Description
The Queen of Lies, inspired by the Grimm brothers fairy tales (and, to be quite honest, by the movie as well).

Your and your brother's hobby is collecting fairytales. This night, you were camping out in the forest, and your brother was just about to read you the tale he had recently recorded...

In this module you will play predefined story characters most of the time, in essence reenacting, or rather re-*creating*, the tale (this means that your character build doesn't really matter gameplay-wise, although for consistency sake I would recommend a low-level non-magic user over, say, a demigod sorcerer). It's highly non-linear, there are 12 main story variations, and each of them can end in several ways. On top of that, it uses non-chronological narrative structure, so prepare to be surprised a bit :)

Nice little mod. I particularly liked the number of possible endings and replayability.

I don't think that I can understand this type of mod

Posted by Shoelip at 2007-11-08 02:23:40
Hm, well actually I think it was just some weirdness with my computer overloading or something. I managed to play it fine the third time.

Posted by Shoelip at 2007-11-06 02:25:36
This mod sounded interesting, and what I played of it was in fact interesting. However, right when, as the second brother, I clicked on the cottage door, the game froze. Then it went to a blue dos screen telling me there was something wrong with the IDE drives and that it had to dump the virtual memory and reset the computer. When I tried to start my computer again it froze for several minutes in the startup process while trying to detect the IDE drives and when it finally unfroze it said I had none.

I finally had to reset my motherboard settings and then unp;ug all my IDE cable and plug them back in before the computer would start properly again. I started the game again and loaded my save from just after the start of Christian's part and entered the cottage with no trouble. When I started the conversation it froze for a few minutes, then worked again. Then when I said that I had had an easy time getting there it froze again and sent me to the same blue screen.

Resetting had the same effect. Once again I had to reset my motherboard and unplug my IDE cables and put them back in again to get the computer to start.

Any suggestions?

Interesting story, liked the multiple out comes. Felt more like watching a story than playing a game though.

I think the intelligence and creativity of this mod deserve high praise.
It obviously isn't for everyone, but what is?

Posted by msnevil1 at 2007-06-15 08:15:16    Voted 7.00 on 06/15/07
Played it once, and killed all the PC's. Personally, Its a miss on me. I don't like adventure games. Still it has some merit for those who like such things.

7, Deserves a good look from adventure gamers.

For obvious reasons, I held off posting whilst the contest was running.

Anyhow, firstly as a fellow builder, I must commend you on your scripting. Most of the entries lacked much if any custom scripts, but that certainly wasn't the case here. I especially liked the way one area was used to cut down on loading screens.

The story was a little short, but there were loads of routes to play though and a nice twist at the end, so that made up for it. The final fight was fun, but the few other combats were a little uni-dimensional. The areas looked decent, but no real 'wow' moments.

Overall, a great contribution given the short deadlines. I rank it 7.0 worth a look and certainly fun for a short diversion.

Well-scripted but short and somewhat uninspiring.

Not my cup of tea, but deserving of a good score.

I second what GreasyDogMeat said.

But I can't recomand it to everyone because I'm sure not everyone would enjoy such a Mod.

Overall, I really enjoyed this module. It is one of the more unique and imaginative submissions and I enjoyed how different dialogue choices, truth or lies and survival or death affected how the story flowed and ended.

The only complaint I had was it was a bit too short, but the replayability made up for this IMHO.

Posted by Adoniram at 2007-05-12 14:40:10    Voted 7.50 on 09/25/10
The camera thing is not a bug, I just found no better way of centering the view on a new character in each act :(

A single run through the module is indeed quite short (though the final battle might take several tries if you are left with only one character). That's because there's no "filler" gameplay in it, it's basically a concentrated story, which is deliberate (not the least because the entire mod was done in 3 weeks, I learned about the contest a bit late). *Every* choice you make matters (though, admittedly, some matter more then the others)

Very short module, though I don't know how much would it last if played with different dialogue options. I also dislike playing with set characters and not my own, but since this module seems to be more like an interactive story than anything else, it was inevitable. Some parts of the story were really interesting, but the end felt like it resolved too quickly. And somewhy the camera mode changed with character transition. Was this some bug from my side or your programming I don't know.

Glad you liked it, Cain. I knew it would be hit and miss depending on the person.

As for the crash, I had it about 80% of the time when two characters were polymorphed in one dialog node, but it seemed to have gone when I moved it to separed nodes. Apparently not quite. I suppose it's an engine bug; too late to search for a workaround, unfortunately.

Another issue is that after reloading the small stream is rotated (or more precisely, it is rotated initially - a new 1.05 feature I think - but loses it after reloading)

I really liked this. It crashed out once ona character transform, but reloading made everything run smoothly through several variations. Very clever, and very Grimm.

Posted by Adoniram at 2007-05-01 15:21:34    Voted 7.50 on 09/25/10
Correct, you don't play "your" character (it's actually stated in the module description). At least not directly. First of all, I think building a character for anything that lasts less than say 5 hours is a wasted effort on the player's side, and second, which is more important, your character is *the narrator*, who *builds* the story of the three brother and The Queen of Lies.

Posted by thasic at 2007-04-30 18:25:09    Voted 5.00 on 04/30/07
The mod was really very, very short. The story was interesting but you don't play the character you make up at all. You are forced to play the NPCs the modder set up. Also, sometimes it was a little hard to follow what was going on because you kept jumping from character to character. Not a bad effort and worth a look.

Another note: please don't expect a flashy rollercoaster ride from this module. First and foremost, it's an experiment in interactive narrative; several replays are highly recommended (it's not that long really), don't be afraid to try different things (that includes dying!). At least make sure you get to the final Queen's flashback :)

This module did not quite work for me but it is alright. Thanks for putting it up for us to play with. One issue I had was that I started the module last night, decided to get some rest, then reloaded and found my character invisible and unable to do anything...so I had to start over again. Kind of odd but likely due to how you've scripted the beginning. Thanks again.
