Back when this was released I was merely a teenager without any disposable income or means to purchase these modules. Since then Bioware has ceased their NWN support, the modules cannot as far as I know be purchased any longer, even the old homepages for Neverwinter Nights and the forums are gone from Bioware's sites these days. It was only due to me finding these modules adrift in the sea of P2P that I managed plunder me a means to play this adventure. It is to my knowledge the only remaining way to play these modules. The authentication server still responds, but I do not know for how long still.
The creators still work at Bioware but DLA doesn't exist anymore. The Module itself is quite fun. A bit heavy-handed in Pirate themes, drawing a lot of inspiration from the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It has good action, good puzzles, a lot of wonderful custom items, beautiful new tile-set and new creatures. The focus has been on creating a working pirate setting more than an accurate Faehrunian setting. The setting works if you don't mind a bit of silliness and lightheartedness. Story however comes second, it's robust enough to carry the adventure to the end but then it sort of falls on the finishing-line, not entirely unlike the ending of Mass Effect 3 which hit the world a month ago at this time of writing. The last hour or so will take the plot in a direction not quite where you would expect and your character will end up in state ill-befitting for export to other modules. I thought myself that I would be able to roam the seas a bit more as captain or crew-member of a vessel but it was not to be. When we set sail after the villains I thought half of the adventure remained. In the end, it was a fun module, but don't expect yourself to be greatly involved in the story and expect the final sequence to just fade to black because that's what it will do.
Verdict: Play it if you haven't, while the authentication server still runs.
ps. It's ironic isn't it? The only way to play a module about pirates is to pirate it. _________________________
They took the download of the module down so this is now essentially just a reminder of something some people missed out on.

Had a lot of fun with this. Right now is a good time for people to try it...
It's too bad that there wasn't a chance to help the dragon more at the end. I felt bad for it...

A lot of good things in this module. The quest, parrot, story, themed items, some battles with unlimited foes, scaled encounters, henchmen banter.
But sadly it's the bugs that stuck with me.
- henchmen randomly unequip the shields I gave them
- henchmen randomly stop attacking in combat
- henchmen constantly attack everything is sight especially if not set to defensive (spam follow, henchai doesn't work)
- henchmen spellcasting class gets lagged behind even though they're set to balance
- the sorcerer casts spells in melee and gets himself killed by attacks of opportunity
- the character does not get automatically exported
- there are not cloth dyes to buy
- with a high appraise skill lots of vendors can sell cheaper than they buy
I started with a new character at level 5 and finished around 16. The monk had it easy.
I'm interested in ordering the mod, but the *bleep*-heads at Bioware have made their site impossible to navigate, while support isn't answering questions. It must be nice to be paid without having to do any work! How do I order the mod?

A fun premium mod. I liked it better than any other premium mod. A high magic, low cash adventure with a fun setting and a light-hearted attitude. Well designed and implemented. Nothing earth-shattering, but still very enjoyable, and well worth a play.
I hope people can get this module packaged with some later edition of the game on disc (I have no idea). That's because these premium modules are no longer available for download. And if you already have it, you'd better play it ASAP. You never know when they will shut down the authentication server. Kind of a drag that they require you to authenticate over the internet EVERY time you load a save game.
>
I liked the pirate setting, and the plot was interesting enough. The part where you are stranded on an island with no equipment was very interesting and fun. (Although it required some careful planning on the part of the player -- that jaguar definitely would have killed me if I had not gotten him stuck under a cliff.)
I played a 5th level rogue (minimum recommended) and had a VERY tough time of it. Even with 2 henchmen, defeating the pirate undead under the lighthouse simply would not have been possible. Luckily, the item I needed was in a chest, so I just used stealth to sneak in and grab it. But I really could have used the XP. Probably best to take a character of 7-8 lvl, 6 if you are a veteran player. However, I suspect many of the encounters scale to your level anyway, so that may not help as much as one might thinks. This module will be challenging, maybe too challenging for some.
Attention all players: KEEP YOUR HOMEMADE TORCH FROM THE ISLAND! Otherwise, ochre jellies are literally impossible to kill. The homemade torch will defeat them, but normal torches do nothing, and wepaons basically can't hurt them at all. My rogue and 2 henchmen (all lvl 10 I think), two armed with maces and one armed with a +3 staff against jellies could NOT kill even one of the smallest parts of an ochre jelly after it split. I guess they made these a lot harder for the island section of the game, and then forgot that one of these appears at a prominent location later in the game. (If you get stuck, don't forget that you can trap a jelly behind a closed door due to its low intelligence. Annoying and ridiculous, but it works.)
Another problem I had is that if the authentication is slow, you can EASILY end up with a corrupted save game. Happened to me at least 5 times. Make a quicksave, a backup, and another backup every few hours to prevent this. Just one more reason to despise the authentication that was tacked on by the publisher.
Overall, the module is a most decent romp, and quite well done all around. The other hassles like the authentication only detract slightly from an otherwise excellent adventure. Anyone who enjoys NWN should play this one at least once if you possibly can. _________________________ - Invisig0th

