We use a -10 bleed system. Ours is unique in that it announces each round if a player has lost or gained hit points, and also announces if the player has died. No wasting heal kits because you don't know!

Description
This is a NW2 PW set in The Forgotten Realms. We feature:
Over 75 areas
Over 30 quests
Functional arena area
Completely custom loot system
Our unique token based item enchantment system
Rogue friendly traps and locks with XP
Alignment specific areas
and much more...
We are a Role Play focused server, though we welcome all play styles. What is fun for one is not fun for all, so as long as it does not stomp on another's good time, we invite you to play however you think is fun.
We feel players should be more than character sheets and should be able to shape the world. From things as simple as having the ability to purchase armor custom tailored with a history and look unique to your PC, to holding positions of power, Jewel of Calimshan will be a world where your PC can truly be an individual.
We also have a unique loot system. Rather then hoping you find an item your PC can use, we use a token system. You find various magical tokens that you can turn in to various NPCs to create your item. For example, if you find a 'low-magic ranged weapon' token, you can bring a ranged weapon of your choice to the blacksmith and use the token to add a low magic enhancement from the list he provides for that kind of token. Low magic choices would include things like +1, or 1d4 added damage, or a +3 skill bonus. The higher magic the token, the more properties you can add to a max of 3 properties. There is also a limit to the value of the properties. Please see our site for more specific information.
If you are interested in joining a growing team and have a "For the player, By the player" attitude, I want to hear from you.

JoC is a great roleplaying server with DM's and staff that are extremely friendly and helpful.

Jewel of Calimshan (JoC) is a well thought out and developed world and nice in that it portrays a typically ignored area of Faerun. There are static quests that you can do, you can just log on and grind, or you can interact with others if you need your RP fix. The staff here really means it when they say to play how you want, as long as it does interfere with someone elses idea of fun. There are those that log on just to grind through levels in what appears to be a mad rush to level 30, but most of the players really prefer Role Play over grinding. Many even RP the grinding (when not off by themselves) which really makes it much less tedious. Its a good community with friendly players and staff that help each other out. There have been a few of those types that havent played well with others, and they have quickly shown themselves for what they are and been booted. It speaks well for this server that even without an application process the number of troublemaker types getting online here has been fairly low, and they tend not to last long.
The Good:
The World has a good and solid foundation but it cant quite be called highly polished, yet. The foundation they have laid is solid with NPCs that give quests or information, each with their own unique attitude. There is an abundance of different types of shops and the streets in most wards are fairly populated. A good balance seems to have been struck for giving the city a populated feel without degrading performance. The setting is rich with potential and I hope the designers/scripters take advantage of this, as they have mentioned that intent, with future buildouts.
The staff is open to player owned and controlled businesses. For those that have a merchant oriented character in mind this will be a big draw. For those more comfortable as adventurers those player merchants with crafting ability will probably provide access to some unique items that would otherwise be much more difficult to obtain.
The loot system is amazing; tokens instead of items may be dropped/found which allows the players to customize equipment they can actually use. So instead of always finding +2 long swords, you might find a broken or worn sword/axe/staff that still has enough magic left that it can be used to enchant the Falchion, Battle Axe or whatever weapon your character actually uses. While the components and availability of drops and chests are randomized there seems to be just as much chance of getting a token as an enchanted item. This token system is applied to all items which can be equipped.
Travel within the city itself has been addressed in a unique fashion. In addition to some of the normal ATs (Area Transitions), one can also use street signs to travel between the wards of the city. This really adds to the immersion factor when traveling within the city.
The staff seems to genuinely be interested in player feedback and to make changes/adjustments. Of course not every suggestion or idea gets implemented but at least players know their voices are heard and suggestions considered.
File downloads for the server can be done using Worldgate and downloads of the individual .pwc and .hak files are also maintained for those of use who want/require it.
The Not so Good:
Throughout the Beta phase there were some stability issues with the server randomly crashing but things have improved recently so theyve hopefully squashed whatever bug that was.
Intermittent use of DMFI; throughout Beta this was occasionally blamed for the random crashes. It could very well be the culprit due to some unforeseen conflict however this is a valuable tool, for both DMs and players, which should be standard for any Persistent World.
There is a lack of custom content created by the community at large. While it was understandable to want to keep the .hak files needed to a minimum during initial testing, more should have been added in for compatibility testing during the Beta phase (IMO).
DM coverage is minimal at best. DMs are difficult to find and good ones are even rarer still, but an absence of active and involved DMs can be detrimental to a server. I know the staff is looking for more people to take on the DM role but until the ranks of DMs fills out some this will probably be one of the biggest drawbacks to the server.
There is a bit of an unpolished feel to the world. Granted many servers go live prematurely and in a lot worse shape than this one but its the little things like lighting, consistency between areas, how Cannon is the setting and the people in it.
Leveling is a little fast for my personal tastes but overall fairly consistent. Getting that first 6000XP is easy for any character but ECL and non-melee characters tend to hit a flat spot in the level up curve there, having a party to buffer them is very helpful. You can level these characters it just takes more care if youre alone. On the other end of the spectrum once you get into the higher levels you never get the feeling of having a truly powerful character because the power level of the spawns are based on the level(s) of the character(s) in the area. While this does make sure you are always challenged it can also be a bit disheartening when goblins can slug it out with a level 30 character. I like that there is no level cap on this server, personally I hate the idea of intentionally limiting a player, I think any server that supports levels higher than 15 or so, and especially Epic levels, should have areas dedicated to these high level characters. Such an area may be planned by the staff, which would be nice, but it isnt currently available.
The forums have some oddities about them as well. The first is that its a bit difficult at first to get used to the path links being at the bottom of threads. Most forums list them at the top and while it actually makes sense to display them at the bottom it takes a bit to get used to. Theres a personal gallery where users can upload pictures, which is nice, but users dont seem to be able to later remove them (permissions error). Recently the forums have been subjected to a cleaning, assumedly in preparation of going live, but instead having an archive for the old posts or creating a separate area for the Beta phase forums, any post that met specific criteria was just deleted. Though I understand why it was done my personal feeling is that a lot of good information was lost as well as what could have been considered clutter. There is an extremely low threshold (approx 192kb) for attachment/PM folder size. Again understandable but very low compared to most other forums. Additionally it seems an error message is received and PMs are not delivered if it would exceed the threshold for the recipients folders but no distinction is made within the error messages displayed.
To conclude, I am not on the staff and dont help to financially support the cost of the maintaining this world so I really dont have a right to complain, and Im not. I can only present the pros and cons as I see them; and I can make suggestions and/or requests which so far theyve been really good at listening to and considering them. This is a warm, welcoming and relaxed community with the emphasis on fun rather than strict adherence to a play style. Theyre just now going live so dont expect them to be as polished or have as large a player base as a server thats been live for a year or more. Just remember that those servers started out just like this one has; as a dream, an idea thats taken shape and evolved. With its solid foundation and devotion displayed by the staff to date this server has the potential to truly become a Jewel, as the name implies.

Very enjoyable RP in a FR area that's under-represented in NWN
