This portrait really caught my eye. Probably because it reminds me of Shaman King's Patch "tribe council members"... I love everything about it. I do not mind the "hand not being on the staff" at all.. I thought in a way the mage/priest himself holds it up with his powers or something ^^.
I do not care for the big chin detail, but the chin does seem to be colored a little to "bright" compared to the other areas of the face... whether that was intended or not, I do not know.

On another note, very good artword, though I tend to favor photorealism (which, I think adds a realistic aspect which fantasy requires to seem at all plausible), I think this is a very good painting. The hand... I think is irrelevant to the overall feel of the painting. I think that perhaps you may have over accensuated his chin. And, to quote an earlier comment, does make him look a bit like "young John Kerry."

Sammael, you're character's name with another 'm,' is the angelic name of Satan, King of Hell. Interesting choice for the name of a 'good' mage.

I'm sorry, the whole picture is gorgeous except for that ridiculous chin. Why does it have to be so big?

thanks guys and gals.....i agree with Apricane (it would be better if you could see the hand holding the staff) but i got a little lazy, and just positioned the staff so that the hand could be hypothetically behind the robe. when i have time, i might fix it up.

Nice nice nice! I love the new style and the only "problem" is that he isn't really holding his staff, but I wouldn't have noticed it if someone hadn't pointed it out.
