Ranked #4 in Obsidian mod contest. Updated with new ending! Play as twins of ANY name!
Mask of the Betrayer expansion not required.
-----
Taking a winding path through a dark forest, you come to the Tower of the White Wizard rising majestically before you. As you enter, you are swept onto a quest that will spell the fate of a whole community. Will you succeed, and get out with the tale you know will make you famous throughout Faerun?
-----
This mod was originally designed (in 26 days) for the first Obsidian mod contest held in May. The contests theme was The Grimm Tales. This mod like all contest mods, is a relatively short one, one that makes for a good evenings diversion from playing some of the larger mods out there.
-----
The tales known as the Grimm Tales, which are some of the best known folk tales in the world, were collected (and enhanced) by two brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, during their travels in 19th century Germany.
In Daark Twins, you play as one half of Faeruns answer to the Grimm Brothers, as they hunt for the tale that would later make their fame from the Sword Coast all the way to Thay. This tale is known as The Wizard and his Creation.
The Wizard and his Creation, like most popular tales, tells more than it seems to do on the surface. And like these types of tales tend to do, it holds a moral, one you may or may not agree with.
-----
FEATURES
Appealing exterior and interior areas, non-traditional combat and gameplay, original creatures, amusing dialogue, official campaign player death system, a devious (but optional) gnomish puzzle, at least two possible end games, and a very special guest star.
-----
NOTICE
In spite of the new features in this version (see VERSION NOTES below), I still recommend you play with the included Jakob Daark character file, or with a level 5 human.

THE STORY FROM THE BEGINNING
One morning, one much like any other for them, the Daark Twins, tellers and gatherers extraordinaire of Faeruns most mysterious, most fantastic tales, set out from the hamlet of Anaatnas on the north-western edge of Cormyr's Hullack Forest, bound for the Tower of the White Wizard.
Popular tales in this part of the land vary in their accounts of the White Wizard, but they all hint at strange happenings in the Tower. No one the Twins had met in and around Anaatnas had actually been to the Tower or seen it firsthand. While the Daark Twins do not know what to expect, they are convinced their visit will yield a tale to remember and tell, again and again and again.
Finally, after wandering through the darkening woods, at times taking one path of a fork only to come back to it half a league later, they came to a clearing.
Across the clearing, standing next to a small cabin, they saw a bent, old woman beckoning to them.

THE MEANING OF THE STORY
The main story is a loose allegory about the creation of the NWN2 game itself, the conditions of its initial release and the community that has formed around it. There are many references to these aspects of the game, some obscure, others much less subtle. The ending moral could be taken as a commentary on the game (not from me though ;) ) and should be familiar to many NWN2 fans
A copy of NWN2 is required to play and enjoy, as well as a taste for a bit of (very affectionate) irreverence...:). That said, the module can be enjoyed in its own right, without comprehension of the references it contains.

VERSION NOTES
V1.21:
- Fixed a bug that prevented end game from firing in specific circumstances.
V1.2:
- New, more challenging, more climactic ending.
- Play with any character, with any last name (level 5 recommended): your twin will be of the opposite sex and take your last name. Conversations will reflect your names properly.
- UNSUPPORTED FEATURE: If you decide to play with an elf, dwarf, halfling, half-orc, half-elf or gnome then your twin will take on the appearance of the base race of your PC ( e.g. drow will get a basic elf twin. Sorry, outsiders not supported.). This adjusts the appearance of the twin only, not its stats sheet. Current functions make more precise matching too burdensome.
- A few other tweaks, updates and enhancements.
V1.1:
- Added companion conversation and diary-type journal
- fixed the Wizard conversation failed to advance quest status bug, otherwise known as the Starwars bug (named in honor of the one who first informed me of it :) )
- made a few other behind-the-scenes modifications and other small enhancements

I HOPE YOU HAVE FUN PLAYING THIS MOD. PLEASE COME BACK AND VOTE ONCE YOU ARE DONE. THANKS!
Nadri: I would think getting the Staff of Disruption would have been tougher than taking down the Creation! :)Congratulations on both! Glad you had a good time! _________________________ E.C.Patterson Gaming Parents Studios Trinity, the NWN2 adventure : Download now.

