nwStory is a pair of utilities to aid Neverwinter Nights adventurers in writing tales of their online exploits by making use of the NWN chat log. Cleave is a simple application for viewing chat logs colour coded by chat mode (i.e. Talk, Tell, Party ...). The tool can filter log entries by chat mode and/or player name and can also export the filtered log as plain text or HTML. Clobber is a small utility that will launch NWN and automatically backup the chat log with a time stamped & versioned file name on exit. By using Clobber to launch NWN one need not worry about losing the chat log of any gaming session. There are builds of Cleave for both Win32 & Linux, however, Clobber is a Win32 only tool.
UPDATE: Clobber now supports launching the NWN DM client with the new command line parameter: -dm
I just downloaded both cleave and clobber and clobber works fine but cleave will not open the .txt files at all. All I get when I click open and select the file is a blank background color. Any ideas?

I just downloaded and tested your programs: Cleave seems very handy, Clobber on the other hand. Seems I get an error message when I exit NWN and it attempts to move the log.
Any suggestions? I went to your web site for some FAQ's and just saw a dare. _________________________ He who runs, can return to save the day. 'Tis not cowardice, but a wise appraisal of thy situation to best utilize thy skills for the good of all concerned. Good program (Cleave). Could have done with an installation program though.
I didn't use Clobber but it seemed like a good idea for folks who forget.

I don't suppose you could send me a copy of a log file that doesn't display correctly for you? It would help me see what the problem is so I can fix it. You could send it to: [email protected]

now the logging seems to add a date and time for each line :S And as I added a log to cleave there only appear some few lines such as "WARNING: ServerVaultFilter=2. Correcting Value." , nothing else.

It seems when the ClientEntireChatWindowLogging option is enabled all "extra" lines, such as server messages & dice rolls, are prefixed with "[CHAT WINDOW TEXT]". Regular dialogue is still written to the log file as before, so I made a trivial change to Cleave to simply skip any lines that begin with "[CHAT WINDOW TEXT]".
I uploaded a new build for Win32 to SourceForge. Make sure you download version 1.1.
sorry for the late response.
If your playing a game and want to check over the log quickly to see what the players said (not how well the hit in the fights that must come as well in some stories) it's very hard to see whats talking and whats fighting logs (and what i mean by fighting logs, it's the attack rolls, damage rolls, the thing the nwn machine does automaticly). Also, my last few games are all just in red (malformed line being the ONLY player on the player list). I think that cleaver needs a huge update? :S
When you say "fighting entries" do you mean the combat log (showing all the rolls & saves etc ...) or do you mean the random battle cries PC's make when fighting? I honestly never thought to test using a chatlog from a session that included combat.
I can't discern talking from fighting becouse it's all mixed up and theres no way to un-click the "fighting entries" button - couse it isn't there. The best is to unclick the "unknown" entries and so far i haven't seen any difference when i unclick it and Apply.
Any way to update?

You sir, are both a gentleman and a scholar - thank you very much
Hmmmm, I never thought of that. Guess that shows how much I use the DM client, ha ha!. Well it turned out to be a simple addition, so consider it "Done and done!".
You can launch the DM client instead of the game client by using the '-dm' command line parameter. The other command line parameters function identically as before.

Actually I havent really used Cleave, what would be useful is a version of clobber that starts the DM client and logs that convos safely from that as well
You are welcome. Well I'm curious which tool players find more useful: Cleave or Clobber? I've been debating whether or not to port Clobber to Linux as well, but I'm not sure if it would be worth the effort.
