Description
Tales of the Amazing is about the Forgotten Realms around 300 years after the Times of Troubles.

It is a little known fact, but during that portion of history of the realms, there were children who were born with unusual talents, such as telepathy, powerful regenertion, and near invulnerability.

Some of these 'Mutants' gave birth to other mutants, and their children had children, and so on.

Now some normals are realizing they share their world with people of extraordinary power. Some are seeking peaceful relations. Some are indifferent to them, and others either want them enslaved or destroyed.

You play as The Troll, a mutant regenerator whose skeleton has been infused with enchanted adamite, making him invulnerable to critical hits, and gives him powerful claws.

The first module is completely solo, and the second and third are team based.

Henchman die, but you can raise them with a 'Catalyst'
---------------------------------------
Tales of the Amazing 3-pack is the final beta for Neverwinter Nights.

I might consider creating the Neverwinter Nights Two mutant creation system for Neverwinter Nights. But that is unlikely.

I would like as many comments as possible, especially for powers and catalysts. This is a teaser module. The full version of Tales of the Amazing will be created for Neverwinter Nights 2. It will be complete with a custom mutant creation engine, which I am working on right now, so you can create your own mutant, if you don't want to play The Troll.

What's the fun in playing, of being an "Ueber character"????

Posted by the_storyteller at 2006-10-09 18:33:07
Good evening everybody.

I've got some disappointing news for everybody.

As you all know, I have been working on Tales of the Amazing for NWN2, and I had some grand designs for that series. I may come back to it some day, but now is not the time for that series.

My desire to create the mod was to create a superhero experience in the Forgotten realms, and to get some much needed programming experience before I go to College to pursue my dream of video game development.

As many of you know, One of the super heroes in Tales of the Amazing isn't from Marvel, but a character that I created.

I am going to take this year to develop that character's story to the fullest, with concept art and story development.

I am also taken the responsibility of being a reviewer here at the Vault. My thought was I want to play the good, the bad, and the ugly modules to learn what is good for gameplay and what is horrible for gameplay, lessons I will be taking on the way to my goals.

Hello everybody.

I just wanted to give everybody a heads up on my work. I've completed most of the scripting work for the Mutant Creation system that I will be using for Neverwinter Nights 2.

Currently, I haven't done any work on any mutant type that involves shape shifting, mainly due to two reasons. the Polymorph.2da and Appearance.2da file for NWN2 are unknowns to me right now. I need to know what polymorph options I have in scripting for NWN2, and what appearances to put into them.

I've purchased the Pre-order for NWN2, and as soon as I upgrade my computer, I'm goint to transfer all the work I have done for NWN1 to NWN2.

After that, the completion of the Mutant Creation System for NWN2 should be finished by the launch of NWN2.

That means I should have the first module completed by Christmas (That's what I am aiming for!), and then the second part for March, third part for June and finalle for next September.

I've done alot of improvements, and I have alot of thoughts.

All powers are going to have a graduating effect.

I.e. - a Dual entity will get 30 bonus hit points + 10 bonus hit points per level of the character, for a total of an extra 230 hit points at level 20.

I'm also changing catalysts. There will be three powers of catalysts - lesser, normal, and greater. That will increase the power of some lower level catalysts, making them a little more useful, while limiting them so they will not come close to player abilities.

I'm going to put up some polls on my website to get feedback on what people would like to see the most in my modules by the end of the weekend.

Cocerning The Troll's backstory. I want to save something for Neverwinter Nights 2. Consider NWN 1 the theatrical release, and NWN 2 the director's cut of the module.

After all, I don't want my players to go, ho-hum, I've played this story before.

Thanks Vultan. I appreciate your comments and the vote. Woot - 7.75.

On the Combat Boost - I definitely considered it overpowered, especially for a defensive based character. I plan on having combat boost having much lower boosts for Neverwinter Nights 2, but at verying levels - i.e. - Someone like the Troll will get +5 to hit +8 to damage, but someone like Black Widow getting +8 to hit and +12 to damage, and Captain Amazing will have a bonus inbetween that - +6 to hit +10 to damage. But with the revisions I will be making for Neverwinter Nights 2 - The Troll's base regeneration will not cover the 10 per cent hit point cost of it. Plus, the Troll won't get that ability until the later levels of the game (After all, his job is to be surrounded by lots of guys trying to beat him down.)

On catalysts, when you suggested the Ion Stones for catalysts, I thought, that is a great idea. I'll definitly try to keep that as an Idea for NWN 2.

And on 'Dual Entities' such as Spruce Spenner, or one you create yourself, I am going to scale back the abilities a little bit, and the bonus hitpoints alot, but I want them to still feel 'hulkish'. In Neverwinter Nights 2, I believe Spruce as a wizard will have much more effect. First, you can control him in combat (at least that is what Obsidian is advertising you can do with companions), so you can strategically cast spells. Second, you will have complete control of him and the Ogre, and decided when it is the best time to change into the Ogre.

On the other characters - Inferno doesn't work so well in Neverwinter Nights 1, and neither does Shifty. Inferno uses all of her most powerful abilities first, including incindary cloud (ouch for the Troll) first, and Shifty doesn't use any of his powers. The AI in Neverwinter Nights just plain 's***s'.

I'll create more challanging combat in Neverwinter Nights 2 as well. I'll figure out the right balance to challange either The Troll or a Hero/Villian you choose to create. I plan on strengthening anything considered 'mutant' by giving them mutant sub species ability bonuses, and give them properties of a sub set of mutant sub species that is appropriate to them. I also plan on doing that for all villians, and I will make all end villians three times the projected player character level, and their body guards twice the player character's projected level.

I will also allow for more experience in the modules, by allowing a fraction of experience for kills - not as much as Neverwinter Nights 2, something like 2 or 3 per cent.