Temporary Vote due to game extreme difficulty (game balance) and/or broken script.
May be this module is simply broken and therefore unplayable. I have already spent hours trying to clear the dock district and reloaded 10 times probably. I guess that the street fight was designed in such a way that it can go on forever until the boss or bosses are all dead. If this is the case I would assume that the AI should spawn the same number of sailors and pirates minus 2 to make things even. This is not what I see at all. We are fighting 1-2, 1-3 or sometimes 1-4. Now if this is some console game so be it. But this a module for a RPG game and I assume it was not made only for powergamers. Fight-Run-Rest (or "fight-die-respawn"), repeat 20 or 50 times. Which part of this is RPG? So either Premium Modules should be made for all players or if they are restricted to a certain gaming style Bioware should let us know upfront. Not the first time I see this, look at Kingmaker that cannot be completed with a "Mage" how could this have been overlooked is beyond me.

Can not believe that nobody has tried to help barefoot below. It has been nearly a year? Other author's providing free modules will generally help within a day.
Anyway barefoot if you are reading this.
Click on pirates.html (in files) above.
Type in username and password and click on downloads.
All I did was click on pirates download and clicked on run and there we are.
I even clicked on installer.exe (1 mb) below main file and I believe I had then downloaded game twice but it runs smoothly.
I played this a year or two when it came out and thought I would do so again. However, after going through the authentication routine, answering the "premade" question and it starts to unpack it then gives me the message about failing the authentication or a corrupted file. Any idea how I can get around this? I don't really want to buy it again.

Out of the premium mods, I like this and Wyvern Crown the best.
Had a few problems with the mod, but overall it was alright.
- Sound effects and ambiance continually interfered with the voice overs, I could barely hear the narrator and missed the ending because of this.
- I regret making a Bard/Harper for this. Bad decision on my part...
- I despise being railroaded into an incredibly obvious trap. The character that helps you leave Spindrift... my god. I don't believe that could have been done any worse.

This is the first premium module I've tried out.
*spoilers*
Generally, I had fun with it. The whole pirate setting is something I've always wanted to see more of in the RPG world (would love a Pirates! that also incorporated strong roleplaying), so that was fun to see. The atmosphere was pretty well done, and the over-the-top voiceacting for Captain certainly sets the mood.
I liked the numerous skill checks here and there in the module though, like it is in most games/mods, they sometimes just feel to much like a magical key to the dialogue. Sometimes I find the actual dialogue choices you get to be really outrageous, and something that (IMO) not even a high Diplomacy (or whatever skill it happens to be) skill should succeed with.
Nevertheless, it was great to have so many options to choose from here and there.
One of the biggest problems with the module is after you get to the town after being marooned on the island. Like someone mentioned, at that point in the game, I just didn't feel like my character had all that much motivation to pursue the "bad guy" for some reason. Even though she did terrible things, I felt that my character would more likely search for new adventures/start a new life rather than going after the bad guy. I also found her to be a very weird character, and very very inconsistant.
And I liked Polly quite a lot, hehe.
The best part of the mod is when you're marooned on the island. Excellent use of the audio and visuals here, it really gave the feeling of a tropical island despite the now primitive graphics of NWN1. Shows that you don't need fancy graphics at all to convey an atmosphere to the player.
So all in all, pretty good but not excellent. I would've rather seen what happened after this game. Having the chance of roleplaying a coldhearted pirate would've been excellent I think.

