Description
Stormlight CEP Version 2.3

Stormlight is a Community Expansion Version 2.3 module that runs on Neverwinter Nights Version 1.69, with Shadows of Undrentide, and Hoards of the Underdark (That means, the computer or server to be used for running this module must have Neverwinter Nights, Shadows of Undrentide, and Hoards of the Underdark, and the installation must be updated to Version 1.69). This module will not run without the Community Expansion Pack Version 2.3 (CEP version 2.3) installed.

Stormlight is a high-flying adventure that takes place in the skies over the Faerun, where after foiling the plans of assassins, giants, and hoards of undead in the modules The Golden Forest, Bugged, and Giants Among Us, you take to the skies to bring justice to suffering human(oid) rights abuses at the hands of ruthless traders and dictators (Bugged will be renamed The Assassin and the Bug, and may undergo some enhancements).

Your journey will take you back to the lush forests of the Charwoods and the Neverwinter River. Then you will visit the frozen mountains of the Spine of the World, and the vast wastelands of the Anauroch Wastes. You will travel in style aboard one of three known floating fortresses that hail back to the glorious days of the Netherese (or perhaps, all three). You will also get to meet many interesting creatures and people, and kill them.

Finally, you will brace for the ultimate showdown between you and an old friend (whom you may have met in The Golden Forest) aboard another relic of Netheril.

We hope that you will enjoy Stormlight.

Some Notes to Consider:

1. Stormlight is an admittedly slow-starting module. After an initial confrontation with some nasties that decided to accompany you to your first stop, You may have to spend some time (maybe an hour or so) to figure out the workings of the Storm Fortress, getting established as a Guild Member, and even finding out what your first assignment is (did you bring your flying carpet? Oh. Thats okay. They sell them at the Stormlighters Guild).

2. Bring money. Lots of money. Guild memberships and flying carpets are expensive (hope you brought your own). But thats okay. Stormlight grants government subsidies to player characters of low income and low wealth. These subsidies are cheerfully funded by the taxpayers.

3. Flying Fortresses: There are several of these in Stormlight. In fact, your first stop is at one of these. I cannot tell you exactly how many there are without giving you Spoiler Information. Each fortress has something in common. They have a set of flight controls, and an engine room. Some of them have additional features, but you will have to play the module to discover them. It is possible to use the flying carpet to travel to another fortress if: 1) The other fortress is in the same region that the fortress you flew from is in (more on regions later), and 2) The other fortress has arrived into the game. Other fortresses arrive into the game as Stormlight play progresses.

How you pilot these fortresses has consequences. If you fly them too high, the tenants can get altitude sickness. If you fly them too fast, they might yell and scream at you. High winds can knock people down, too. Finally, remember. High winds can also knock you down, and high altitude can also get you sick.

There are some Flying Fortresses in Stormlight that are really floating fortresses. That is, you cannot control where they are, or where they go.

4. Regions: There are four regions in Stormlight. One of these regions is Free Parking, and you cannot get down to the surface from a fortress that is parked there. Each region represents a set of areas that can be reached from a fortress that is parked in that particular region. For instance, if the Storm Fortress is parked over the Faerun, you can use your flying carpet to get to any area in the Faerun that youve been to before. However, if you want to get to Blizzard Hills from the Storm Fortress, you have to move the Storm Fortress to the River Mirar (Spine of the World) region first, because that is where Blizzard Hills is located.

5. Guilds: There are many guilds in Stormlight. There is one guild for every flying fortress, and everyone is welcome to join. Membership dues vary, and only need to be paid once. There are also a number of franchise guilds that cater to specific classes. Only members of those particular character classes my join them.

6. Recall Devices: The Stone of Recall device does work in Stormlight, but it isnt the only recall device available. In fact, there are more than several recall devices here. Each recall device takes you to a different guild. Hint: If you ditch your Stone of Recall before talking to the Stormlighters Guild Secretary, she will give you a much better Recall Device when you join that guild (anyone got 5,000 gold coins worth of change they can spare; I told you to bring money). If you attempt to use a Recall Device that is tied to a flying fortress that is not In Game, you will lose that Recall Device. However, once the flying fortress is In Game, you will be able to receive that Recall Device back (when you join the guild, and give them some of your money).

7. Dying Rules: There is a substantial XP penalty for carking off, -even if its for a good reason. Respawning will bring you back into the Stormlighters Guild. However, there are certain items that will resurrect you, and cause you to be instantly transported to your assigned guild if you have one of these in your possession. This will save you a lot of XPs, and lots of gold. Stormlight tracks the number of times that you pay Elvis a visit, because you are encouraged to play and fight in a neat, efficient manner, without getting sloppy or lazy (Aw. I aint gonna worry about dying, I got several dozen of these things anyway, and Ill just get transported to where I can get even more!). You wont lose XPs, but you will lose the item.

