The z08_akachi_finale.DLG found in the Z_X1 module for MotB, with the "not" condition for one PC node removed. This is intentionally vague--see spoilers below for more. Suffice to say I've ensured a specific convo option that should have been available to everyone IS available, without changing any of the original writing.
<SPOILERS>
I found it counter to RP that after defeating the Faceless Man, the player's option to "bind the Faceless Man in your soul/accept his fate as your own" doesn't appear at all if you found all three Mask fragments. Even if you drop the Mask before entering the final area, you're only allowed to 1) call on the Red Woman 2) devour Akachi after defeating him, because the fragments are checked with a global int. Some characters, I think, would prefer to make the sacrifice than go back home after all these epic proportions.

This dlg is critical as it determines the PC's fate in the denouement. It's a painfully simple fix (literally deleting one script) but I've posted it here so others don't have to go into the Toolset.
Download the DLG file and drop it into My Documents>Neverwinter Nights 2>override.
I guess you found the Mask too XD That ending is just...ehh. The absolute opposite of catharsis, for me anyway.
I've heard of Requiem. Good idea, that. Hope all your present writing isn't driving you up a wall, and if you still need someone for text-to-dlg work, I'm perfectly willing.
I *knew* I should have downloaded it for my first play-through. I think I am going to upload it tomorrow, and replay the final battle to see if I can get a better ending. The one I got was completely unsatisfying. _________________________ Joinable NPCs in IWD2. I'm *not* kidding!
Yeah, it's my favorite too. First time I played through I completely missed one of the fragments (those wells, god) so I got the heroic ending; but second time I had the Mask and sort of wished I hadn't. :)
Definitely the most poignant as you said, but also the most fitting, I think-considering all the time spent talking about losing oneself behind the 'mask' of a role.
Nicely done. Seeing as both times I've played through this amazing game, I'd collected all three mask fragments each time, I never even knew of the third dialogue option.
It was nice to play through it; I'd probably say it was my favourite of the three outcomes. There is something more heroic and poignant about the tale where this now legendary hero gave himself and his life on the material plane up to stifle the curse.
edit-for GreasyDogMeat: tested the dlg again in response to your question. This file will work even if you're already IN the final battle--as long as it's in place before you deal the final blow to Akachi. you'll still need to save and exit before the game will recognize the file is present, though.
I suggest that you keep it here. I put Requiem (which is a similar dialogue modification, with Ammon Jerro) into Other and nobody really knows about it. :) _________________________ Joinable NPCs in IWD2. I'm *not* kidding!
To Hagaar: Yeah it probably is...sorry about that. Never posted on the Vault before, haha.
To GreasyDogMeat: it'll work as long as you drop it into override before the fight. obviously close out MotB first, then open your game after it's in place. standard stuff.
I think that this is in the wrong place. But this DOES seem great! _________________________ We are all born ignorant, but one must work to remain ignorant.