I played most of this module some time ago, and I must say that I found it the most entertaining of the premium modules at that time (pre - Infinite Dungeons). There were some good ideas and some fun situations in it, but I also got quite a lot of frustration, though that was like my fault for playing a monk! Though good, for some reason it just was not constantly entertaining and being short of time I never got the will to finish it. Definitely worth the money though if your time is not quite so precious, and one of the better modules I have played. _________________________ Works of B G P Hughes: Link

Bought this game a long time back but due to house moves etc had to wait a long time to play it.
I would not start this game by creating a new character as you will end up being 5th lvl. From my xp of boss encounters in docks I think you'll be dead quick.
Anyway played as single player 3/1/5 rg/ftr/clr and had prob with barb/sor. You give him armour arcane spell failure but I could not figure out what spells he was casting.
So I had enough of this and restarted this time used character on a level up mod, asked to be levelled to 9th and saved character (I was given about 36k in gp, when I had checked out other 8-10th llv characters I felt they were a bit too uber, the challenge of buying new stuff I enjoy). Entered pirates waited for intro to end then spoke to barb and asked him to only level up as barbarian AND then I levelled up hopefully you are getting this. So my character was now accompanied by a 9th lvl Barb. And then the option between which of the sailor gangs you were going to help. It would have been nice for somebody to mention the safehouse.
Tried both options better equipment in one, more xp in other.
I thought the marooned on the island was one of the best (You sit back and wish you had now gone down as a monk).
When I meet up with barb again he is now a barb/sorc combo. The thing which surprised me here is when he did cast fireball into combats none of us were ever damaged (hardcore?).
Where it goes downhill was the finale with the priests. The temple of Umberlee could have been a lot bigger/better. The combats and then off to the nearest inn for some rum end game. Finished as a 3/4/12 rg/ftr/clr (trickery and magic domains).
Will most definitely buy Knights of Cormyr.
Thanks to y'all

Mirgalen - AL3 was almost exclusively my own module and had very little BioWare input other than scripting systems.
Thanks,
Alazander.

Mirgalen - A few points:
* There is a decisive conclusion to the gang war, and you are able to choose which side you wish to help/oppose.
* While Barbarian/ Sorcerer may not be an optimum design, it is legitimate. And there is a mod help by Vulcano to add if you wish to alter things a bit, but I prefer to work as is.
* I have played using several classes, and manage to have enough proper gear for each. And some treasure drops scale to higher lvls, as do some encounters. The tougest time I had with doing this was while using an Epic Monk. Who would have guessed?
* Skill use is supposed to be a bit of a surprise. But there is plenty of info available to aid players in skill selection on the Official forums, as well as here. There is also spell interaction I believe, but have not used myself.

Not impressed so far.
I have rather low expectations when it comes to Bioware modules. IMHO Bioware is very good at making games (NWN is certainly one of the best game of all time) but is releasing average modules at most (AL3 is probably the exception).
So here we are wandering around the docks but hey what is going on? Endless fight? Again, bioware is making straigth forward modules, like kill every hostiles in the area, gather plot items and move on but in this case I am really not sure if we should stay and help or run away.
Also as already mentioned stop the useless henchmen thing, barbarian/sorcerer is not a good class mix for a NPC (a talented player could certainly do interesting things with the class mix). Thanks for the uniform but unless the following encounter is watered down to take into account that we are wearing plain clothes I don't see how a non mage is going to handle the fights(s) without a proper set of armor/shield and weapons. Last but not least, it is nice to have skill checks in conversation but we don't always know what skill is used and worse we cannot look at character sheet to pick the best approach (e.g. if I have 14 persuade and 12 intimidate I will try persaude first and intimidate next).
Perhaps I am going to restart the game, fire (or kill) the henchmen, equip all the best items I have and go to "clean" the docks.

I had a lot of fun playing this module. The story had it's twists and turns. The henchmen were fairly rote with an interesting wrinkle here and there. The parrot was the highlight.

Much better than I could do! I loved the mod, but there are a few things I didn't like: (1) every merchant has seemingly every item, every time; (2) treasure maps don't work unless you're really careful which PC you use. Otherwise, quite amazing!

It is definitely worth the money. A very nice mix of adventure and role-playing, filled with interesting environments and colorful characters, including some good henchmen (at least I had no problem with them). If there was any romance it was very well hidden, but the story was engaging enough as it is, what with all the changes my character experienced. It is all very nicely done, from the area design to the excellent voice acting. But I have to agree the ending needed to be much better it really feels like a poor way to finish the whole experience the writer should have looked at some of the Vault modules to see how it is supposed to be done.
Not a major problem though I would still buy a sequel, and since they are doing Premium Modules again lets hope they decide it might be a good idea to revisit this one.
