RAD is proud to offer our true-color codec, Bink Video! Bink is a 'better-than-MPEG-II' class codec - it compresses with more quality than MPEG-II at up to three times the playback speed! Bink is a hybrid block-transform and wavelet codec that can encode your video using 16 different compression techniques (wavelet, DCT, motion compensation, a variety of vector quantizers, Smacker-style, etc). With all of these techniques in one codec, Bink can handle any type of video. Bink has a psycho-acoustic based audio codec that is capable of 8 to 1 perceptually lossless compression, so your audio will sound as good as your video looks!

Just my $0.02... There is another thing to consider. Implementing the playback functionality in the engine. Bink is basically about 5 lines of code to link in the *.dll.
I've got no idea how hard it would be to implement Divx...
This is a compilation of the old system into a single score. There were 7 that made this score of 6.57 then rounded to 7.

Bah! If you want to make videos for your own use, sure, use
DivX or MPEG or whatever, but as for NWN, you're stuck with
Bink. Can't complain much, though, Bink videos are generally
pretty good quality-wise. =)
I should say here that Bioware was Very Naughty and made a
Portability Blunder, as Bink availability on Linux was what
it was, but, well, they used What Seemed Like A Good Idea At
The Time.
(BTW, for some reason, for me the NWN video playback is
choppy. Maybe because the opening video has Artifacts? =)

BINK is a horrible video codec, i have no idea why anyone
in their right mind would use this, when they could just as
easily get better looking (and smaller!) videos with DivX
(which is a modified MPEG4 format).
