A short orchestral-style piece. It could work as area music for a desert setting or an exotic city, but see what you think. Your comments are welcome. Please let me know if you use this music for anything.
The new version incorporates a few of the commments I received below. The tempo is slighly slower. I also changed a few of the sounds, added more reverb and percussion, and fixed a few missing notes.
Thanks to everyone, and especially Vivienne for getting me to 10 votes - now this submission is "findable" using the Top Rated method of sorting. _________________________ Ninja School -- a short NWN training and adventure module for young players. This is great! For some odd reason, it reminds me of a song in Ocarina of Time..I just can't remember which one. Good job!

Jeez---I wish I hadn't read all the comments before I wrote this---what can I say, I like it just fine. I love the idea of changing up the tunes for dif environments--sooo scaraby scarey! I think its great yr getting such professional feedback from others---my opinion is it has got a good beat and I can dance to it! Yuck-yuck, ha-ha! Seriously, I like it.

The composition and orchestration here is created with craftmanship, and deserves a 10. The only reason not is because of dynamics. peej000, we both need a better sample set! ;-) _________________________ Link

I would suggest doing the reverb in an outside program, the Finale reverb is rather dry. _________________________ Snafe Composed: What is a game without music? Neverending Nights - A NWN Machinima
Thanks Snafe - I responded to your comment on my other submittal, which I saw first, in more detail. I used one of the default reverb settings - something like large hall or church, I can't remember, so there is a fair amount of reverb on - maybe there could be more as you suggest. _________________________ Ninja School -- a short NWN training and adventure module for young players. Very interesting.
The only thing I can see it really needing is some reverb.
People have commented a lot and stated what they think would make it better. My only suggestion is that in the end you decide to do something because you like it.
Keep up the work, and don't stop composing! _________________________ Snafe Composed: What is a game without music? Neverending Nights - A NWN Machinima

It seemed a bit ponderous and melancholy. Even though I like it less, I think it ought be rated higher for being able to evoke such thought and feeling. Good original work!
Clarkycat - I was just trying to point out that you seem to be a very knowledgeable reviewer and that you identified the same issues that were troubling me a little before I uploaded the file. But I will probably just leave it as it is for now. I think music is not completely subjective in that there is an accumulated body of established practices that effect our judgements. Maybe that is a bad thing because all Hollywood soundtracks start sounding the same after a while. _________________________ Ninja School -- a short NWN training and adventure module for young players. There was a piece for a village in TCOAH that used the same theme but with day and night variations. (though I never posted it to the vault - its just on my website).
Its a good idea though if you want to maintain an overall theme for an area but using one musical piece for both time periods doesn't quite fit.
On the comments regarding "me being right" about the lacking rhythm parts in the background - its important to state that music is entirely subjective and any comments I might give you are only opinions. If you agree with them and think that the piece should be altered, fine - fire away and alter the piece. But there's no right and wrong regarding this.
If you're happy how the piece is now, leave it as it is. :)
Thanks FuzzMD - about the horns vs strings, it is true that the strings are pretty much the accompaniment and the melody moves between various woodwind/brass mixes. I am not sure about changing that but if you want to e-mail me through my profile, I could look at doing a custom version for you. Actually, that gives me an idea - having two different versions of the same theme - one for the "day" music and one for the "night" music in an area. Maybe that has been done somewhere but I have not noticed it. If I had to choose I would say the one I posted would be the "day" version. _________________________ Ninja School -- a short NWN training and adventure module for young players. Very interesting... I like that you're making desert music, as I need it. Might want to look into adding more strings and fewer horns, though, though this definitely has a vibe of exploring the dunes at night.
Thanks for the votes and comments, guys. I see you are both prolific and successful contributors to the community.
Clarkycat - your comments are right on - not surpising considering how well you have done on your own music. Before I posted I had thought about slowing the tempo down a little, and in a couple of places I did add some syncopated underpinning for a sense of rhythm - probably should have done something like that more. You are right about the string volume too. _________________________ Ninja School -- a short NWN training and adventure module for young players. I haven't posted a review in a long time (very bad of me) but I thought I should start it up again, so here goes!
I like the melody and supporting parts. Its also pretty well mixed (there are parts though where the strings could be a little more subdued, but it's not that significant).
To me though, it sounds like something is missing. You've got the tempo running at what....120 / 130 bpm? The melody feels "pushy" in places, but there's no rhythmic parts to support this. This doesn't mean you need percussion in there - you could have an arpeggiated string part, a tuba playing staccato or some other such instrument that could just sit right at the back and pull the piece along.
Fixed a couple of things since the first upload. Only one download had occured at that time. _________________________ Ninja School -- a short NWN training and adventure module for young players. Missing Persons -- a short single-player NWN adventure for levels 4-5. My music submissions
