to be plain crazy (which is too simple and boring/annoying) or they are kinda.. normal. Pandy is not crazy, nor normal, nor she resembles anyone else. (Well, actually she gave me a tiny bit of reminding of Imoen from protagonist's dreams in Baldur's Gate 2)
And yeah, I too was always afraid that this module "will end after this point and say wait for the part 2, oh nooo", but no it didn't, it didn't and again it didn't, it continued to develop this awesome plot and actually had an ending, opened to sequels, but a real ending.
Humor, very interesting language and references - yeah it got that too. But frankly when I really laughed most was when I read the dialogues with two "drow". `DOOM!`
Technical stuff - fighting styles, of course. I used two katanas in assassin mode - well how could I resist? But another minor minus - when Pandy (and others too I can presume) got a levelup she started using a default NWN animation. Handy tools like tracking relationships and fashionista - oh my, an NWN module that almost immediately gives you freedom to change design (well that I could anyway, but with some money and skill/luck though) and coloring (yes! my leather armor looked awesome) of armor and clothing. An old motto "By Gamers For Gamers" fits here very well.
Yes, combat could've been a lot more challenging, but this module is not about combat. On the other hand it gives you possibility to play with absolutely any character, which can be more roleplay-oriented.
Overall - if a game truly gives you a feel of its world, setting, if you believe in characters like persons, not some NPC's, if it also gives you a feeling of great respect to author(s) - well, then you've played something really good. At least if it dares to call itself RPG.
Of course I would very much like that it would be a big and very non-linear game.. Also with much more hacking/coding stuff since they are Hex _Coders_. Even for characters without computer skills - you either can take Pandy or get workarounds (possibly with brute force). Because despite all the fantasy and steampunk - it gave a cyberpunk feel a lot.

Remains one of the most innovative and interesting modules out there.

I've played my fair share of modules, some of them bland, some of them good, a few of them awesome, but I've never been so enthralled by an NWN module. Not only are the NPCs with well-built personalities, but if they were real people I'd WANT to get to KNOW them better. This and my points from the previous post overshadow whatever imperfections someone with higher requirements from a module may have. Thank you for this work of art, Stefan Gagne.

I heartily approve of the humor and the setting of the module. Loved the jab at EA in the cubicle station, as well as the motivational posters in the corridors :D Vote to come when I finish playing it.

Can't believe I didn't vote when I first finished it. Absolutely brilliant module, with some interesting mechanics.

Excellent mod! Probably the best I've played, with a very original storyline.

VERY imaginative module with a great story -- it's a shame that the whole thing wasn't completed (although you can read about how the sequel was supposed to end).

An absolute marvel, I simply can't put all my thoughts about Stefan's modules in one review. It is amazing how using so little tools he creates new games. The only complain is that they have low replayability, as most of the locations are a must for driving story forward, but it is somewhat normal for such a touching stories..

this was truly amazing and I enyojd every minute of it.
If one module deserves to be played to experiment what NWN is capable of, NWN beyond NWN, it's definitely the HeX coda 01.
Think about NWN as a toll, a pencil.
When I finished Part 1, I had the same exact feeling than after reading a book.
But a good one.
And it took me a good while to get back here.
I haven't played part 02 yet, as I still need a huge breather.
I always loved when modules from any game weren't exactly playing by the original game. But using it, squeezing it, to get something else out of it. All of it. Not only past but also future. The HeX coda 01 is to me the best example of it. When the past becomes the future of your very present.
Words are amazing, imagination climaxes all over, music keeps telling you you're just about to die to the point you might even wish it.
Play it. Also because, beside everything else, which is already all, its one of the funniest I have ever played.
I laughed, even better, smiled all the way, and I dont do so so easy.
... Like if Stefan Gagne still had some room left to do something else even.
One piece of advice on the player side, try keeping your henchies around...
Marvellous job.

- Pandy doesn't fight anymore. She freezes into her " special" fighting style, and just wait.
- And Six doesn't want to joign the party, saying it's already too crowded. She would be number 6 actually. Is there a limit? _________________________ @ + jml, level 52

This is an excellent mod truly wonderful. It's a tragedy if it's never to be finished but I understand if you want to get on to other things. Things happen and get the best of us at times. _________________________ Dying's easy Living's hard

Loved it. I don't normally like parodies, but this one worked. Unusually interesting henchmen, well-written story... deserves a 10 if anything does.

Long time fan of the Penultima and Eternum series, I was quite eager to try out Hex Coda... but took quite a while to find myself in the right mood.
It happened a few days ago and what a great way to get back (once again) into NWN. While part of a series, this module felt to me like a thoroughly complete one and I actually kept thinking "oh, sad, the aventure must be over after this sequence"... and it proved me wrong at least three times. It's incredible how much high quality content you have put in there!
I loved the characters, the humor and parody elements, all the details in dialogues and items and the overall growing epic feel. I'm already eager to go back into it with another class, trying to get a new "duo" and try out some things differently, but I'll wait, to get a renewed discovery of the module a few months from now.
All in all, yet another Stefan Gagne adventure to put among my favorite modules for NWN!

This module is simply amazing! The best one I've ever played! The characters were well developed, and I like how you developed the PC. The storyline was my favorite part, along with the stunning music. It actually made me feel like I was reading an old sci-fi book. The custom content (especially the posters) were awesome. I really like how you developed the characters, (especially Six, who was my favorite) and showed their different personalities. I am going to play the second one, and from reading other peoples' comments, am a little sad because it's unfinished

A fantastic module. Seems to pay homage to FF7 & Chrono Trigger without letting the similarites get in the way of the story. Shame the series will remain unmade. _________________________ -=Jaysyn=-

Everyone should play this module. It's better than 99% of commercial RPGs.
Beyond being awesome in every respect, the module is also hilarious. It felt like one big spoof of Final Fantasy which, of course, only added to the humor.

The Story was finish somewhere... I am sure you can find it in here just look around.
If I am not mistaken the work ended because the engine couldn't keep up with Stefan's imagination (does he blow up the planet at the end? oh something like that)
Anyways... I love this module and the unfinished second one and read the story... It was a great story :)

I just finished the mod last night, and I must say I'm disappointed...
...THAT YOU DECIDED NOT TO FINISH THE SERIES!!!
I for one, would love to see more Hex Coda modules. Your sense of humor is second-to-none, and the story itself was absolutely gripping. Please, finish the series! Even if that means you write the story and leave the actual module development to someone else, please finish it! _________________________ DO NOT MEDDLE IN THE AFFAIRS OF DRAGONS...

I played this a couple of years ago, and it still stands out in my memory as one of the more unique modules. Great NPCs, Great environment.
Simply one of the best.

Like all of Stefan's work, strong on story and (especially in this case) henchman interaction and background. Excellent use of custom content (also as usual). The stock tilesets are starting to look more than a bit old, the only design negative. Some design elements also felt a bit recycled from his other works, but there's enough that's new and the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Also have to commend the author for the quantity of content, which does not disappoint.
Well worth playing as an intro to the second module, which although unfinished I believe is more compelling. That and the full storyline included with it (so you know how things end) make this mod worth the time. I hadn't played before now due to the abandoned follow-on, but the overall experience is still worth it.
Thanks again for your contribution to the community.

I never imagined Id see a sci-fi game in NWN and this is a great one. An amazingly creative and fun game, with some great original content, well developed henchmen and a very well crafted plot. Brilliant.
