Description
You are Aralia's last hope! With a harsh winter bearing down on the small alpine village, its lifeline to the outside world -- the Pass of Shanafria, the Mountain of Mirrors -- is cut off by forces unknown. The village elders have selected you to climb to the high mountain pass, put a stop to whatever malevolent forces are at work, and reopen the vital link to the Land Beyond the Mountains before it is too late.
This module is based on Rose Estes' 1982 Endless Quest Adventure book "EQ2 - Mountain of Mirrors." The Endless Quest books were choose-your-own-adventure type books published by TSR to draw young readers into D&D. Some parts are true to the book, but much has been added. The Readme file is for players looking for a little guidance, or some info on the source material -- it is entirely optional and you should have no trouble playing the mod without it.
UPDATES - There will be no more updates to this mod and, since it has been a long time since I've received any bug reports, I am no longer going to support it. I hereby give my permission should any builder wish to use this mod or any part of it as part of another work. Furthermore, if the mod becomes "broken" through future patches and someone wishes to update it so that it works again, they may also feel free to do so. I only ask that I be given credit as the original author.
If you enjoy this mod, please give my other mod a try: BLACK THORN, a Forgotten Realms mystery adventure for levels 23-27.
Also, come take a look at my latest CRPG writing project with Planewalker Games -- Link
Excellent design, amusing dialogue, simple and lots of fun to play.
Fighters might need to go in at a lower level than recommended. Be sure to bring your own healing with you and keep your weapons and armour pretty simple without additional properties added to them.

Superb adventure. Played with Ranger.
Blink lynx companion makes it even better.
Will be added as Ranger/Druid/Barabarian class specific module to the list I'm developing on social bioware forums. _________________________ Thanks Rolo:)

Great little module! Perfect for my fifth level wizard. Just the right degree of challenge and the story line was engaging, if linear.

SPOILER ALERT
---------------
I had no trouble dispatch the dragon with my (by then) 6th level wizard, my familiar, a summoned dire wolf, and our feline friend. Actually, he was easier than the dragon.

Decent low level adventure with some unique bits.

Pretty good for a low level adventure!

First off, the designation for levels 5-8 is a bit misleading; I cant see a 5th level character surviving this thing unless youve got some serious gear. Most typical opponents were hitting twice per round at between +7 to +9, for avg dmg ranging from 6 to 12 points a shot, and boss monsters were at almost twice that. Add the possibility of being surrounded by foes from ambushes in areas providing little possibility for strategic fighting and youll be hard-pressed to survive. If you play under hardcore difficulty with single-player ILR and you have gear appropriate to your level, you should probably consider using a 7th-level char. I ended up leveling my 5th-level char to 7th using the console, and that seemed to be about right. Squishy builds will probably want to be at lvl 8.
There were a few bugs:
- in the village, the hogs in the pen suddenly went all glowy for no reason at all, then attacked me, scoring a hit which then prompted an auto-attack response, which resulted in *all* of the NPCs going all glowy, casting epic spells at me, etc. (For such a tiny, supposedly backwoods village, that was surprising to say the least...) reload... :-(
- an epic frost trap has no place in a dungeon billed as 5th level! reload... :-(
All of that aside, I found the module to be very engaging. Great story, solid dialog, interesting challenges and multiple ways to handle them all made for a lot of fun. Care & attention given to dialog & how it could determine various plot elements, and entertaining NPCs with real character added to a great experience.
The module is short; you may gain 1 level, depending on your starting level and how you complete quests.
Delf - that's a fair criticism of the plot. My defense is that I was staying true to the source material. In the original book, most of the slaves were in a zombie-like state (probably to alleviate any moral dilemma with some of the potential endings). There were some plot lines in the choose-your-own-adventure book that brought you into contact with some non-zombie slaves and I included that too.
I check back on these pages once every so often (I no longer have time to build, or even play much) and it's really gratifying and amazing to me that something I created SEVEN years ago is still being enjoyed by folks out there. Thanks for the vote and leaving your comment. _________________________ El Dano Black Thorn -- a Forgotten Realms mystery adventure for levels 23-27. A well-written short adventure with a good mix of story, action, role-playing, atmosphere and henchman (or should I say henchcat?) interaction. One thing I didn't like though (*possible small spoiler*) were the slaves whose minds had been destroyed. I suppose this was done so the author wouldn't be put to a lot of trouble doing the dialogues and scripts necessary if the player was to interact with and perhaps try to rescue every last one of them, but it seemed a rather unrealistic and contrived device, even people who have spent their whole lives in brutal slavery can still talk. even people who But that's just a minor detail. All in all a very enjoyable module.
afroxilanthi - Yes, that final subplot was WAY tacked on and not fleshed out at all. Definitely a legitimate gripe. I'm very glad you enjoyed the mod - thanks for voting and leaving substantive feedback.
I'm out of building at the moment - the family got bigger since my last mod and the little ones demand lots of time. If I manage to find some free time, I'll mull something over now that I see people are still DLing and playing NWN after all this time. I thought for sure the game would die with NWN2 (which my computer won't run). _________________________ El Dano Black Thorn -- a Forgotten Realms mystery adventure for levels 23-27. 9.75 from me.
SPILERS!YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
The mod delivered exactly what it promised. Its not a 10 purely for the fact that(in my eyes at least)it left some loose ends to the story)
I am reffering to the traitor among the elementals plot.I felt that the solution(delivering the journal to the head guardian) was too simple.I mean, what were the motives of the traitor?
Other than that i must inform you that i started playing with a 3 level wizard and got him to level 5 by the end of the mod.
It wasn't really that difficult when you use your familiar,a summoned beast and the(godly!) sleep spell:P
Had some rough parts however.Fang was a bitch to die but thanks to the awesome henchman and almost every healing potion we got from the orc supply room we got him.I did not fight the final boss instead choosing to trick him into believing me a gemcutter.I doubt i could defeat him however after the fight with Fang.
Leslie: So glad you enjoyed it. The mod was aimed at a broad RP audience, but especially toward folks like you and me who were blessed to be kids in the heyday of the game.
Berra: Good to hear from you! Thanks for playing and voting. I hope all is well with you. _________________________ El Dano Black Thorn -- a Forgotten Realms mystery adventure for levels 23-27. Mountain of Mirrors -- a classic PnP conversion for levels 4-7.

