Description
This script will turn a normal short sword into the weapon Sting from the Lord of the Rings novels if a halfling character equips it. The script can be easily modified to create weapons that 'awaken' in the hands of certain types of PC's. For example, a weapon could appear normal to most players, but once equipped by a druid of a certain level, it could become 'magical.'

Is there are any way to change this script that weapon will react at certian character (name or something)

Thanks for the comments.

1) Several effects are applied for any race that equips the sword, NOT just halflings.

2) You are right. But the script does not run often enough, and getting data from an object is not intensive enough, for that to be concern in real world use. Getting data from a single object is not something I would worry about happening every 10 seconds.

Hopefully you can find a use for the underlying concept of the script for your module. In our module we have several custom weapons using modified versions of this script.

Example: Lathanderite priest praying at dawn gets a Sunburst visual and several buffs. Individualization like this makes players feel the love.

Looking @ the code there is a good chunk of bloat in there that you could trim out. Seeing as it's running a pseudo heartbeat trimming any fat can't hurt.

1. Since your version of sting only works for halflings why not put an else in the racial check that would say run through the stripping of effects and then kick out. That would eliminate 99% of the if iRace==1 lines.

2. Why not just grab the PC's HitDice and apply all effects instead of checking for the HitDice each and every effect? The fewer calls the better. If for some reason you feel an absolute need to have those comparisons then why not store the PC's HitDice in an int. That way you only have to call GetHitDice the one time.

Those are the 2 really big bloak issues I see @ any rate.

All in all a very good conept code though. I think I will base some of my elven equipment code I wanted to play with off of this.

Thanks

Pretty good concept in action. There a few things that could be cleaned up though.
Halflings are not the only race to be able to use sting, that asside though there is a fair bit of bloat in the code. Since this is a pseudo heatbeat script that bloat really should be trimmed out to keep things running smoothly. See my post in the actual thread to find out what they are.

Nice script, but there are a few things wrong.
Halflings have nothing to do with the properties of the weapon. It was forged by Elves, not by Halflings and not for Halflings. So each race could use this sword with the same effect as halflings in your script. Second thing is the fire effect, it's okay but i think the sonic effect was a bit better for that. Better for glowing i think.

I like this weapon so much that I plan to kill the character next time I see him. Did I say that out loud?

This script is *very* cool. I like that the weapons can grow with the user, or have different properties for different races/classes, etc.

I'm the player lucky enough to be the current "owner" of Sting in Geo's Earthspur PW.

This is by far the coolest weapon I've ever had anywhere.

Excellent work!

Yep. it glows when orcs are around.

Posted by wolfjunkie at 2004-06-17 11:44:00
yeah, like he said...
But nevertheless this system could be cool...you could change a bit you could make a weapon that became more powerfull as the paladin lvled up :D

Posted by Excalibur at 2004-06-17 10:38:00
You do realize that Sting isn't magical just in the hands of a halfling, right? That it doesn't glow blue because a halfling is wielding it? The reason it glows blue is if, and only if, there are orcs or goblins nearby, otherwise it is normal. The script is nifty, none-the-less for level based or race based features ...
