Roses for Rosa: Featuring innocent debutantes, animal husbandry, some very perturbed individuals, and YOU!
Adventure background: Elena Petalline, a half-elven bard of some repute, has travelled to the quiet hamlet of Brookford. You hear a rumor that she's hiring capable individuals for some sort of work. You enter the Brookford tavern to find Elena in the midst of a performance...
IMPORTANT NOTE: This module was written for submission in the Bioware writer's contest. In order to meet contest guidelines, combat and exploration has been stripped out and the PC will automatically pass all checks for skill, class, and/or gender. You may speak with some of the NPCs multiple times so that you can explore all the possible dialogue paths. They will not be flagged as "spoken to" until you have completed certain module objectives.
This module is an adapted and much condensed version of the module available here: http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Modules.Detail&id=35681&id=4348

Trimming the module in order to fit contest rules was not the best. _________________________ Thanks Rolo:)

A very nice tale. clearly had an entertaining few hours with this laid back scenario. The visual effect was excellent considering that one only used the standard set, with a very small hak, and of course the moody music did much to set the scene.

I liked this story, but it is very linear, and at times the dialogs become narratives that don't allow player interaction.
One small thing I noticed: if you ask Larellas about a "powerful mage", he skips over "powerful mages" and looks up "puissant mages".

Hm if this is stripped down I guess I've got to get the full one. I'm hungry for more!

As a "stripped" module, it's not quite as complete as those that have been designed specifically for the contest requirements, but the writing here is solid, as is the characterisation and the structure.

Liked it. There was only really one outcome/two variations but enough ways to solve problems/deal with specific NPCs that I still felt in control.

3 different characterizations. Some how the abridgments (arrows on floor, stuck in one area), while necessary to the contest broke the flow and feel of the module; made it a bit artifical

A very nice story. Some very pretty writing, but your characters were too "stereotypical". I didn't take points off for that, since CRPG characters often are. What I did take points off for was the linearity of the story, and you are totally at fault for that because you have way too much talent to limit yourself to a streamlined tale.

5.75 ROSES FOR ROSA (174TH TESTED MODULE)
This is my updated scoring system structured around the format provided by Bioware. The final score is still consistent with my old system, but I hope to give clearer feedback within the new guidelines. NB: Judging any material is always subject to personal taste. I have tried hard to be as objective as possible. Remember, this is only my opinion; Biowares is the one that counts! If you believe I have scored your module unfairly, or I have missed something of importance, please email me at [email protected] and I will consider any comments made.
All nine Bioware points can score a maximum of 1 point each, leaving 1 point for my personal interest/like of the module.
Text of Module: (1.25 out of 3)
The Writing: (I do not scan the writing looking for errors, but if I notice something while reading it, I will note it here.) I noticed a missing word, misuse of punctuation and poor sentence structure. (0.25)
Characterization: Every character appeared over the top. There should be some normality. (0.75)
Dialog Flow: Unfortunately, the nature of this story caused some poor dialog flow long sections. (0.25)
Concept & Execution: (4.0 out of 6)
Originality/Creativity: An original story (although I thought I had heard it somewhere before). (1.0)
Logical Flow: There was one moment when I thought I was simply looking for a rose prop and then, the actual rose. (0.75)
Drama: Discovering the skeleton & the journal was a dramatic moment. (0.75)
Pacing: Again, the nature of the story damaged the pacing of the module. (0.5)
Character Development: There was average character development. (0.5)
Multiple Paths: I will assume two endings. Let me know if there were more. (0.5)
Conclusion: Technically, this module scored average in the writing in my opinion. (1.25/3). The story scored just above average in my opinion. (4.0/6). My personal score is 0.5 out of 1.0 Although there was too much text at times to work as a side-quest, the story was quite a good one. NB: I was scoring this by the criteria set by Bioware. Therefore, it may have scored less because it was a module designed for a bigger scale than was requested.
MY SCORE SYSTEM (IMHO):
< 5 Not up with the competition.
5 - 6 Average.
7 - 8 Above average.
> 8 An exceptional piece
PERSONAL SCORING FACTORS (IN ORDER OF MY PRIORITIES):
GRAB FACTOR: How quickly am I involved in the action? Do I have direction?
PLOT: Is the story engaging? Is subject interesting? Varied conversation choices?
CHARACTERS: Are they easily identifiable? Are they rounded/memorable?
SPELLING & GRAMMAR: Is the text easy to read? Are there quite a few errors?
OTHER FACTORS (MINOR INFLUENCE): Design for atmosphere & scenery, including sounds & props. Quality of module stability; does it break easily? _________________________ World of Althéa Blog: Link

I hope I'm not breaking any "rules" here or anything if I self-vote to get the vote count up to 10. I'm scoring myself the current average so as not to distort the score. If this is unallowed, then site admins feel free to delete.

I was a bit sceptic about this one, but it is actually quite good! Charming story, beautifully written. I have played several more entries that got 'stripped' for this contest, but in those cases it never worked. In 'Roses for Rosa' the 'outer-story' remarks and the bare surroundings do diminish the beauty somewhat, but the story still shines. The NPC's are very well characterized - even if I would liked to have seen an NPC that was less snotty arrogant posh, to see if you also master less florid dialogues. I think I'll play the full version of your module to check that :)

A very good story. My only complaint is that it doesn't quite fit into a contest mod -- the constant "download the full version" statements were annoying.

I enjoyed this, the characters were convincing and had personality. I'm also going to download the complete module now.

Good writing though rube and suckers sounds like Barnum & Bailey. Linear until end. Only two people are interested in journal, Larellas should be too. Will download completed module.

Very fascinating tale, in a generic setup. Good RP dialog options. NPCs have developed and consistent personalities. I downloaded the full mod within the next 24 hours!

Ditto what QSW said.

The author of this module is obviously an extremely skilled writer, each character really does feel full of personality and I enjoyed meeting and conversing with all of them (particularly the femalr bard).
However, the story really seemed "squashed" into the limits of the contest, and relied strongly upon the imagination of the player to generate each area around the story.
Overall, an extremely enjoyable experience, 8.5/10

Having played the original module I know just how smashing this quest/story is. The author has had to remove much of the visual magical atmosphere to adhere to the contests rules. However, the story still stands up well to this test, and would indeed make a superb side quest in one of BioWares larger modules.
A simple, beautiful story, often those are the best kind.

Well. We clearly see a nice short-cut. Good psychology, background and all... but definitely not making it exciting to solve a full mod in 4 minutes. Anyway, this is a good job.
