As for getting the NPC to do the job, get your PC in motion, click on the chest/whatever (activating the henchman to open it) and immediately move to one side before your henchman can be "blocked." By the time the henchman gets to the container in question, you're already out of their way.
Another common peeve is...
Player (running away from dragon): "Follow me!"
Tommy: "I will follow you and not attack until you tell me otherwise." (Takes two steps, then turns around to engage the enemy.) "Here comes halfling death...!"
Player: "NO! FOLLOW ME!"
Tommy: "I will follow-- Here comes halfling death...!"
(Grisly scene of a halfing death follows.)
Player: "ARGH!!"