8. Assigned Guild: If you use any recall device, that device will bring you to its matching guild. Once you enter that guild (either through Recall, or if you simply walk in), you are now assigned to that guild. The main implication here is that if you die while possessing certain items, you will be resurrected and brought back to that guild, without an XP penalty. Also, the places that you can reach are dependent on which fortress you are assigned to, and what region that fortress is in. That means that if you left the Storm Fortress to visit the River Mirar, then used a Cloudshire Recall device, then (assuming Cloudshire was in the Anauroch region), if you used the flying carpet from River Mirar, you would then be able to fly to any area in the Anauroch region, but not the River Mirar region. This is because the logic behind the use of the Flying Carpet depends on which fortress you are assigned to.

9. Henchmen: There are henchmen in Stormlight. They charge one-time retainer fees that are based on their challenge rating (again, I told you to bring money).

10. Portals: There are several portals that are located within the guilds. There is a Recall Portal which takes you back to where you were when you used your recall device, there is a Boss Portal that transports you to your party leader, and there is a Death Portal that takes you back to where ever you were when you assumed room temperature. All portals are free of charge (see, Im not that greedy after all). It is important to note that a portal will not work at all, unless there is occasion for it to (the death portals wont work, until you have had a death, and the recall portals wont work until you have used the corresponding recall device).

11. Campaign Databases: Stormlight uses campaign databases extensively. These databases track the progress of players quests throughout Stormlight, they keep track of where players have been so they can get back to them quickly on the flying carpets, they track which henchmen players have hired so they dont get charged retainer fees again, and they also track guild memberships. They campaign databases do more than what is mentioned here, but the main implication is, that if you finish Stormlight and want to play it over again, restarting the module isnt enough. You have to delete all of the campaign databases in the \database folder. Stormlight does allow the option of restarting the module in-game, and it does this by destroying (resetting) some of the campaign databases, and resetting critical campaign variables before restarting the module. However, players may still have their guild memberships, henchmen information, and logs of places they visited (for the flying carpet) preserved.

12. Rating: Some of the characters in Stormlight do use strong language. There are also certain topics that Stormlight deals with, which may drive a stronger rating. Stormlight follows the game rating of Neverwinter Nights itself. When using the MPAA system to determine if you should let your children play Stormlight, consider this module to be PG-13.

13. Conversations: Some characters will begin to move to another location after a conversation. If they do this, it is best not to attempt to converse with them again until they reach their next station. This is a potential showstopper, and yes, we know that this is a rotten bug, but Ill see if I can do something about it. A later revision might have this fixed. There are a lot of crowd scenes in the module, and there are some areas where every single character has their own name, and in some places, most of the guys are even sitting down. I do apologize in advance, that this can make it difficult to pick out who will actually talk to you. The only thing I can say right now is, if he or she looks important, then clicking on them to see if they will talk to you never hurts. Look for owners, bosses, chiefs, and other grand high muckety-muck types. Someone sitting behind a bar or desk might have something to say. People seen walking an obvious set of waypoints might also have a few words.

14. Map Notes, Descriptions, Journal Entries, Signs, etc: We know that you want to get out there and play ball with a few mummies noggins, but it is important that you read these things. They do tell you where you need to go, and what you need to do. If you take time to read every now and then, youll avoid beating your head against the wall.

15. Module Level: This is an epic module. Therefore, we recommend that you do not play characters in this module that are less than 20th Level. Even epic characters have a reasonable expectation of having their asses handed to them every now and then (I told you this is a PG-13 module).

16. Puzzles and Riddles: There are some puzzles and riddles in Stormlight, so dont be afraid to put down the sword and pick up a notepad every now and then. Some tasks are accomplished by killing bad guys, some are accomplished by putting items in such things as bookcases, stands, coffins, etc. Some tasks may also be accomplished by entering certain locations (often while carrying certain items in your possessions). Some tasks are accomplished by using certain items in certain areas (did you see that Unique Power property in the items description?).

17. Enemy? What Enemy?: You have probably heard this said before, but not everyone who attacks you and tries to kill you is your enemy, and not everyone who shakes your hand is your friend. This is very true in Stormlight. It is imperative that you pay attention to your setting, the plot, and especially the motives of the non-player characters (especially group motives), if you want to know who the enemies are. Sometimes, a little smooth talking, and maybe using disguises is better for saving your skin than a quick sword. Also, if someone is trying to help you out, especially in a battle, you might reconsider using that Fireball spell. The Stinking Cloud spell might also be out of the question. Some of the guys here get really pissed off because of friendly fire incidents, and they never forget those!

18. Role-Playing: The characters of Stormlight use modern-day English, versus period English (I understand that that is a role-playing dimension). There are guilds that are exclusive to certain character classes, and we also tried to avoid any items that give player characters abilities that they shouldnt have (such as a Paladin that can pick locks). Well, so much for role-playing enforcement. The primary weapons in this module are tailored for good characters. However, there are versions of these primary weapons that are tailored for evil characters. If we tell you any more about this, wed be letting the cat out of the bag. We cant make a certain claim that Stormlight is a strong role-playing module, because to be honest, we are not sure of our definition of role-playing. Perhaps, someone out there can help us with this.

