Description
Two japanese weapons for your oriental module.

Both have a lot of history, you can search on wikipedia about them.

I'm just new using 3ds max and other modeling programs, comments are welcome and votes also, but have that in mind.

Note by Ankhalas from SDJ project.

These look excellent. I'm starting an oriental-style campaign and being limited to the katana (and with some plain renaming, the chokuto, yami and tanto) just isn't good enough. These are definately a Must Have for any such campaign.

How do I get the Override to work.

Posted by cogwheel at 2008-03-16 14:56:29
The_Mufflon, "ninjatos", as modern media calls them, definitely existed. Ninjas in feudal Japan used shortened swords. That is fact. The blades were mostly straight, but still retained a slight curve... and broadly speaking, that's the *minor* detail Hollywood got wrong.

But that relatively tiny and unimportant aesthetic difference really isn't enough to justify you coming into this perfectly fine nwvault contribution's comments section and being a huge lamer. Go be a pompous pseudo-intelligent internet-nerd somewhere else.

Plus .5 for putting up the override version.
This is great work. My only real complaint is that it appears to me that my character is holding the ninjato sideways. Shouldn't the sharp part of the blade be facing the ground while walking. When attacking it looks right but when standing idle it doesn't look right to me. Just a minor detail though. Doesn't matter that much. Keep up the good work.

Is there anyway you could make an override version of this?

Posted by The_Mufflon at 2007-12-29 16:53:58    Voted 7.50 on 12/27/07
To reiterate: No, ninjas did not use short, straight edged swords, which is the way ninjato are being described in popular culture today.

And secondly: No, ninjas did most likely not wear black. The idea that they did is generally believed to have originated from the period dramas in Edo (which is also where the name "ninja" orginated but that's another story), where the stage crew wore all black.

When the scriptwriters were first introduced the ninjas into thier scripts they wanted to make clear to the audience that they were very stealthy. Thus they had them dressed in black, like the stage crew, which the audience knew were supposed to be "invisible".

I think the hand should grip closer to the hilt(protection) in the Nodachi. Just an opinion, yet it's a great work, keep at it! :D

Always great to see quality work show up,please keep it up and welcome to the comunity. There can never be enough real weapon modellers working.

Ill skip the whole historical discussion as this is indeed a game and despite how mutch you try to please historical purists it will be very difficult. (not to say you shouldnt always do your homework and gather as mutch visual information as you can about the weapons you wish to adress). but never let that discourage you.

About the history of the ninjato. Yes, from what I know Shinobigatana, Ninjaken or Ninjato has different tsuba styles. The one with the form of a square is original from hollywood...or another place, but not japanese. Ninjas used short katanas for close combat in interiors and also to hide them faster. They usually had the same saya as a katana to confuse their enemies while withdrawing the ninjato, because this weapon is faster than the other one to withdraw. Also people think that they used that type of saya to hide their true sword.

I´ve read a lot of teories about that on internet and books.

I just took the tsuba with the form of a square because is the one that looks quite different to a katana.

So peace ;) only ninja know the correct style used in feudal japan.

For the ones that like this topic. It isnt clear also that they used black clothes to hide because there`s no authentic written accounts where ninja are actually described like that. Usually they appear to have disguised themselves to blend in with the enemy...a lot related with ninjas is a mistery, so don`t argue for something that nobody knows for sure :)

If there´s anyone here who really loves weapons...just see pc games and tell me if all the weapons that appear in rpg are well made. You can start looking to nwn2 weapons (short swords, spears,)...but that´s another history ;)

lgjoyn :

I never added a hak to the OC and don´t know if it can be done without errors in game. The OC uses various modules I think, so the hak should be attached to all them, maybe using an override would be better.

You should search about that at nwn2bioware forums, I am sure that someone asked that before.

thanks...IT WORKED!!! the mod is super!!!

Igjoyn:

To install a hak file follow the next steps:

1) Put sdj_japanese_weapons_01.hak to you My Documents/Neverwinter Nights 2/hak folder. Open your module in Nwn2 Toolset

2)View>>Module Properties. On the right side you will see the "table" of properties of your module. There, in the group Misc, you will see a line named "Hak Paks". Click that line and then "..."

3) A new window will appear. Click on Add then to File name and "..." again. Select my hak (sdj_japanese_weapons_01.hak) and Ok. Hak installed. If you need to add more haks to your module, you just have to repeat the process.

For the blueprints (.erf file) select File, import and select SDJ_Japanese_weapons.erf file.

Actually, Kurogo, you are correct. The ninjato has been around for as long as the ninjas (or shinobi no mono, if you prefer that) that used them. But since no ninjas ever used them, well... I suggest you look past what ever fanboy-dom or japanophilia that possessed you to come to the defence of this fictional weapon and actually find a credible source on japanese weaponry.

Nice models for the swords, though.

still same problem...don't know how to install a hak file...still new to the toolset...

Igjoyn :

I just tried the .erf file in another computer and works. I don't know which problem you have there, but I can tell you a way to solve it.

You can create your own blueprints. Just assign my hak to your module and create two new blueprints. Ninjato appearance can be done creating a new short sword weapon and selecting in the parts of the model, the number 50. For the Nodachi you can try the same, but using greatsword weapon type and in the model parts, number 51.

Creating by yourself the blueprints should work, if the problem is still there I just don't know how to solve it :(

looks cool...but when i use the erf file it is invisable...is there a fix for this...again i think this is very cool and can't wait to see more...

Posted by Ankhalas at 2007-12-27 05:17:16
Not my fault I think, I'm using the short sword and giant sword animations of the game. I just oriented the weapons to attack well, if I rotate them to look better while defending or standing no good results are shown while attacking. If there's no way to adjust the weapons in both situations nothing can be done...if it's possible just tell me because as I said before I'm new doing weapons (not only in nwn2).

On the other hand, just see other works, the weilding of the weapons never look exactly as in real life. Nothing can be perfect ^^.

I invite also other modelers to work in this field. I already made a jitte, naginata, daikatana, wakizashi, jumonji yari and a kunai, I will upload them to nwvault if I see that my work is useful.

Thanks for the comments, see you soon in the next japanese placeables hak.

Looks cool, but I couldn't help noticing that the blade edge seems to be pointing to the side in your screen shots. It should be pointing forward when in combat or to the ground when idle.

Looks good! Can't wait for when there is enough content to make an entire japanese mod. BTW, don't listen to Mufflon, I don't think he even knows what he is talking about. The shinobigatana, aka ninjato, has been around almost as long as the shinobi who used them.

Posted by The_Mufflon at 2007-12-26 20:43:15    Voted 7.50 on 12/27/07
Technically the ninjato isn't a japanese weapon, since it's entierly fictatious... And it really doesn't have a lot of history, since there is no reference of it before the ninja craze of the 80's.
