I realize the timing of this is poor given all the recent drow portraits but after two months of working on this painting off and on, now is when I happened to finish. This is Chaz'et, Sword Dancer of Eilistraee. This version of her doesn't have her with her swords, though I did upload a version that does have swords to the Featured Art. And before anyone has a beef about the lack of armor, I painted her as she dresses to worship her goddess, not as she dresses to go fight Evil. ;-) Hope the Vault likes her. Original art.
This is a compilation of the old system into a single score. There were 17 that made this score of 8.06 then rounded to 8.

Most groovy.

Yep, I can see it now. The painting has her ears extending out beyond her hair, while these don't. Definitely an improvement.
I'd also like to say that her hair in the full painting is rather... convenient. Interesting how the ends curl inwards right at the midriff!
Most people's hair isn't that skilled.
:-)

Thought--write to me at the above address and I can send you a before and after. Or you can wait for the full painting, which should be coming up in the Featured Art on the Front Page pretty soon. I haven't changed the ears in that one. It will also be more clear in the full painting how the background integrates with the figure.
Chris--I have a theory that when artists draw faces you can always tell a little something about what the artist herself (or himself) looks like. After all, what face do you see the most often for reference? :-) Since this is drawn entirely out of my head, it will probably have elements of my "hard-wired" sense of porportion that are consistant from one painting to the next. I think one of the challenges of being an artist is to draw someone who looks *nothing* like you at all.
However, I did use myself as reference for a part of the painting that isn't in this portrait. The full painting has Chaz'et holding two swords. I posed with my husband's kendo swords in front of a mirror to get the position and angle on the arms correct.

Excellent picture Gyrfalconthegrey. You promised it to be slinky, and indeed you have delivered!
It's not poor timing at all. If anything it gives these slacked down "drow portraits" a taste of what they should be all about.
I particularly like the lack of metal as I always play mages.
Thanks once again. Just out of curiosity, is this a version of yourself if you were a drow?
Because some of the slight characteristics seem similar to the village girl, which you said was partly based on yourself.
Keep at it! practice makes ... well, you can't really get much better can you?

Hmm, I wish I could see a before and after of the ears (I haven't downloaded it, I'm just looking at the pop-up here). They don't seem as bad as they were before though, but that could be the power of suggestion.
:-)
As for the background, I don't have a problem with it, I think it's fine.

Fine work.
Not too keen on the background. It lacks the same quality of light as the subject matter.
Moody. I like.

Good work! I believe I am looking at the Post-update "ears" and they look fine. I also like the little charm.
Though we HAVE been bombarded with Drow lately, you can Never be too bombarded with good original art. Oh, and speaking for myself, I have no problems with her being in a, um, worshipful state of dress. *ahem

Hello and thanks for the comments. Personally I like long ears on elves, but that doesn't change the fact that you guys were right about the ears on *this* pic being too far forward. I did a quick update. Tell me if you like it better now.

Wow, I like it. Skin is good, but the ears appear to large because they are too far forward on her head (too close to her face). Change the ears by moving them back, maybe half hidden in her hair, and it will be perfect.

Without a doubt one of the best drow picture on the sight hell one of the best pictures on the site period. The skin tone is perfect but I think the post below me is correct her ears remind me of the Record of the Lodus War series where all elves have ears the length of there head.

Very nice!
Now THIS is how to do a really dark skinned drow without just making her a black blob! And she isn't blue either!
I personally would have liked the ears a little smaller, those are approaching bat wing status! But it seems to be the style of late (not just here) that elves have ears that reach almost a foot in the air, so I cannot really blame the artist.
