Treasure Island - A Prefab area for NWN2 by David Crowell aka Eat2surf
This is an area for my upcoming module of the same name.
To create an expansive area without taxing the computer I decided to experiment with scale. I have reduced the entering characters to .3 scale .. the current, crude-but-functional script changes the scale and slows down the character to keep the movement speed relative to the PC's size.
Thanks to this scaling, I have been able to deliver you a complete island to explore. An area that takes a long time to walk from one end to the other. An area big enough to get lost in.
This scaling does have a couple of effects that may initially be unsettling.
The camera settings are designed for normal sized (1,1,1) characters.. thus, when zooming in the camera goes over your scaled-down avatar. When using the NWN1-style strategy mode it is best to keep the zoom a bit back from your character. It also works fairly well to use the Chase Camera and lower the view to watch your PC run.
There is a script to slow you down in the swamp. It has a SpellID of 1001.. and the scaled-speed has an ID# of 1000.. I have no idea if these conflict with anything.. not my forte.. and in interest of completing this for the NWN2 Area Contest I haven't researched this. If any issues arrise from this I will update!
The Area is based on the descriptions in Robert Louis Stevenson's book, "Treasure Island." He was inspired by the area around Monterey California and thus mentions an island with a good deal of pine trees. However, he also sets Treasure Island at a location that is fiting of palm trees and tropical plants.
While such areas exist, I found that many I talked with thought the two tree-types didn't coexist. I assure those critical of this mix to research what troubles them.
In addition to recreating Treasure Island as described in the book, I also wanted to use only what was given to me in the NWN2 toolset. I built this with NWN2 1.11 .. This left me a bit lacking in shrubbery. (Oh how the kights who say, "Nih!" would be disappointed!) .. I rotated and scaled the two tropical shrubs I found in the toolset (Shrub-small.. Shrub-medium) to create my clumps of greenery.
There may be other shrubs that would work. I had already used the Holly bushes in the swamp and thought the same plant up in the hills would be inappropriate. There may also be other placeables that I missed. I only got NWN2 in February 2008.
Included are The Stockade, The Hispanolia, the swamps, all the topography mentioned on the map that Jim Hawkins took from Billy Bone's sea chest, Ben Gun's cave... Rum Cove.. the North Inlet.. and even some bird cement on the sea rocks.
Anyway, Here for your exploration is Treasure Island.
issacjr .. Thanks! I really need to get the dust off of this and finish my Treasure Island module! _________________________ Enjoy!

---you should decide all big or all scaled, cause you can't change a 2da on the fly--
Well.. the actual use of the scaled down area is gonna probably be a travel map. and upon entry to things like the Stockade.. or Ben Gun's Cave.. etc.. you will enter a normal sized area.. I haven't really dove into it yet.
Thanks for exploring the island! _________________________ Enjoy!

really a wonderfull area, man.
and i liek the idea of scaling PCs.
But i can foresee a problem for your module: the space and combat gets screwed when you scale PCs if you don't change some values in 2da (and i couldn't make it work properly anyway).
So in your module i fear you should decide all big or all scaled, cause you can't change a 2da on the fly.
Anywya great area, again.
lKurital, Thanks for the wonderful compliment.. as I was building it, I'd wander around and just enjoy the views.. I'm glad you liked it. _________________________ Enjoy!

This area is amazing I found myself randomly running around the island for hours And it solves a problem i was having with long distance travel in my module, The scaling was a great idea Hope to see your module out soon.
Terame.. thanks for the comments! Keep a weather eye out for my Treasure Island module.. _________________________ Enjoy!

Yeah.. the scaling will just be in this area of the module.. it's kinda important to the story to have the thing be one area.. _________________________ Enjoy!

Dave
I love the area, the exploration, and the visual! I still have awkwardness with the character scaling. I will take some getting used to.
I'm looking forward to your module release!!
Good luck :)