On the Linear Story line - I am definitely planning on creating something major for Tales of the Amazing for Neverwinter Nights 2, which I can't make in NWN 1. I figure it should take about a year to work on it.

I plan on making four modules (Level 1-6, taking you to the module before Spider; Level 7-14, and then 15-20+, and the final one). There will be the main story line, and three other minor story lines at the same time. Each module will have a world map.

The main storyline will pit you against some very famous X-men villian clones, as well as others. The secondary stories will bring you against (or for, depending on what you choices) some of the greatest evil organizations in the Realms, like Zenthrim, The Red Wizards of Thay, the Fire Knives, and others. And then there is Laruk - which will be almost invincible and that mission will begin your journey to your final destiny.

Although the Troll will be a major character in the modules you play for Neverwinter Nights 2, you will have a chance to create and play your own character if you want to. I'm planning on making two versions of the first module. One specifically for the Troll, and one for any mutant you choose to create.

I also plan on having a fourth alignment choice - seeking balance. Like Glory, it won't move your alignment towards good or evil, but it is a much more subtle approach to the game. Each way you play will have benefits and disadvantages, and open up different quests, while preventing others.

And the end story will absolutely amaze you. Both your fate, and the fate of the Realms will hang in the balance. What will you choose?

Thanks for the vote of confidence Vultan. I'll definitely consider you for beta testing for Neverwinter Nights 2.

I forgot about the catalysts:
First, they could be a little smaller, perhaps you could use some of the Ion-Stones for this or similar objects, and give them different colors and appearances. They would be easier to tell apart and take up less inventory space that way. They are also very powerful - perhaps they should be a little less multifunctional. And the one that gives you a huge bonus to various abilities (sorry, forgot the name) but costs some health points is absolutely overpowered. It has unlimted uses and the high regeneration of the Troll allows you to use this one whenever you like, the drawback is abolutely no hindrance!

Ok, here's my vote, as promised, and I must say there's a not-too-small-I'm-an old-X-men-fan-bounus in it.

The good side:
- very nice readme and introduction with a real super hero/ mutant style character description
- cool character, fun to play low level but with super powers
- some nice jokes, cool lines and parody of well known sci-fi/ fantasy elements and characters

The bad side
- very short and extremly linear
- not much NPC interaction, there is definite room for more X-men feeling in there by boosting the roleplaying opportunities
- no side plots
- no XP gain for combat, just fixed awards and therefore predestined level up points and progression
- the maps are somewhat lacking in detail...

The Ugly:
- I didn't like Spruce Spranner, he's just too powerful as the Astonishing Ogre, and not very interesting or useful as a mage (I think that the AI is insufficient for spellcasters anyway, and I avoid taking them as henchmen whenever possible). Since I was forced to take him along, I was not very happy. Where was Inferno? I wanted to dig her :P

- The fights could have been a bit tougher and more diverse. The spider ambush was cool, though!

- I took a little too long to get into the action, and there was next too nothing about the Troll's background and any personal involement into the storyline. That would have been a great way to increase the atmosphere, even if you intened to go for a humorous module.

All in all, I consider this a teaser. I'd like to play some more Tales of the Amazing and see some of the other characters in action. I'm sure that you are familiar with many of the Marvel comics, and if you were willing to create an experience that goes under your skin, like some of the dark and menacing X-men adventures, I'd consider myself very happy and give it another try! Keep it up!

Cheers
Vultan

No problem Vultan.

The 'stupidity' is on my part. I went into the toolset myself, and I realized that I didn't give a 'hint'.

Sorry about that.

Yeah, I dawned on me after looking into it via the toolset that this is as far as it goes. Hehehe, makes me look a little stupid, doesn't it? But honestly, I don't think there was a hint that this is the end of the module.

I'll do as you say and take a shot at the next. Voting follows as soon as I was able to play all the three parts, I promise!

Cheers
Vultan

Thanks for your comment.

I tried creating module transfers within each of the modules, but there was a problem with the transfer from the second to the third - it kept on messing the cutscene up.

I made the decision to advise the character that the module was over (I hope I put that in), and you should save your character and play the next - which would be The Queen of Spiders.

I tried to have a save the character already, but the script doesn't work for some reason, not sure why.

I will fix the reward though.

About the traps, thanks for the input. I will implement it asap, and I'll upload the file for the next group.

First off, thanks for the mod, the intro made me eager very eager to dive into some mutant fantasy action. As an old X-men fan, I simply had to try this.

But I have a question and a suggestion:

SPOILERS FOLLOW!

First off, I did as you recommended and took a level as rogue, putting some points and sneaking, search and disarm traps. I was a little disappionted that there was nothing I could do against the traps in the Mystery Room and the Gauntlet. Most of these traps being lethal, I had to reload several times and was a little annoyed. Perhaps you should enable trap disarming for these, since the lesson is obviously about finding traps and proceeding with caution. I think there's nothing wrong with disarming traps instead of walking around them. And some of the traps in the Gauntlet would do with a little less damage, especially since the red highlight doesn't always show the correct trigger zone, being partially hidden in the tiles.

And now to my question, which is likely about a bug: In the Red Dragon - Little Girl test, I tried to stick with the picture of a young Wolverine, and decided to attack the dragon. The Battlemaster sends me to the Prof. erm I mean Wizard after that, and I receive a minor Glory catalyst - again and again if I want to, because the dialoge doesn't advance from here on, and I don't know how to continue the mod.
Please help me out or fix this, I want to see the whole module!

Greetings
Vultan

I would like to appologize. I forgot to put the modern interior tileset by the d20 team to be downloaded.

Without it, The Lights in the Sky would not be playable. The file should be online now.

It is in the Hak.rar file.