It was a fun way to occupy some time. I loved the "satire" against buggy games. Just one thing: I found the final battle with the Creation, even though I had that handy lightning staff, way too tough for a mage and a bard.

Hi redqueen, Glad you had a good time! That?s what it?s all about! I think your interpretation of the reaction of the old woman and her ?family? is absolutely plausible. One fears what one doesn?t know, or what rumor says should be feared, or at least approached with some degree of wariness. As well, I think the old woman is trying to encourage the Twins not to proceed, and to spend the night in her forest cottage? for what purpose, who can tell? ;) As for the Pit fight, yes, your companion is supposed to jump in there too. Were you playing v1.2 or v1.1? I tried to make the jump more failsafe in v1.2. I?d appreciate if you could let me know so I could troubleshoot further if need be. Thanks! _________________________ E.C.Patterson Gaming Parents Studios Trinity, the NWN2 adventure : Download now.

Really enjoyable. I LOVE the part with Golden Jack and the lake walkers--the water was really spectacular, added a lot to the atmosphere. I wish it'd been longer, but I understand the contest and RL constraints. I'm not sure I understand why the old woman and her family were so against the twins going to the tower--was that just a nod to dracula and other stories where the townspeople fear the castle/tower/haunted house etc? Also, were both of the twins supposed to be in the arena for the fight with...er, that golden golem? Because only my PC ended up in the arena. Although, when I ran to the corner and had my companion summon a wolf, the wolf could still wound the golem, so I got past it fairly easily. _________________________ They say the Prince of Darkness is a gentleman, and as it turns out, they're right. E.C.Patterson: I can't believe I forgot to vote and comment. I played through again to refresh my memory and I'm very glad I did! You have a great deal of talent in building areas, I to stood at the lake looking at the castle :) It's especially cool at night. Normally I would be ranting by now after having a prefab character forced on me, but I came to like Jakob so I'll just say thanks for a well thought out prefab character. I had forgotten how much fun puzzle solving can be. :) All in all: This is a fine example of what one very talented person can do with the tool set in a very limited amount of time. If the areas looked this good, and the scripting this ingenious with such little time.......I can't wait to see what you'll come up with when you are without time restraints. Bravo! _________________________ Help is good when asked for, Better when needed. Gaming Parents Studios

Hi Wyrin: I'm honoured you had a chance to play my mod. Thanks for the comments. I look forward to playing Dark Avenger myself! The new version of Daark Twins I uploaded since you played has a new more climactic ending, which should go some way hopefully in adressing the issue you, Berliad and others had with the way the mod ended. _________________________ E.C.Patterson Gaming Parents Studios Trinity, the NWN2 adventure : Download now.

7 - Very Good, Deserves a Look. Excellent mod for a change of pace, with some very well scripted puzzles and scenes (+0.5) After playing some H&S mods, this was a great change of pace, and showed a lot of thought behind it. I agree with Berliad, that the mod felt like there could hve been a lot more to come - but I know that's likely due to the constraints of the contest - but its a testament to the builder for pulling it off with this style of module. Just makes me wonder what the Garden of all Evils could be/have been... :) _________________________ Wyrin Legacy of White Plume Mountain - A Faerun sandbox classic D&D adventure! Wyrin's NWN2 blog

Thanks everyone for playing and leaving comments. Aredhel371 : Thanks for giving Jakob a home! As you know, he and Whilma are orphans so this is much appreciated :) Lariam: thanks for detailed comment and for those good finds. I?ll make the corrections in the upcoming v1.2. Yes, I am indeed working with Jackyo123 on NHiN part 2 right now, doing some scripting. I can say the mod is shaping up to be quite a ride! I have no intention at this time of making other adventures with Jakob and Whilma. So please do feel free to take him on some exciting adventures around Faerun! _________________________ E.C.Patterson Gaming Parents Studios Trinity, the NWN2 adventure : Download now.