19. CEP Content and Other Content: CEP Version 2.3 is the only custom content that Stormlight uses. It is our opinion that CEP makes Neverwinter Nights. This is the only Hak Pak that is installed on this module. CEP Version 2.3 is required to be installed Server-side and Client-side for Stormlight to run (or, simply installed on the dog-gone computer for single player sessions).

20. Refereeing Stormlight: Stormlight is designed to be played as a single player or multiplayer module. It is not necessary for a DM client to log into this module and serve as a referee or facilitator. However, as always, a good dungeonmaster/referee is always an asset to a fulfilling role-playing experience. One thing to note however: Stormlight is a very chatty module when it comes to DM clients. This module logs significant events (such as quest assignments and completions), and anything that gets logged also gets transmitted to all DM clients. This is intended to keep referees informed, and to increase their situational awareness, so that they can run a smoother session. Admittedly, some of these messages can be long winded, and quite archaic, but an informed DM is a good DM. There is a DM Client Tool Item available to DM Clients that when used, transports the DM to a special area where they can control certain aspects of the game. These aspects include running the module as a Deathmatch server, and changing the difficulty challenge setting of certain features of the module. The DM Client Tool is something that a Player Client shouldnt have, and this module will let them know under no uncertain terms!

21. Previous CEP Versions: Stormlight was upgraded from CEP Version 2.2 to 2.3 on August 5, 2010. We observed a number of requests from the NWN Vault community to have this done. We will keep version 2.2 posted for a while, but we will sustain and maintain configuration control on version 2.3.

22. Credits: The Henchman system was developed by an individual identified by the Screen-name Mercury (March 2004). Stormlight Test and Evaluation (T&E) was performed with the aid of my daughter Celine.

23. New Areas Added: We added a new area to the module. This is a swamp area which includes several abandoned swamp houses, an old temple, and a defunct shoreline guard tower. A new character with an attitude was also added. She awaits you in the swamp Thank you Mike Sharp for suggesting that we add a swamp to Stormlight, and also that we add a Drow character who might be some lucky guys henchman. If we tell you any more, we risk giving you a spoiler.

24. Housing: Stormlight has a Housing system designed by Hunters Housing and Property. This system was designed for Persistent World modules and systems, and was added here as requested by DM_Shadowdragon. Thank you Hunters Housing and Property, and DM_Shadowdragon.

25. A word about sustainment: Stormlight has moved from the Development phase to the Sustainment phase. Upon completion of development, it was deployed to the field (that is, uploaded to the NWN vault, so that it can be shared). Completion of development has rendered the module complete and final. However, if we do see any improvements that can be made, we will make those, and update my module submittal. If this does cause you any inconvenience, we do apologize. Its just that we want to give you the best customer service that we can, by presenting the best product possible.

26. Amnesia: Stormlight assumes that you have played previous modules in the series (Stormlight is the last in the series): The Golden Forest, Bugged, and Giants Among Us. Some of the conversations in this module refer back to these other three modules.

27. Grievers: A griever is a player who cyber-bullies other players by repeatedly and intentionally killing them for fun. Stormlight has a system that tracks grievers, and lets them know under no uncertain terms that they wont be tolerated. The module keeps score on how many times a player has killed another player. If this players score gets too high, they will be shown that change is good. This feature is disabled if the module is run as a Deathmatch server. The module has a local variable that is used as the Griever Tolerance Setting.

28. Deathmatch: Stormlight can be run as a Deathmatch server. This is accomplished by changing a local variable in the Modules variables (changing it to a 1). The module can also be put into Deathmatch mode by a DM Client. This mode allows players to kill each other without being penalized.

29. Significant Events: Certain events in Stormlight are permanently logged and tracked in a Campaign Database. That means, you cannot avoid or escape the effects of consequences of the event by reloading, or even restarting the game. If we tell what these events are, we would be releasing potential spoiler information. However, these event logs are intended to be reset when Stormlight is reset after completion.

30. If Everyone Wants To Kick Your Ass: They used to be real nice to me here on the Storm Fortress, but now everyone wants to kick my ass! Why? If you were trying to help these guys fight one of the baddies that (might have) followed you to the Storm Fortress, and a friendly got clipped by one of your spells (say a Fireball), they tend to get pissed about these things. Also, if you get bored, and start plinking spells, magic items, or anything else for that matter at friendlies, they tend to get pissed, then they will come and kick your ass. About the only thing you can do is to reset the server (or hope it resets when you log off), or restart the game (preferably from your last Saved Game) so that they will forget your transgression. Otherwise, they will still be waiting for you to continue administering your ass-kicking. These guys have a zero tolerance policy regarding friendly fire incidents. They also don't appreciate you using Weapons of Mass Destruction while they're around.

Please let me know if you have any questions, or if you suspect that you get stuck somewhere. I only wish that NWN and these modules could be rehosted on the XBox, Wii, and other gaming consoles. If they could rehost these modules in any sort of 3-D or Virtual Reality systems, people would get a helluva workout!