Flawless and so much fun!
I Happen to have read this particular book, as well as several other 'Choose your onw Adventure' books... Seeing this mod brought back some great childhood memories. My younger brother and sister loved it when we read them together and 're enacted' them as kids. Thank you for that little trip down memory lane!
And thank you so very much for this wonderful mod!
I truly enjoyed this! _________________________ Stupidity kills people.

This was a very interesting module/story and it kept me interested right through it. It had a lot of very interesting concepts like the door, Nigel, Giant, Fang, how you solve quests, various actions in dialog, the different quests like the ice blossom etc.
I didn't find any kind of problems with this mod and I enjoyed it pretty much, much liked I enjoyed your other mod Black Thorn so I'll feel inclined to give this mod a 10.00 vote. :)
PS. I've had my eyes from time to time on this mod ever since it was first released and only now did I get to play it. :D Better late than never as they use to say, right? ;)
Wow - I've been away from the game and this site for a long while and I'm surprised to see comments still rolling in. Thanks to everyone who's posted their thoughts since October when I was last logged on - I'm so glad people continue to enjoy the module. All your comments are really a tremendous psychic reward for the work I put into this. Thank again! _________________________ El Dano Black Thorn -- a Forgotten Realms mystery adventure for levels 23-27. Mountain of Mirrors -- a classic PnP conversion for levels 4-7.

Very well done. I was afraid with a Pick-your-path conversion, there would be long-winded descriptions to wade through, but you captured things visually, showing rather than telling. Impressive. You took environments we're all familiar with, and made them distinct with clever object placement and scripting, and just enough story and dialog to keep me engaged all the way through. I'm trying to think of possible improvements, but nothing's coming to mind. Well done!

OOOOH lovely lovely lovely - I took ages saying goodbye to Nigel - in fact I took him to the garden in the village to say goodbye as it seemed important to do it properly! What a lovely game (I wonder, do I love Nigel so much because of his english accent? And as you can tell by the lack of "awesomes" and "kind ofs", I am an english player and I should point out in case you think this is a strange way for a boy to write, I am in fact the girlfriend of boy who has this profile! ) Anyway, new to NWN (ish) and particularly appreciate the simplicity of the sets - no terribly twisting confusing quests all piled up on each other - and really atmospheric too. So wish I could take Nigel with me to another game - or perhaps adopt him and have him with me all the time! Thanks so much for all the time you spent on this and i do hope Marred in one of your earlier e mail repsonses, was a typing error and nothing freudian about your views on marriage! Very very best to you and thanks again. Happy girlfriend of highly experinced player who has hit level 2 million and still thought your mirror game was fantastic! Vicki xxxx

TANKS Yanos and Udasu for the votes and the feedback. Udasu - it's especially nice to hear from someone who remembers the book way back when. Really glad if brought you back!
And thanks Hugie and Steve -- I honestly never though this one would have the score for the HOF, but it is a pleasant surprise to see the award up there. I see the award led to some DLs as well - always nice to know more people are playing it and still enjoying it. There has never been a bigger bang for the entertainment buck than NWN. _________________________ El Dano Black Thorn -- a Forgotten Realms mystery adventure for levels 23-27. I would tweak a few things, like plot items updating the journal when they go into inventory. But all in all, it was an awesome conversion, and took me back to my childhood. I loved that book, and I love your mod!

A very good mod for single player. Its a shame that the ice door wont melt if you want to melt it, or if you cast fireball at it.

Just played it again after a long absence.

2) a must have in a collection of community mods
Thanks for the vote and feedback, Carlo - glad it brought ack some memories for you. Also glad you thought the level recommendation was right. Just finished the module, want to say thanks for the experience. Well done adventure based on the original book - I'd forgotten parts of it and were happily reminded by the module. Obviously a good deal of work went into polishing the details, which is always greatly appreciated.
I began the adventure with a Rgr5 and found the combat challenging, I think the suggested level range is on the mark (start higher for an easier challenge).
Thanks Knight25! I appreciate the vote and I'm always glad to hear when someone enjoys my work. :) _________________________ El Dano Black Thorn -- a Forgotten Realms mystery adventure for levels 23-27. Mountain of Mirrors -- a classic PnP conversion for levels 4-7.

A thoroughly enjoyable little module. Good background and story development without being too large.
Thanks, amethyst347, glad you enjoyed it. I have heard that said about levels with this mod, but I figured I try to gear my suggestions toward the weaker classes and more inexperienced players. I hope you like Black Thorn -- another short mod... unless you play all 8 solutions ;) _________________________ El Dano Black Thorn -- a Forgotten Realms mystery adventure for levels 23-27.
