I was playing in one of my favorite PWs when I became over encumbered by my gear. I found myself wishing I had an animal such as a mule to help carry the extra goods I had.
while thinking along these lines I realized that they could also be used by traveling merchants and teamsters.
My suggestion is to create animated animals such as hoeses, mules, cattle, dogs, and oxen which follow their owners.
They could have a limited inventory and encumberance numbers appropriate to their strength scores.

I'm a pack rat. I measure my progress by how much loot/gold my gal has collected as well as how many side quests I've solved. Other people are free to measure themselves by, say, how little time it takes to hack and slash through the main story line. I'm content to play the game in massively single player mode.
You can create your hero with any number of Bags of Holding with, say, Vordun's Hero Creator, and bypass the item stripping at the beginning of many modules with somebody's (sorry I can't remember whose) Universal Companion Database. But a four-legged companion who isn't supposed to participate in conversations would be nice.
A pack mule would also make a mage more easily playable in hero-only modules. If you forget to keep a creature or undead summoned, you frequently get overrun before you can get second spell off.
