A short medley of two traditional Irish tunes, Drowsy Maggie (reel) and St. Patrick's Day (jig) that I recorded using Finale and the Garritan Personal Orchestra that comes with it. Lively music for for a tavern or outdoor fair, I think. If community members are interested, I could lengthen the medley or upload more individual tunes so you can create your own "Celtic Jukebox."
Updated version addresses some of the comments below. I randomized some of the note durations and velocities slightly, detuned the instruments slightly, and added more reverb and a slight echo chorus effect.

This is a very nice authentic sounding track! The transition between the 2 songs is great, but I feel that the gap is too long..maybe? It may just be me though...great track nonetheless!

Cool reel...good sounds, good length

A lovely arrangement! Could do with a little room though. But that´s an easy task for those who will use this one in a mod. :-) _________________________ Link
Thanks Tezoa, I am glad you have a use for it. I would be interested in creating more like it, and now you have provided me with a specific reason to do it. Feel free to e-mail me through my Neverwinter Vault profile if you want to discuss what you are looking for in more detail. _________________________ Ninja School -- a short NWN training and adventure module for young players. Peeej, that's perfect, I was looking for some music for my "celtic campaign" and I will use your medley. If you have anything else, and most particularly with drums ("tambourine") and flute, I would be VERY interested, and VERY happy ! ;-) I have a few tunes in mind but no time to play, record and arrange them :-(

you'll probably want the quantizing on when you're playing in - but does it have a view where you can edit notes similar to the Key Editor in Cubase? (it has a keyboard down the side and long strips for the notes in that part). I find setting the quantize resolution on here really high then tweaking the starting times of notes by hand can help achieve that live feel.
Thanks ClarkyCat - I can't take credit for the melodies because they are traditional but I am glad you like it. I tried a couple of things to make it sound more natural - I played many of the passages on keyboard to get different note velocities, used short glissandi in on instrument but not the other to create a little out of tune sound that resolves. Also, I put ornamentation in one part and not the other. But I am new to Finale and could not figure out how to keep it from quantizing my notes exactly to the nearest eight note when I entered the notes in real time using a keyboard. So I probably either have to get better at using Finale or get an independent sound library and use a sequencing program to get some of the effects you mentioned. _________________________ Ninja School -- a short NWN training and adventure module for young players. Ooh, additionally - you could up the room reverb on the drum - but just a little, you don't want to drown the mix in it! :)

My bad - i've been extremely busy with work so haven't had a chance to listen and rate this piece.
I've given a 9.75 - here's why (btw - I think it could possibly be the highest score i've ever given a piece of music on the Vault!):
Compositionally it's really good, really fitting for the setting etc. The mixing is also pretty good - you've got the right balance between all the parts.
Don't worry about the reverb - afterall, once you've placed this within a tavern in a game and you've got ambient noises over the top it'll fit just fine.
There are some things you could do to improve the sound though. Try setting up a tape delay (very quiet though) for the main instruments (not the drum - but could include the bass) to simulate the delay you'd get in a confined room. This should make it sound more lively.
Also - you can try altering some of the timings of the notes for one instrument when two are playing the same part - this will also make it sound much more natural (because most people will be slightly out when playing together).
Another thing - and this really is if you want to go crazy - is insert "bum" notes on fast bits on the flute / piccolo and slight slurs in parts of the violin. The best way with the flute / piccolo is to pick places where the player would have to move their fingers the most - these parts if someone is a little late they'll get a nice high pitched whistle out of the instrument. Just play a high, out of key note, keep it kindof quiet (don't bring it too much to the front of the mix) and try mixing it into the note it's next to.
Anyway - the last point really is if you want to nitpick! :)
SpeakingBeast - thanks, I'll take that as a compliment even though a lot of things can sound good after a few mugs of fine ale ;-) Perhaps the corrolary is also true in that a lot of beverages can taste good after a fine song, who knows? _________________________ Ninja School -- a short NWN training and adventure module for young players. This is an excellent piece - I could certainly find myself dancing to this after a few mugs of fine ale. ;)
Great music, friend - keep up the awesome work!

Ah yes, I use finale 2008 and link EWQLSO Silver through the VST instruments. I then save it as a wav file, put it into a wav editor and make things fit more smoothly.
Please, don't stop writing. I would love to hear some more of your work. _________________________ Snafe Composed: What is a game without music? Neverending Nights - A NWN Machinima
Thanks Snafe, glad you like it. I used Finale notation software and the VST instruments from the Garritan Personal Orchestra that come with it. There is actually some reverb on for a small room - maybe it could use a little more - initially I had too much on and the melody seemed to get lost at times. I used violin, flute, and piccolo (to simulate a tinwhistle) along with guitar, bass, and drum (to simulate a bodhran) and tried to copy the style of traditional irish music that I have CDs, where various combinations of instruments play the melody mostly in unison or octaves.
By the way, thanks for all your great contributions - to be honest I never paid much attention to the music submissions unless they were in a module, until I started doing it myself - but I have been going back and listening to them and your stuff really stands out. PS- I am a trombonist too - although I am an amateur and did not study music in college beyond a few elective courses, I still find a lot of opportunities to play locally. _________________________ Ninja School -- a short NWN training and adventure module for young players. I like this song a lot. It would make a perfect tavern setting.
Again, I think it needs some good reverb. Nothing over the top, just something that would fit a small room.
I tried composing tavern music, but never really succeeded. What software are you using to create this? _________________________ Snafe Composed: What is a game without music? Neverending Nights - A NWN Machinima

So fun! And I like how you blended into the second song to mellow it out.
