The Price of Honor
By Dennis and Jon Graf (from a short story by Jon Graf)
[email protected] For those of you who have not been following the development of this mod two years ago (is it really that long) I lost my son. We had always talked about doing a mod, but never got around to it. This mod is a fulfillment of sorts of that shared dream. The details are in the players guide pdf that accompanies the mod. Today is Jons birthday, so I thought it appropriate as a release date,
The mod is based on a short story by my son Jonathan. There is much of him in this mod - and more than a little of me. Changes have been made to the story to make it work as a game and as it began to take shape, I became aware that some of Jons real story - in particular our relationship - was also finding its way into the plot. SYNOPSIS: (no spoilers) - The PC is currently looking for work in Fenhollow, a small settlement on the edge of the waste lands. He has been away from his clan for 10 years following a falling out with his father. It is the time of the Maerond - a "fight to the death" competition sponsored by a mysterious group of guardians known as the Dwarinth. Many would-be champions have arrived in town, and seem intent on eliminating as much of the competition as possible prior to the actual event.
FAIR WARNING: This module is very story driven, and low on the level of role-play. I dont want to mislead folks my purpose was to tell the story though truth be told, even that has changed considerably from Jons original. The module assumes that you have a newly created character - with only the clothes on your back. Everything you need can be found in the module. I have decided not to strip and level characters (I hate when mods do that to me). You can play with any level race, class, weaponry etc. However, the story was written from the perspective of a male fighter - I have been playing a barbarian thats the closest to what Jon wrote - and makes the most sense when playing from that perspective.
Installation is pretty straight forward but full details are in the install/play pdf file just open it and follow the instructions.
I would like to take this opportunity to the many folks who have offered support and encouragement. This is my first attempt at anything like this and I couldnt have arrived at this point without your help both direct and indirect (things gleaned on the community forums). When I firth started visiting the discussions I wondered why the group was referred to as the community. Now I understand.

I enjoyed this module, the story was interesting and unique. The setting at the edge of the Forgotten realms wasteland was cool. The scripting was disjointed at times but the tale followed along well enough none the less. Except for the two largest enemies the combat was very easy, and there are some tremendous magical items to be had in the game. Good job, you did yourself and your son proud. R.I.P. Jon--and thanks.

Gave this a try. Combat unbalanced for the levels this is reportedly for. Gear is out of sync with the levels of this. Merchants are relatively useless as even after saving the caravan no one sells anything. Area design is fair but needs lots of polish. Storyline is a good idea but I wasn't enamoured with it. Dialogue was fair, not alot of options and everyone apparently wants to fight. Not sure if this was a first try if so its got promise just needs more flushing out.
I'm using 1.12.1295 (I'm on a Mac so maybe that had something to do with it, but it never has before). In any case, it wasn't a real problem - I finished the mod and am looking forward to the next installment.
Congratulations on the mod - I know your son would be very proud.
I'm enjoying the game, but have encountered a problem. After fighting the giant outside the cave the entire party leveled up. I had no problem until I tried to level up Paej. Every time I try I get dumped to desktop. This isn't a game stopper, but he'll remain level 7 if I can't do anything. Is there any way around this?
I managed to fix it. I didn't have something installed right. Great module so far. A lot of typos in the text, but that's a small matter. I am having trouble figuring out where to go for quests, though, as the journal never updates.
Not sure what is causing the "crash" - this has not been previously reported. Hope you get to play it through. Thanks for the comments re the intro movie - will keep that in mind as I move forward with the sequel ("Winter Promises"). _________________________ dgraf
The mod tends to crash when I try to leave the tavern, so I haven't gotten to play through it yet. But I have a few suggestions for the intro movie. Maybe taking the screenshiots out would be a good thing to so and leave the text and other images in.
The speaktrigger issue is a 1.21 issue. If you haven't tried yet, try "update" on the main game menue. The mod will also work with pre-1.21 versions. Sorry - but I don't know of any console commands to get around this. _________________________ dgraf

Juan - (1) are you playing the latest Patch (1.22)? When I checked, the speak triggers which had been broken under SOZ were working under the new patch. and (2) are all the triggers broken, or just the one at Fenstar's house? I do not know if you can get them to work from the consol. _________________________ dgraf
I´m playing Price of honor, and when I enter in a trigger which opens a conversation, the game continues without opening the dialogue, and I lose the story. I know there are triggers in some areas because I can see them using the DebugMode (areas in yellow) and the neverwinter toolset.
My question is: in case that conversation triggers doesn´t work, does exist a command that make them run while playing?
For example, from the toolset I know that a trigger is called fenstarfigh_convo, but I can´t make it run. I try to write "rs fenstarfigh_convo" in DebugMode console but it doesn´t work.
Please help me. Thanks in advance.

A nicely done mod, thanks. Played a lot like a short story (not a bad thing), with some interesting quests. I liked the end bit, where I had to keep fighting the members of my own party. Short and sweet.
Cheers

Decent module, some nicely constructed areas.

Dedication is indeed the right word to describe The Price of Honor. Somewhat bland areas and mainly easy combat didn't bother as the module's main purpose is to provide a small story about honor. It's really refreshing after many epic-feeling-when-saving-the-world stories.
The module has some interesting changes compared to the original short-story. I liked the very different ending as it works more better in the dramatical sense. Although the battle before the ending doesn't quite have that same intense feeling as in the short story. Perhaps it would work better if the battle wouldn't be in the middle of the city but instead on some grassy and rocky wasteland hills bathing on the sunset - that's how I pictured the fight in the short story.
In order to be made more game-like the module contains lots of extra stuff, as the short story begins nearby the module's climax. Many of the added content work, I escpecially liked the new antagonist, a former mercenary friend. There are also couple of items that doesn't quite match, for example that blade golem - the only battle which requires respawn - is suppoused to be an alternate test but the test for what?
All in all The Price of Honor succeeds quite well in its purpose to be something entertaining for players and something to help author in his healing proscess. The module shows delication and good writing skills the author has who surely will have a grand modding career ahead of him.
One bug I noticed.
MINOR SPOILERS START FROM HERE
When freeing the celestial bear I was supposed to obtain some amulet but I didn't receive it. Therefore I couldn't return it to that tribe chief and was unable to complete the quest. _________________________ A good module author is PAG: Patient, Ambitious and Gutsy.
Lariam - I haven't updated to SoZ yet (waiting to see what Santa brings), so I do not know - I suspect that it might from what I have been reading. I'm hoping that a patch will be available by the time the Jolly old elf pops in! Once the patch arrives , all should be well. If not I will attempt one of the work arounds that have been posted. Thanks for giving it a look. _________________________ dgraf
Do you think that the SoZ problems (some OnEnter scripts broken, I take it - whatever that means) affect this mod currently? Hoping to play this once I finish SoZ (which could still take a while, though).
Looking forward to playing this at some point - a lot on my plate right now, though! Anyway, congrats on the release. The screenies look very nice. _________________________ Forgotten Realms Weave
I too would like to congratulate you. I'm sure Jon would have been proud of this day in more ways than one. :) I hope I get the chance to play this one in the future too.

Congratulations, Dgraf! What an achievement, and what a suitable honour to Jon! This module I am really looking forward to download and play. :) _________________________ From someone who is starting to feel like an Ent among saplings when playing computer-based D&D games...
Congratulations on the release :D All the hard work and dedication to Jon's story shows. I hope the Community enjoys this as much as I did! _________________________ "You take a look around and you see that the law is there only to protect power.
