And now for something completely different... This one is 100% original artwork. Started as a pencil sketch, colored in PSP8. And yes, it is Gandalf, but since he is the Archetypal Wizard, I figured it couldn't hurt to have a portrait of him. Besides, I know there are LOTR modules around. Probably more useful as an NPC than a PC, I'm sure he could be reproduced in a variety of seasonal colors.
Update: Updated this to the final version which was just accepted to Epilogue.net (woo hoo). Bumped up the contrast and overall made the highlights and shadows more dramatic. New files replace old files.

This is the portrait I feel will be great for my wizard.
Soon as I saw him, it reminded me of the scene towards the end of Harrp Potter's 6th book with Harry and Dumbledore when they are walking through the dark cave.

Ok, it's now been updated. Actually, I wasn't expecting this one to be heavily downloaded. Old dudes are not as popular as hot chicks, and that's just a fact. ;-) I sometimes feel like the download stats on the hot chicks says something more about voyeurism than it does about what people actually play in the game... In any case, I hope the portrait will be useful for the gamers and module builders out there. :-)
Gyr.. You really dont have to think in such ways. Your portraits are among the most downloaded and popular portraits on the vault.
I feel like you sometimes as well though. If there's anything a artist loves, it is to know his or hers work is appreciated. One of the reasons im continuing to make portraits is not only that I mostly get positive and constructive responding, but also because I think its fun.
Original artwork like this is nice and wonderful, but photo manipulations can be just as skillfully done. Its just two different ways to make portraits. You still need to get the ligthning rigth, and sometimes change the base images dramatically. Its not always easy. Unfortunately, thats the opinion some people have.
Even though they download the portraits and use them in game.
On the next update.. try and have a look at how many people actually downloaded your portrait. Then have a look at how many comments you got. its quite shocking.
"Q: How many artists does it take to change a light-bulb?
A: Ten. One to change the bulb and nine to tell him how good it looks. "
not quite so true, expecially when you work with masters. the other nine would be telling him how much better they could do it. huge ego, these artists have, and egos can be painful, espcialy in michael angilos case. he kept on critisizing the same guy so the guy broke his nose... characteristic of artist, they tend to be really mean, and only the good ones too...
sory, studing for psycology final. so scared. i know im going to fail..... :'(

This is really wonderful. I can't see a thing wrong with it. I love the style and the lighting. And, I can relate to the joke, too. Most people think my original works ARE photo manips. :P
Sorry! Just having tpyical angsty-artist syndrome. ("Nobody likes me they all hate my work I'm a failure I think I'll just go crawl in a dark hole and eat leaded paint") Sorta reminds me of a joke I saw recently:
Q: How many artists does it take to change a light-bulb?
A: Ten. One to change the bulb and nine to tell him how good it looks.
It's so true.
But you're right. It does need more contrast (argh, me and my reluctance to make deep shadows). And I will be working on that as well as some other tweaks to hopefully get it in my Epilogue gallery.
Thanks! :-)

Yay! Original work!
You are wrong Gyr! Some of us like the original stuff far better that the photo-manip stuff. (In fact, I'd rather you'd do this kind of thing than the photo manips. Heck, my husband, who can't draw can make better photoshop collages than I because he knows how to use the program. But he could never paint anything from scratch the way we can.)
Please keep up this good work! My only criticism is that it could use a bit more contrast, but that's personal preference.

I like it. I thought it was a unique pose, and I like the facial detail. Good work!

*sigh* No-one likes original works very much around here, unless they look like photos. Photos photos photos. Bah humbug. [gruntle gruntle...ok, I'm not being bitter...] Well, thanks for the comment, Apricane. :-) I'm still working on this piece to try to get it accepted to Epilogue. We shall see.
Ah now, if he didnt have that hat, he could pass for a wizard of mine of course :p Very cool gyr! SOmething is just not right about his mouth though.. Otherwise it rocks! I think im going to give you 10... two times, if i can get away with it! Nay... :p
